SALTSBURG JOINT HIGH SCHOOL SALTSBURG, PA Presents LA SALUANN 1955 Foreword Contents FOREWORD CONTENTS THE Senior Class of 1955 has completed twelve years of schooling and the further advancement of education. During the twelve years we have attended many different schools, but we descended upon Saltsburg Joint High to complete our last four years together. After this year has been completed, and each one has received a diploma to be cherished forever, we will once more go our separate ways. Some will continue on to further education at schools of higher learning while the others will learn from experience in their lives. Whatever the method may be, we will never stop learning. We have endeavored to depict in this book some of the activities, personalities, and classes of this year that will remain part of our pleasant memories. For the theme of our yearbook we are using some of the books that we have encountered during our school years. We have worked hard to produce a record of achievement and leadership that we can be proud of forever. We have helped to improve the school activities throughout our last year, and this book is one of the many improvements made. May the La Saltianna help to put a strong impression in your minds of our high school days together. Administration Seniors Underclassmen . Activities Sports. Dedication WE, the class of nineteen hundred and fifty-five, in order to show our respect and appreciation for the service, guidance, patience, and loyalty that has been extended to us throughout our school years, to this teacher, a helpful friend, we dedicate this twenty-sixth volume of the La Saltianna. Although he has only been here three years, he has worked diligently with our class to solve our many problems. He has shown us the importance of co-operation in school as well as every day life. It is only through his unselfish willingness to devote his time for our needs that this graduating class has been so successful and left such a fine record. We want to show our gratitude for his assistance by humbly dedicating this year's annual to Mr. Kenneth Gambone. There are few among you, who in your haste to prove your worth to the world and because of your rebellion against parental and adult authority, have not proclaimed the above statement . It is the same thing that caused many a youth to think of his parents as being dumb; later to awaken to the reality of how much they learned in a short time. Your teachers often find the job of working with people in this frame of mind discouraging. But only as they have learned to understand you better than you do yourselves, do they get the courage to go on, realizing that some day they will have helped you to save yourselves from becoming prisoners of life itself. Sincerely, Paul R. Runyan Dear Seniors: During the past twelve years we have endeavored to shape your lives so that you may be better fit to overcome the obstacles which you will meet in the years to come. In many instances our suggestions went unheeded because you felt our judgment did not coincide with your thinking. It is with the best interest of the student in mind, when all judgments and decisions are rendered. May you develop a cooperative attitude in all phases of life, which is essential if you are to be an asset to your community. Sincerely, 6 Principal John R. Coulson John R. This year we have worked extra hard to bring the best re mem brance of your life, the yearbook. The extra eight pages this year has been an addition to the book. The supplement will contain activities of the last two months in the school year. The padded cover, which most of you have, is an extra also. The staff started early in the year to make money for the printing of this book, but like always was slow until the actual sale of the yearbook itself. Miss Adomato, along with her able staff, j put much time in the organization of the book. Bill Corbett, the editor, had the co-opera- tion of our able manager, Elmer Little, Marie Shumack, Joan Heifer, and the help of most of the staff. We hope that the La Saltianna will be satisfactory to all. As in previous years, the senior class is responsible for its production and this is the first year in which the paper has been produced every two weeks. This practice requires a competent staff, one which must be constantly seeking news and working to produce the paper. It has been the hope of this year's staff to improve the publication as well as to make it a more competent piece of Journalism . Consequently, the staff encourages the underclassmen to take an interest in supporting a paper which seeks Improvement constantly. Among these were five seniors that were to be a greatly appreciated asset to the team. Rodney Lewis was injured during practice and was sidelined for the season. The team journeyed to Apollo for the first game of the season and returned home with a hard-fought victory that came about in the final seconds of play. Their next triumphs were over Washington and Green Townships. The Washington game was the best performance of the season and hopes were running high for an undefeated season until they were dashed by an overwhelming defeat by the Bell-Avon eleven. Laurel Valley took advantage of the stunned Trojans and things were suddenly gloomy. Saltsburgdealt out revenge on Shannock Valley and Pine Township by fielding a determined and confident team. Derry Boro returned to the Trojans the last minute win that they took from Apollo by intercepting a pass just before the gun sounded. Saltsburg was more determined than ever to defeat the Edlers Ridge Rams and succeeded in bringing home a shutout over their old arch-rivals. As a whole the team turned in a very commendable season that anyone could be proud of. 51 I M ftP Front Row; N. DcLuca, D. Peffer. R. Whitescl. Back Row: H.Whitescl, R. Forward THIS year's varsity was expected to consist of the same starting five as last year; but Don Whitehouse was ruled ineligible and Rodney Lewis suffered a knee injury. New Head Coach, James Primozic, had three eligible lettermen with which to build his team. They were Don Peffer, Bob Hund, and Eugene Whitesei. Bob Whitesel and George Stone earned the other starting posts. The team has height, speed, and some bench strength. Above all, this Varsity squad has the will to win, a fighting spirit, and aggressiveness. With these they should hold their own in th ir class. Good Luck Boys! Bob ilund. .Center James Primozic.. THE Junior Varsity lacked experience at the beginning of the basketball season. However, under the supervision of their new coach, Robert Flick, they have been improving rapidly. The squad is composed of mostly Freshmen, with a few Sophomores . These boys are gaining valuable experience for the future years at Saltsburg. These boys on the Junior Varsity are the future lettermen of Saltsburg Joint High School. 56 Mary Lou Peienon lyn Clawson Scash'em! All Set? You bet! THIS is a familiar sound coming from the five Saltsburg cheerleaders. These five school spirited fans could be found at all the school's sports events. Rain or snow never discouraged them. The cheerleaders did many services for the school. Besides leading the cheers they held after game dances in order to earn money for new uniforms; decorated the cheering section and goal posts; displayed signs of encouragement in the hall; and most important of all--set up and maintained a high degree of sportsmanship, regardless of the outcome of a contest. THIS year, as last year, the girls have two teams- J.V. and Varsity. The J.V. team consists of girls from the ninth and tenth grades; the Varsity consists of girls from ninth through twelfth gTade. We went to Pittsburgh before the season began to participate in an exhibition against Ormsby. The game was part of the annual Basketball Clinic Program held in Ormsby Recreation Center. At this clinic all the new rules are explained and demonstrated. We are hoping for a successful season with our schedule of nineteen games. We are sure the season will be successful if the team spirit remains the same throughout the year.
