Our Secretary Miss Nt-zolyk has been our school secretary for the past two years. She is a friend to all, as well as a capable secretary. Her great assets are dignity and efficiency. My personal opinion of a high school graduate is one who, first, has developed emotional stability and maturity and has formulated a proper set of values; second, has learned to get along well with other people and adjust to the group in which he finds himself; third, has developed the basic-skills necessary to competent living and has a sense of the dignity of work; and last, understands and appreciates the American way of life and has also a proper perspective of wrorld citizenship and a sense of indi vidual responsibility toward others. We weren't seeking any precious metals but instead, something priceless — a higher education. With sixty-seven of us to start, we felt confident that we would find what we were hunting. Miss Kohlhepp, Miss Koch, and Mr. Swauger were chosen to help us on our first adventure. Patricia Robinson was our class leader. The main claims we had were the Initiation, given by the Seniors, and the Sweater Hop. We were still a little green” yet, when we were told our first trip was over. Now we were ready for a second adventure. A few had decided to discontinue the trip but there were still a great many eager ones. Mrs. Dunmire was chosen to lead us and Loretta Grabiak to assist her. The Halloween Dance, we discovered, was very successful. In December we obtained something very worthwhile — our class rings. At last we were getting close to our destination. We plodded along until finally we could rest for three months. Back we came to continue on our Prospecting Trip.” Miss Christy led us that year. For our class leader we elected Katherine Sutyak. The Halloween Dance, again worked out fine. Getting more experienced we were permitted to travel a little farther than in former years. This time we had the class play, Gabriel Blow Your Horn and found it was worth all the hard work. Soon spring came and with it the Junior-Senior Prom. Our usual working clothes and tools were left behind for the night and instead, the girls wore frilly gowns and the boys their best suits. After that, time went quickly and, we found our vacation had come. This year we started our final trip together. There are only forty-seven of us now. Miss Kohlhepp advised us for the busiest adventure of all. Rodney Clawson was chosen to lead us on to the finish. Another Halloween Dance and a few other dances were held. In the spring we had another eventful happening—our class play. With the Baccalaureate and Commencement services we realized that our route for four years was over. We weren't happy now. All our companions would be gone. But we had proved successful. The knowledge we were seeking, we had found through our teachers and text books. Now we are leaving with the hope that the next graduating class will also succeed as we have succeeded 21 — Thk '49ER Class Personalities MOST PLEASING PERSONALITY Allan Cyphert Roberta Shirlev MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED David Koontz Betty Stroker Eugene Ashbaugh MOST FRIENDLY Katherine Sutyak Robert Maloy MOST ATHLETIC Delia D'Angelo David Stuby BEST DRESSED Elsie Shupe Herman Newhouse MOST SHY Dora Casciere Richard Lynch TALLEST Janet Rose Herman Newhouse SHORTEST Gladys Stein Rodney Clawson MOST VITALITY Alma Auen The '49er — 22 Class Activities EUGENE ASHBAUGH — 'Gene” Rifle Club I, Baseball 2, Editor of Salt Shaker 4 ALMA AULN— Dink” Glee Club 1-2-3, Science Club 1, Tri-Hi-Y 2, Rifle Club 3, F. L Bufalim Junior Class History The members of the class of 1950 began their first year of High School in 1946. Bob Heifer was elected as our president. Our official initiation came in October on Rookie Day” which was immensely enjoyed by both students and faculty. Our advisors. Miss Jackson and Mr. Nelmes, aided us in making our main activity, the Sweater Hop, a success. In May we parted hopefully looking forward to our sophomore year. Once again we were united in the fall of 1947. Mr. Curtioff was our class advisor and Leonard Bolton was chosen to be our class president. That year we ordered our class rings. We had many grand times — among them the Thanksgiving Dance. Like all good things this successful year came to an end. After three months vacation we returned on August 31, 1948, to begin our junior year. Miss Beck and Miss McCarl were our advisors and our president was Paul Single-ton. Once again we sponsored the Thanksgiving Dance but our main event was the play. Don’t Look Now. We now anxiously anticipate our final year. The 49er — 30 Sophomore Class History In the autumn of 1947 we, the class of 1931, entered Salisbury High School. Nick Shayka became our class leader and Miss Wean and Mrs. Dunmire were our class advisors. On October 14, we took the initiation. For the first time in the history of Salts-burg High, a Sweater King, along with a Sweater Queen, was selected. The dance was a great success. Our freshman year quickly came to an end. We returned once again to begin our sophomore year. Our class leader was Betty Dilts and our home room teachers were Miss Jackson and Miss Martin. In November we finally received our class rings of which we are so proud. The dance we had, proved to be successful. The year went rapidly and by the time next fall comes we shall be prepared to use the title Juniors. ROW I D. McCreary. B Morton, J. Palmer, J. Reedy, j. Solar. B Dielts, R. Vought. R Forney, E. Sutyak, Campitella, Marts Football Highlights The Saltsburg High School Trojan football squad climaxed a successful season by copping six victories and suffering only two dark marks on their otherwise perfect record. These marks came under the hands of Bell Township when our boys tied them, 6-6, in a muddy field, but came up still holding out an undefeated slate. Then the Kiski Cliff-Dwellers came to the Trojan field to hand our boys the first bitter defeat of the season, taking us over, 13-2. This setback did not make the boys lose spirit, instead they came to Trojan field to play under the lights — the first night game in the history of Saltsburg High — to defeat a fighting team from Avonmore, 19-0. This spotless record of the Trojans did not come by athletic ability alone. The perfect team” must also have leadership and good coaching, and Coach Bartlebaugh has ably filled that position. Also Mr. Coulson, the new assistant coach, gains some laurels from his showing on our football field. The Saltsburg High Trojan football squad will be minus the following boys next year, as they leave S.H.S. and its field of sports to carry on their shoulders more responsibilities in life. Rabbi ' Maloy — ranking third in the county scoring honors with 67 points. 'Tucker' Ednie — follows with 13 points. Butch Buczak — gained recognition with his first and only touchdown of his football career. Richard Danesi, Richard Lynch, Tony Capuzzi, Ronny Coulter, David Stuby, Shirley Jones — will also leave vacant spots in next year’s lineup. Although these boys will be leaving S.H.S. the Coach will have good material for a strong football squad next year. Thf. 49er — 4S Boys, always remember the sportsmanship code: He keeps the rules. He keeps faith with bis comrades, plays the game for bis side. He keeps bins self fit. He keeps bis temper. He keeps from bitting a man when be is down. He keeps bis pride under in victory He keeps a stout bean in defeat, accepted in good grace. He keeps a sound soul and a dean mind in a healthy body. Here’s to the Unsung Scrubs of Saltsburg High Although the first string is the main goal for most beginners, the scrubs are the unsung heroes of any team. It is against them that the elect eleven must practice and scrimmage to better themselves for the oncoming games. The following poem is dedicated to the Scrubs: Fred Anderson, Harry Duntnire, James Pierce, John Buczak, Richard Lynch, David Stuby, Don Campitella, Joe Juliane, Steve Bair, Ted Sutyak, Joe Vatter, and George Cicio. Here's to the unsung heroes, the subs Whose main goal is to make the team Although he's small and young, he's just a scrub But, he's got four years in which to dream. He's got ambition, the brain, the braun Some football know-how (that's the story) And when the team's the talk of the town, He rises with them in their glory. He knows he's helped to make them strong He's got the bruises to prove it—(Here) And while warming the bench, he fights along. Knowing he's got a better chance next year. — by Delia D'Angelo Tilt '49CR — Basebal The S. H. S. Trojans came up on top with an undefeated baseball season, as they took over a five-game schedule with ease. The team was built around Ed Hrabosky and Joe Bair, the only veterans from last year. Honors were equally shared among the entire team while teamwork and cooperation proved successful. Capable scoring and managing was under the handling of Frank Tuzi with Mr. Simpson as victorious coach. Coach s Comments DERAN — Rookie Frosh catcher did an outstanding job of handling twirlers. TUCKER EDNIE — Follows instructions perfectly and hustles all the time. ED HRABOSKY Outstanding pitcher and base runner. TONY CAMPITELLA — Ball hock. BOB HELFER — Consistent hitter and dependable third baseman. JIM FILLAR — Future great pitcher. JOE BAIR — Team's slugger. ART FLICK Dependable left fielder. JIM SLOSARIK Rookie second baseman with propositions. In some games, when Ed Hrabosky pitched, Joe Bair played second base and Fillar played first. Hrabosky was the winning pitcher for the Elders Ridge, 8-7, defeat (struck out 23 men). Defeated Kiski Varsity, 3-1 (struck out 7, allowed 3 hits). Fillar winning pitcher for Bell Twp., 7-3; Kiski, 20-2. Ednie winning pitcher for Elders Ridge. 33 — Thf. High scorer for the season was Dottie King with 68 points; Alma Auen, Delia D'Angelo with 16 points respectively; Pauline Kozub, 12, and McCreary with six points. The free for all games between Avonmore and Elders Ridge highlighted the season as the most hard-fought-for wins for the Trojanettes. Due to unforeseen happenings, Miss McCarl was the girls' coach for six games. Mr. Simpson took over for the remaining games. Missing from next year's lineup are seniors: MARTHA COLEMAN — You could always depend on her to pass the ball along the center line to the forwards. A hard player who puts everything she has in a game. JANET ROSE, Guard — She goes up and always comes down with the ball. With her height and ability, Janet will be a loss to next year's team. They won their first two league games, Bell Twp., 53-20; and Franklin Twp., 47-32, before they lost to Trafford, 41-32, and Export, 49-47. The next game they tried to pull through to keep up with the fast-moving section, but they fell short losing the game to Franklin Twp., 44-42. The Trojans seemed to be in an unexplanable slump because they lost all hope for their section when they lost to their arch rival. Bell Twp., by a score of 37-33. The boys then played Trafford but they didn't have their hearts in the game and came out in under to the unbelievable score of 66-47. The boys have one more chance to make it a successful season when they enter the Indiana County Tournaments February 28. They will be out to bring the trophy home. Koontz, Saltsburg H. S. A golden beam of sun. On a day just begun; What could be better? Peace in your heart. As the day you will start; What could be better? A hearty meal to eat. So your tasks you can meet; What could be better? With the birds singing gay. As you work through the day; What could be better? A victory won. And the job well done; What could be better? A moon light night. With the stars out bright; What could be better? A clean, fluffy bed, A soft pillow for your head; What could be better ? A peaceful sleep. As the night moves in deep; What could be better? To live when I die. With God up on high; That would be better! Later, with the permission of the author, this same poem was printed in Sermons In Poetry. The '49er 66 Try, Try, Try A word to the graduate — just a word. It's one you have so often heard, It's only three letters, hut till you die. You'll hear this word it's TRY TRY TRY. Try to win in whate'er you do, Try to make yourself proud of you, Try to follow the Golden Rule, Try to study, though out of school. Try to cherish your fellow man. Try to do a thing and you can, Try to offer the best you've got, Try to better your neighbor's lot. Try to stay healthy and happy and wise. Try to keep sparkle and glow in your eyes. Try to make progress through all of your life. Try, try again, any time you meet strife. Try to replace hate with love, Try to obey the Golden Rules of God above. Try to replace deceit with trust. Try to do everything with stride of must. Try in your utmost intentions to. Make great thing come by, you. If at first you don't succeed remember, then. Success comes to those who TRY TRY and TRY again. — By Delia D'Angelo 67 Thr '49RR The 49er — 68 69 — Thf ’49fr Essay Winning First Prize in Penna. Safety Contest Sponsored by National Grange Good Manners on the Highway DAVID HOWE KOONTZ — Age 16 New Alexandria, Pa. Community Grange 1994 The author read his essay before the Diamond Jubilee Session at Reading on October 27 Hello, there. Make room for me; I'm your conscience. I tell you what's right and wrong. I help you keep good manners, too. Oh, so you're going for a drive? Well, I'm going to come along. ' Nice night isn't it? Not going to end up nice if you don't slow up a little. I know of one accident that happened that way. It was a night like this. A boy was going to see his girl. He was late and so he pressed on the gas harder. Not many cars travel at night — I'll have the road to myself,” he said. But those other lights just seemed to appear. Here lies a speedy driver. Remember — Slow down at sundown. Hey, don't cut your corners like that. Carelessness doesn't pay. I know of another driver who was careless. He liked to see how fast he could go around corners. Once he went around a sharp one. He didn't see the other car in time, and wham! Here lies a careless driver. Always slow down before reaching a curve. What are you doing; stopping for a drink of beer? Mustn't touch. You see once there was a fellow who was feeling just fine. He only had two bottles of beer. He jumped into his car, drove down the street, went through a red light, side-swiped a car, just missed a child, and hit a telephone pole; good and hard. Here lies a drunken driver. Never drive while intoxicated. That's a good boy, pass it up. Listen bub. keep on the right side. I once knew a lady who loved to straddle the white line. One day she went over the top of a hill, but she never landed at the bottom. She disobeyed traffic rules. Here lies a disobedient driver. Keep to the right of the highway. Look, son, you better signal when you turn. You might land somewhere where it isn't nice or easy. Just like that young driver who didn't feel like giving a signal at a turn. That car was coming faster than he had anticipated. Here lies a lazy driver. Always give hand signals so other drivers know what you are about to do, and give them in plenty of time so they have time to act. Don't pass him, you're too close to that curve. John Dow did that once, but he didn't know that road had a washout. It caused him to lose control of his car. It turned over and the other car hit him. Everyone was killed. Here lies a driver in too big a hurry to take time to be safe. Take time to be safe. Haste makes waste. When you do pass a car don't cut in so quick. You may land with the other folks I've been telling you about. Mr. Ex, for instance, cut in quick, but he never knew that the other driver didn't expect that and speeded up a little. Here lies a driver that is a cutter in. Never cut back into line until you observe the car passed in your mirror. Well here you are; home, safe, careful, and happy. You will remain the same as long as you have good driving habits and manners. Our highways are made to be safe and comfortable. They have ample room for everyone. Our inspectors keep our cars safe. The rest is up to the individual and his manners. Keep your head, be alert, change your driving to meet conditions. Above all, obey all traffic rules. Don't cheat yourself. Bye. Only a few things have been mentioned. A few others are to remember not to use the highway for a race track; always know where you arc going or move completely off the highway to con-cult a map or ask questions; be good to yourself and everyone e se; don't be a road hog; use your manners, be polite.
