TURNER University of Pittsburgh A.B.; Master in Letters Summer Sessions Pennsylvania State College Saint Francis Temple University Our Secretary To us departing Seniors, Miss Nezolyk has proved to be efficient and understanding. Miss Nezolyk has been a familiar figure during our four years of high school. She took her position as secretary during the fall of 1947, the same year we entered as Freshmen. She shall be greatly missed by the Class of '51. It has been a privilege to serve you as Supervising Principal of the Saltsburg Joint High School. The new organization of having the three school boards of Conemaugh, Saltsburg, and Loyalhanna combined to solve the problems of your school will in years to come provide a much better education for all those attending Saltsburg Joint High School. It is hoped by all that as the years pass, this relationship will grow stronger through understanding. In the march of time many changes have been made, but we cannot improve upon the ideals originally planned by our forefathers. They include qualities of industry, ambition, self respect, independence, use of leisure time, and many others. You alone can secure the training necessary to enable you to lead our destinies rather than to be led. I hope you will always cooperate in whatever worthwhile undertaking you attempt. MISS NEZOLYK La SALTIANNA 19 5 1 8 High School Principal TO THE GRADUATING SENIORS: You have now reached the first step on the ladder of success; may the passing years take you many steps higher. La SALTIANNA — 19 5 1 18 Class History We Build the Ladder on Which We Climb” As we the Senior Class depart, we look back over our years of high school, and suddenly our class motto comes into our minds: We Build the Ladder on Which We Climb.” Looking back through the years we find we have gone a long way on that ladder, since that fall of 1947 when we bore the title, Freshmen. The year went rapidly, but we shall always remember it as a year filled with success. We have added one more rung to our ladder for now we are Sophomores. We were no longer green freshmen, we were now sophisticated, ambitious, and industrious Sophomores. We can remember this year quite vividly, because we were entering our sports and activities with whole-hearted enthusiasm. That year soon came to a close, and together we climbed still higher on our ladder to become Juniors. Can anyone ever forget their Junior year in high school? This was a year above all others. It was brimmed with one continuous round of activities and studies. We shall never forget the play, the dances, football and basketball games and all the miny other things that made that year pass even more quickly than any of the rest, we were truly in the heart of high school. e Now we are Seniors, and as we remember our high school days, we shall think of them only, as being successful and happy years. As this our final year in high school draws to a close, we shall leave our books and our activities, but we shall never leave our motto behind. We will continue to climb our ladder to future success and future happiness. 19 La SALT1ANNA 195 1 Class Will We, the class of 1951, being of sound mind, and healthy physique, do make and publish this our last Will and Testament. La SALTIANNA 1 95 20 Class Prophecy I had been requested to attend a teachers convention in New York City. I was packing my suitcase when I heard a knock at the door. I opened the door to find a uniformed policeman, Joe Vatter, standing before me. We were talking of old times when he said he had been asked to escort me to the airport. On our way he told me of the success of Ted Guzz and Ronny Clawson in the sports world. He said Ronny had been noted as the Most Valuable Player in the National League Baseball Association three years in succession. Ted Guzz, who entered another field of sports, was the outstanding player of the Pittsburgh Steelers football team. It was a long drive to the airport and as we went along I noticed a large farm. I asked Joe if he knew who owned it. Joe replied that it was owned by Merle Clawson, a '51 classmate who had already made over one million dollars on beef cattle. At long last we reached the airport and I saw the B-35, in which I was to go to New York, warming up. At the controls was Mark Stepic and beside him was his hostess, Mary T. It was a long flight to New York so enroute we were shown movies. Midway through the movies I noticed the leading part was played by Harold C. Harold was making out very well in the movies. After this movie they showed a short movie about Alaskan hunting. To my surprise I recognized the owner of a lodge as Albert Matson. After the movies the lights were turned on and as I glanced around the plane I noticed Donald Roland. I went over and had a pleasant chat with him. He told me he had been invited to the convention also. Mary, Don, and I talked of old times at S.H.S. and of our old school chums. Mary said she knew that June Reedy and Elnora Pratt were beauty-shop operators and Lois Treece, Marilyn Hazlett, and Patty Gros-klos were happily married. Don gave his report in which he said that Dotty M. had a job demonstrating Royal Typewriters and Martha Bash and Ruth Vought were secretaries with the United Nations. I told them of Sara Hitchings being appointed to the Senate. We were just finishing our talk when Mark told us to fasten our safety-belts for the landing. As we landed at Weimer Airfield, the President of Weimer Airlines, John Weimer, came to the plane to greet us. John said he had called Albert Fenili, President of the Fenili Rent-a-Car Company, and asked him to send out an auto to take Don and me to the Convention. We drove past the Johns Department Store, owned by Norma Johns. We pulled up in front of the convention headquarters where we were greeted by Professors James Soler, Nick Shayka, and Wiliam Shirley. Before the meeting we were led in prayer by Reverend Earl Harshbarger. After the meeting a banquet was held at the Green Cap, the nightclub owned by Bernice Morton and Martha Horner. Special Service Agent Lucille Stein, of the F.B.I. was assigned to guard our hats and coats. I checked to see if all my old schoolmates were listed and found that Rose Forney, who owns a large hotel in Florida, was absent. Now that I have all the class of 51 accounted for I may go back to my career of teaching. Until I am again called to report on the progress of the Class of 51, I will say goodbye. With three veterans — John Weimer, Ted Sutyak, and Steve Bair — returning from last year's squad, the Trojans showed promise of a respectable season; however, Ted Sutyak broke his arm in the second game and John Weimer was plagued with injuries most of the year. The rest of the squad was made up of Sophomores and Juniors. The T formation replaced the single-wing.” The boys were quick to pick up the new system. Team work and a solid knowledge of the basic fundamentals enabled the team, that wasn't supposed to win, to come through with four well earned victories. The highlight of the season was the victory over East Deer, 19 to 6. The team went into the game as twenty point underdogs. The whole squad deserves credit for this win. Valuable assistance was given to the squad and Mr. Flick by our capable assistant coach, Norbert Borowicz. Mr. Flick and Mr. Borowicz view the future football situation at Saltsburg: We will miss the team play and competitive spirit of the four departing seniors; however, with the return of this year's co-captains, Steve Bair, and Rogers Frassenei — and several other promising candidates, next year's team should prove more successful. The overall cooperation of the team, the faculty, and the student body has made this year's work pleasantly memorable.” 51 La SALT1ANNA 19 5 1 Top John Weimer, guard; Ted Gozelanczyk, right end Bottom — Joe Vatter, left tackle: Ronnie Clawson, quarterback Coach’s Comments on Graduating Players TED GOZELANCZYK — He held down the right end position; even played tackle part of the season. Ted was always good for a fancy catch. Ted's ambition is to go to Notre Dame. He has the ability to achieve that goal. RONNIE CLAWSON Most versatile player on the scjuad. He played every position except center. When calling the plays, he would always come up with the unexpected and throw the other team off balance. Ronnie also kicked off, and booted the extra points. JOE VATTER — Varsity left tackle. Big and rugged, Joe was a stone wall on defense. Always a head's up ball player. Joe missed the last two games because of a leg injury. JOHN WEIMER — One of the best guards in Indiana County. Time and time again that familiar No. 39 was the fifth man in the opposing team's backfield. John could make any small college team. Duh! O. K. Mr. Coulson The Saltsburg Trojans basketball squad reported for its first practice on November 13, 1930, under the coaching of Jack Coulson. With Ted Guzz. Ronnie Clawson, Steve Bair, and Ted Sutyak from last year's team, the Trojans got off to a fast start by winning four out of six games before the section started. A thrilling game played at Bell Twp. on the evening of January 3 showed the true spirit of Saltsburg High. Our team lost by only two points. When Saltsburg entered the Indiana County tournaments, they had high hopes of capturing the Class B crown. Arcadia was an easy w'in. Last year's champion, Rossiter, was upset by a wide margin; however, in the last game the Trojans lost by three points to the Clymer Eagles and thus ended the 1930-31 season. Next year's team should prove to be a power-house since most of the boys have had two years' experience. There were only two seniors on this year's team. The Junior Varsity team, coached by Mr. Borowicz, succeeded in winning nine-games out of fifteen. La SALTI ANNA 19 3 1 38 Coach’s Comments on Players T. GOZELANCZYK good rebound man, played pivot on offense, leading scorer of team. R. CLAWSON — clever ball handler, set up most of the baskets with his passing. S. La SALTI ANN A 1 9 ) 1 64 Coach's Comments DOROTHY McCREARY Season's high scorer; only senior on the squad; shot 51% from the foul line; excellent at evading her guard; moved like liquid around the floor; a good loser as well as a good winner. These are only a few of the reasons that Dorothy's absence on the '52 team will leave an enormous gap that will be difficult to fill. In all around ball playing, Dorothy was tops. PATTY McDIVITT — Junior forward and captain of the team; hit in 34% of her free throws; a nice overhead shot; should be a worthwhile member of the '52 Trojanettes. MARII.YNN ROLAND — Junior guard and number one man on defense. Her evasiveness, her ability to get off her feet, her understanding of zone defense, her basketball sincerity — these are the qualities that give Marilynn a bright future for 52. JEAN BUSI — Junior forward — small but enthusiastic; 42% from the foul line; knows how to move. Her experience this year should be valuable for next year. ROSE GABRIELSON — Junior — did an A-l job as our under-the-basket” guard. JO ANN ALIEN — Junior — gained valuable experience this year. A hard working forward. LILLIAN SINGLETON Junior — small but a mighty guard. Had an uncanny way of coming out of the mob with the ball. TRESSA TATARKA Junior — Switched from forward to guard. INDIVIDUAL SCORING F.G. F. T.P.
