LA SALTIANNA 1954 SALTSBURG JOINT HIGH SCHOOL SALTSBURG PENNSYLVANIA INSTITUTION OF LEARNING FOREWORD The class of 1954 has the privilege of making another edition of the La Saltianna a success. The class has strived to keep up the high standards that have been set before them. Although there have been many difficulties encountered during the publication of the yearbook, the staff, with the cooperation of the student body, supplied the initiative and leadership which was necessary to carry the publication to completion. Hie class has endeavored to make the 1953-54 school year a success in every way possible. Grateful appreciation is extended to our teachers for the guidance they have given us and for the patience they have displayed in helping the class to be self reliant and understanding toward others. In spiteof the fact that Saltsburg Joint High School is a small school, the class feels that its memories and teachings will always be big. J. The yearbook staff under the supervision of Miss Adornato has done a commendable job this year. Miss Adornato has devoted much of her time and talent to producing this year’s book, and she received the cooperation of the class through the leadership of Arlene Auen, year-DDEAS book editor. The advice and labor which has gone into this year’s copy of the La Saltianna would be too much to measure in one short paragraph; therefore, the staff extends it sincere thanks to Miss Adornato and Arlene Auen for guiding and directing the production of the class record. y K Top — Rose types the bulletin. DEDICATION We, the Class of Nineteen Hundred and Fifty-four, dedicate this Twenty-fifth Volume of the La Saltianna to our school secretary for her services, guidance, and friendship which she has given us during our school years. RUNYAN B.S. in Education, Shippensburg Teachers College M.Ed. Pennsylvania State University Seniors, when you go out from here, will you continue to work with your fellow men in peace and harmony? 1 hope that you might have learned to find pleasure in simple things. 1 wish that you may have done something towards making the homes that you one day will build for your children a place where love and human understanding will help you and yours achieve common goals. 1 would like to think that you will find something in the things you learned here that will make you a better neighbor to the man across the street. It is my dream that you have become more tolerant of other people and that you may be far above the racial, religious, and political prejudices which are eating away our moral fabric. Finally, may 1 hope that we have done something to build in you Faith--faith in yourselves and your ideals, faith in your fellow men, and above all faith in God. As you have learned to conquer these simple little things in your every day lives, I am sure you are laying the ground work for a life of success that is filled with the joy of living. Paul R. Runyan HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL JOHN R. COULSON B. S. in Education, Waynesburg College M. Ed. Duquesne University We have attempted in a few short years to develop your needs, interests, and abilities so that you may be better prepared to succeed in your preferred occupation or profession. The years spent at Saltsburg High School have reached their culmination; it is now your responsibility to go forth and find your fitted place. It is our fondest desire that you have developed, through your time spent in school, the necessary knowledge to enable you to cope with the affairs of everyday life. With this attained education you should be able to make a constructive mark in your chosen field and work toward ever nobler ends. 10 John R. Coulson KATHLEEN ADORNATO B.S. Ambition ... To get rich. Mixed Chorus, Boys Chorus, Senior Chorus, Baseball, Football, F.F.A. Dear Students, I have often wondered about my classmates. As 1 sit here in my living room, which adjoins my dentist office, my wife and 1 remember the different fields the class had chosen for their future. 1 have heard from many of them in the past years. Arlene Auen and Jean Hall were working in Jeannette the last time 1 heard from them.GladysTreece and Veronica Kachonik are still famous beauticians at Pierre's” in New York. Buck Rupert was planning to go to California and work; he was tired of snow and rain. Duane Waddle and Sonny Pierce are making pictures for Metro-Goldwyn Mayer. I saw a picture with the two boys playing the leading roles. Very good acting on their part. Jack Cyphert and Joe Calhoun are working in Washington, D.C. as Secret Service men. They have as their secretary the famous Gloria Danesi. They seem to enjoy their work. Leroy Barnett has just become the new owner of K C Motors, which he has built up from a corner garage to a three-block garage. He has as his very pretty and efficient secretary, Mary Ann Shirley. Seems Archie Shrum has been doing well for himself too; he’s head mechanic at the same garage where Connie Stitt is the business executive. I hear from one of my fellow workers that Ronald Naponic has just opened a new dentist office with Vera Coffman as his receptionist and secretary. Jo-Ann Marsh and Janet Ritts are both on the cover of “Glamour” where they are working as models. Bill Whitesel has been doing the art work for the magazine. Seem he’s up for head artist. Doris Bechtel, Bonnie Stine, and June Gosnell are now on the faculty list at Saltsburg High School. Joanne Lynch and Delores Runyan are doing post-graduate work in order to obtain their Ph.D’s. It seems as though Dario Cavacini wasn’t meant for work. His rich uncle finally came through and left himanice little bank roll. He’s now down at the South Sea Islands, while Dino Frassenei is using his Cadillac Convertible to get back to camp. Dino is a Four Star General in this one man’s army. Ginger Grosklos, Jeanne Stone, Connie Valore, and Mary Bortz are living with the men of their lives. Delores Hopkins is going to become one of the happy gang soon. She’s planning her wedding for June. James Troup has just graduated from college and has just started a new factory in Cleveland. Bob Kundla and Bob Orvosh are training to become the two top foreman at the factory. Raymond Oliver writes to say that he is a Forest Ranger in the North Woods. He just came back with the search party who was called out to find the famous movie star, John Derek. Margaret Cindric was home on a 30-day leave from the Women’s Air Force. She stopped at the Pentagon Building on her way back and met some of her schoolmates working there. Seems Marcella Hewitt is giving orders to the women of the armed forces. Mike Moore and Andy Wensconis have just set a new record in flying a jet around the world. They are also in the Air Force. Up for promotion soon. After coming back from the service, Donald Reeger has just started farming his 35,000 acre farm near Saltsburg. Charles and Geraldine Gabrielson have just opened a new super market which covers three blocks. They started with a small country store. Rodney Baker and James Grosklos are working as part owners of Federal Laboratories. Dennie Weik, once a mailman, is in a new television play called, “The Mailman Had Some Trouble. Lois Ashbaugh is at the head of the color department for the Ford Auto Plant in Cleveland. Mary Ellen Murphy is sitting here remembering these things with me. You see she has been my wife since graduation. I’m sure the students from our class have become the greatest class ever to graduate from Saltsburg High School. The ambition to become someone famous has helped them to become successful. Keith Anderson • . y Or A ¥• f kej tj-ust, SiCttiXS' JUNIORS We entered Saltsburg Joint Hiirh q k . - - and Mr. Curtioff. Our class officers are Martha Calhoun, President; Robert Whitesel, Vice President; Faye Vitali, Secretary; Janet Stephens, Treasurer. Mr. Gould, Mr. Gambone, and Mr. Maguire are our helpful sponsors. The main activity of our school year was the Sweater Hop in which the whole school willingly participated. We chose a Japanese motif for this dance which honored the Seniors. We 'also, with the able help of Miss Jackson, produced a Pennsylvania Week program. In addition, several students represented us in sports. It is our wish that we shall enjoy and cherish future school days as much as we did our Freshman days. FIRST ROW: J. Hopkins, M. McBurney, V. Compton, E. Versino, N. Stout, M. Johnson, L. Mikesel, J. The night was passing rapidly for everyone. but morning would never come for two spectators, Homer Menser and August Belice. Probably no one spoke so happily of a winning team. Victory and happiness belonged to them. It is with this feeling that we remember them. We passed nothing to them, but they passed something to us: Devotion to their school, pure and simple; harmony of friendship to us; pride and humility in victory. This they gave to us, and we accept their legacy to keep in trust, confident that those who will pass through our halls in future years will add to the living memorial called Memory. FIRST ROW: J. SHAKER 36 This year’s Salt Shaker Staff, the class of 1954, is under the direction of Miss Adornato, a graduate of Indiana High School and Indiana State Teachers College. This is her first year at Saltsburg and already she has become a permanent fixture in our school. Under her guidance our staff has bettered its condition of previous years. One of our greatest achievements thus far has been the enlargement of our circulation department, as we now have many more school paper exchanges. During this school year our sales department has also reached successful heights. However, these are not the only departments which have shown improvement, as the whole paper has improved. All of these improvements are due mostly to the hard work of our staff. Hard work also has its reward because this year’s staff will receive pins which will act as an ever-lasting reminder of their cooperative work and the success of their school paper. FIRST ROW: J. The Club meets weekly on Thursday afternoon. Its purpose is to help stimulate and better prepare those with an interest in Science and Photography for use in the outside world. It is also organized to help bring to light a deeper interest found in those who have a will to work in the science fields. The club has been studying different methods of developing, tinting, and other phases of photography. Scientific movies were shown and discussed at some of the club meetings. The Club is planning field trips in the Spring to study Outdoor Photography and Science. Members are supplying their own cameras since equipment is lacking, but they are expecting to have a darkroom and developing equipment shortly. In the future the members will do almost all of the photography for the Yearbook, which should save a considerable amount of money. They will also do developing and tinting for students for only slightly over the cost of supplies, which will give the members the advantage of more experience. There are twenty-two members in the Club and the Advisor is Mr. Gould. Officers for the year 1953-54 are as follows: President, Don Whitehouse; Vice President, Rodney Lewis; Secretary, Joan Heifer; Treasurer, Sally Lytle. SENIOR PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB FIRST ROW: L. Tuzi, D. VARSITY CLUB The purpose of the Varsity Club is to form a select group of students who have earned a varsity letter in school sports. The club is formed jointly by girls and boys. Various activities were carried on during the year; a dance was held with some success, football games, and schedule pencils were sold during the basketball season. All profits earned from these projects will gc toward the payment of trophies, plaques, letters, anc sweaters. The sweaters are awarded to seniors who have earned a letter previous to their senior year. The purpose of the Girls’ Athletic Association is to provide sports for those girls who wish to participate. The size of the club is quite large considering the size of our school. All of the members are active in one capacity or another. A girl must participate in at least one sport to belong to the organization. Sports events of various kinds are held at noon on Wednesday and Thursday of each week. All the work concerning these sports is done by members. A sport head or someone to organize a certain sport is elected by the entire group. Besides sponsoring sports the G.A.A. also holds dancing on Friday at noon. The G.A.A. sometimes invites boys into this dancing. Many times new steps are taught to them, but more often it is just for fun. The G.A.A. is planning a Play Day again this year. It was a great success last year. The club sold Trojan football pins during football season. It proved to be a profitable endeavor. The G.A.A. could not have succeeded without the help of is sponsor. An initiation and weiner roast was held at the home of the Hewitts. Our money-making project was selling mints. At Christmas time we sold gift notes, which the girls made from Christmas cards. Once again our Christmas party was held in the Home Economics room. In February we collected money for the children at the Willard Home, which was used to buy valentines, candy, and games. As is our tradition, we awarded to each senior in good standing an F.H.A. pin. Then in May we had our annual spaghetti dinner in honor of our seniors. The officers for the coming year were installed at a candlelight service, followed by a Mother’s Day tea. This year in F.H.A. was worth while and our goal will always be toward the establishment of better homemakers for the future of America. Mrs. Ganley trains future members. FIRST ROW: C. During the week F.F.A. members attend classes two days and agriculture shop three days. In class we study about the animals of an every-day farmer. Besides the feeding and care of livestock, we study their diseases and cures. After that, comes the study of the insects which hinder crops, like the corn borer. In shop we repair, paint, and make machinery. A lot of the work is done with electric welder, rip saw, and forge and drill press. Wagons, trailers, feed carts, hog feeders and many other handy machinery and tools are made. During the year many field trips are made which are educational. Annually there is a judging and tractor driving contest at the county home. In the judging contest there are several different contests such as general livestock, farm mechanic, dairy, agronomy and public speaking. In tractor driving a person has to be skilled in backing trailers and putting a belt on a pulley so that it runs evenly and does not fall off. The winners from this contest go to Penn State for a slightly tougher contest in July. At Penn State, after the judging, there are tours and demonstration for three days. The boys eat like kings and have the time of their lives. They have almost all the luxuries of home, and all of the expenses are paid. During one of the mass meetings Milton Eisenhower spoke to the F.F.A. boys. In January a group goes to the state farm show. The farm show buildings are under fourteen acres of roof and all are heated. As one enters he faces the big arena which seats four thousand. Each of the thirty-six sections are seated to form a keystone to represent Pennsylvania. Another feature is the livestock buildings. Each building has about five hundred animals. The champion of each breed is on display. During the four years of high school there are many interesting experiments, demonstrations, and field trips which make being a member of the F.F.A. a rewarding experience. FIRST ROW: J. Hopkins, E. The chief purpose of all these projects was to make a profit for the yearbook. The Club helped in every way possible in order to publish a yearbook. The first project that was undertaken was the sale of the personalized stationery. Students sold boxes of stationery to faculty members, students, and townspeople. The Bake Sale proved to be a profitable activity. Every senior donated delicious baked goods to the worthy cause. The beautiful cakes, pies, cookies, and cupcakes were enjoyed by the people of Saltsburg and the surrounding area. Since there were several boxes of Christmas cards left from last year, the Club attempted to sell all of the remaining boxes. This attempt was very successful and profitable. A Square Dance was sponsored on a Wednesday night. This project did not prove to be a very profitable one since there were not many of our students at the activity. Therefore, the Club sponsored another dance on a Friday night. Our most entertaining project was the Skating Party. Every student who attended the party had a wonderful time and several of them had bruises to prove it. The trip on the bus was very entertaining and enjoyable. All in all, the Commercial Club had a busy year with many interesting activities. FIRST ROW: L. Ashbaugh, C. Valore, V. Coffman, M. Shumack; SECOND ROW: G. Grosklos, D. Waddle, G. It is made up of several pupils from the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades. Its purpose is to help musically inclined pupils to develop better musicianship. It is made up mainly of students who would rather sing in a small group in order to learn part singing better. The objectives of the club include better reading, good part singing and also learning to sing more difficult music. Two of the members of the group, Mary Ann Shirley and Doris Bechtel, were selected to attend the Western District Chorus at Ford City. Several others will be selected to go to County Chorus which will be held at Indiana, Pennsylvania. The entire group will participate in special programs such as the Christmas Program and other activities throughout the school year. The club intends to help with any outside activities to which it is invited. The Mixed Chorus is one of those small assets which makes a big difference in the school’s music program. The theme selected was Stardust Serenade. The auditorium was beautifully decorated in colors of blue and silver, and the music was supplied by the Rhythm Four. The dance was sponsored by the Junior Class in honor of the Graduating Seniors. The couples were introduced to the audience by the President of the Sophomore Class, Allan Baker and Master of Ceremonies, Don Whitehouse. Refreshments, served by members of the sophomore class, consisted of punch, cookies, and sandwiches. The tables were decorated with pastel colored tablecloths with floating gardenias for centerpieces. Those in the “grand march” made their entrance through an arch of crepe paper, with the officers of the Junior and Senior classes leading the procession. Following the grand march , the audience slowly dispersed and the dance got into full swing. At 12:00 the prom was over, but for most of the couples the night was just beginning. Some of the chosen spots to be visited were Savors, The Lighthouse, Vogue Terrace, Colonial Manor, and Beatty’s. The Class of 1954 is already beginning to look forward to next year’s prom, when they shall be the guest at this event. Mary Bortz, Mary Ann Shirley, Connie Stitt, Jeanne Stone, Rodney Baker, Dario Cavacini, Edgar Pierce, Duane Waddle On February 10, 1954 the annual Freshman “Sweater Hop' was held in the high school auditorium. A large crowd was present for the crowning of the Queen, Gladys Treece, and King, Dino Frassenei, both of whom were chosen by the popular vote of the student body. The King and Queen were attended by Connie Stitt, Jeanne Stone, Mary Bortz, Mary Ann Shirley, Rodney Baker, Edgar Pierce, Duane Waddle and Dario Cavacini. The crown bearers were Terry Summerson and Robert MacBlane, both of the first grade. Io the tune of JapaneseSandman’the King, Queen, crown bearers, their attendants and Freshman escorts arranged themselves on stage on both sides of the King and Queen who occupied a place beneath a red Japanese “Door of Honor. The large lantern with dragons which hung above the “Door of Honor’ was left burning for the duration of the dance. Butterflies on the curtains and walls and programs in the design of fans completed the oriental theme. Refreshments were sold out before the end of the dance, but this did not make the majority leave early, for during the final number of the evening the dance floor was still crowded. The enthusiastic reception of this annual affair has given ample testimony that graduates and the student body look forward to the Sweater Hop. A competent squad of players led the Trojans through a tough ten game schedule this season. Practice was grueling with a limited squad, but the prevailing spirit was intense and determined. In addition to the games that were played, the team proved its ability to stand up under a variety of weather conditions which ranged from cool evenings to three inches of snow. Spectacular play, in the true sense of the word, was limited, but commendable performances were turned in by such retiring seniors as Dino Fressenei, Duane Waddle, Edgar Pierce, Joseph Calhoun, and Mike Moore. We can look forward to an eager squad next year because of the determination that has been shown by this years team. “Coach Flick” 64 SCHEDULE SALTSBURG OPPONENT Apollo 27 0 Homer City 25 0 Washington Twp. 6 27 Commodore 0 14 Bell-Avon 13 31 New Florence 6 13 Shannock Valley 6 Pine Twp. 19 13 Derry Boro 6 Elders Ridge 21 66 TROIANS IN REVIEW James Amorose, Fullback Wade Cunkelman, Tackle Charles Fink, Tackle Robert Fink, Halfback Dino Frassenei, Halfback Rodney Lewis, Fullback Edgar Pierce, End Clarence Shelkey, Guard George Stone, Center Duane Waddle, End Don Whitehouse, Quarterback Douglas Whitehouse, Guard KNEELING: R. PROSPECTIVE LETTERMEN At the time of going to press, the Junior Varsity basketball team has won only two games this season. The team has been handicapped this year because of losing most of its players to the varsity. Although so few games have been won, the team has continued a spirited type of play which has paid dividends in a number of ball games. The best performance of the season was played against the junior varsity of the league leaders, Washington Township. Saltsburg lost in an overtime period by two points, but they displayed an aggressiveness which will continue to linger throughout the season. The boys who carried the colors for the Trojans this year were: George Stone, Nick DeLuca, Robert Lincoln, Robert Whitesel, Louis Ziegmond, Allan Baker, William Corbett, Dominic Lombardi, Paul Johnson, Jay Bakes, William Weimer, and Jerry McKee. Ten straight victories were chalked up before facing Hampton Township for the first time. Then with lowered spirits, Hell-Avon succeeded in giving the team a trouncing, followed by another thrashing at Hampton. l ime alone will tell what happened at the tournaments where last year, in competition with twenty-seven teams, we entered the semi-finals. Captains June Cosnell, forward, and Virginia Grosklos, guard, worked hard to hold the team together. They had excellent support from Gladys Trcece, senior guard, Marlene Lindenberg, junior guard, Catherine Porter and Nancy McAuley, junior forwards, and Arlene Coleman, sophomore forward. All three seniors will be greatly missed in our 1954-55 encounters. Regardless of the victories and defeats, which are the secondary results of a game, the gi ls had the opportunity of meeting new people and visiting new places. And although they did not have a perfect record, they did attain other goals. They helped to create better interscholastic relations, and they received an opportunity of benefiting from the experiences that can be had from participation in competitive athletics. This team with its skill, enthusiasm, good sportsmanship, sense of humor and hard work is a team that I’ve had great pleasure in guiding. “Coach Turner SITTING: C. Porter, F. Brink, G. Treece, A. TRACK The 1953 track season opened with twenty candidates reporting for Spring practice. Conditioning was difficult and the complaints were many, but after eight meets the team was ready for the county meet at Elders Ridge. The thin-clads expended a maximum of effort and returned with fourteen medals, all of which were presented at a special assembly program. The boys who placed were: Rogers Frassenei, Jerry Clawson, Duane Waddle, Jaxon Cyphert, Donald Whitehouse, and Robert Fink. The mile relay team and Robert Fink turned in notable performances which warranted their attendance at the District meet which was held in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Robert Fink ran the 100 yard dash and the 220 yard dash, and Duane Waddle ran in the 440 yard run in the District meet, while the mile relay club was composed of Rogers Frassenei, Duane Waddle, Jerry Clawson, and Donald Whitehouse. Although none of our boys were able to place in this highly competitive meet, the Trojans gave a commendable showing in the midst of high calibre competition. Track is slowly picking up in popularity and the boys who are returning for the 1954 season are eager to commence training. Good luck, boys, and don’t slow down. Waddle, first to the tape.
