The Staff has laboured to keep alive through this book, the school’s many and varied activities which go to make up a wholesome school life. We, the class of nineteen hundred forty-seven, respectfully dedicate this volume of the La Saltianna to Mr. Clarence Walters in appreciation of his service as janitor and for his kind consideration and help to the class. 7QdwUnUbuUiosi R. L. SIMPSON Tomorrow is in the keeping of the schools of today. It will be a question of one world or more. Education can not and must not shirk its responsibility. From the schools of the world, and especially from those of America, must come the leadership. The thinking of a community must be directed away from group patterns of every kind and focused rather upon building up individual self-respect. He who makes a contribution to society has proved his worth. Yes, learning to live together is a challenge. It will demand our best thinking and our best living. It will require infinite patience and infinite tact, but it is worth the effort. R. L. SIMPSON Supervising Principal Westminster College, B.S. University of Pittsburgh, M.Ed. BASKETBALL—1946- 1947 The basketball Warriors of Saltsburg High, 25 strong, reported for practice in November to be greeted by a new coach and a new system of play. Led by Captain Sam Rossi and two returned members of last year’s varsity, they slowly rounded into shape while losing four of six practice games. The strong competition in Section 22 of the W. P. I. A. L. held the Warriors to a 5 won and 5 lost record at the finish. This record placed the team in a tie for third place with Bell Township for the Section 14 games. The season was highlighted by the home victories over our local rivals, Bell Township 33-32, and Avonmore 27-22. The drawings for the Indiana County Tournament found Saltsburg stacked against Cherry Tree in the preliminary round. After a well played game the Red and White were on the short end of a 51-46 score. The loss of Captain Rossi, Bucco, and Tuzi will be felt next year, but returning will be Tony Campitella, Eddie Hrabosky, Bill Robinson, Art Flick, Tucker Ednie, Bob Maloy, and Jim Slo-sarik. The battle-scarred J. V.s who take the bump in varsity practice but never see the headlines, ended their season with a 7 won and 6 lost record. Led by the shooting of Dave Stuby, Fennell, Prether, Hoffman, Anderson, Fillar, Rudolph and Singleton played good basketball, and are looking ahead to a place on the Varsity next year. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Saltsburg girls had a very successful season winning 1 1 games and losing 2. Bell Township and Avonmore being the only teams to triumph over the Red and White. The first six were: Helen Troup, Captain; Frances Pelchar, Florence Fillar, Virginia Coleman, Martha Coleman, and Jean Johnston, with Louise Reedy and Delia D Angelo capable substitutes. Only 2 veterans will be lost to the team, but with this year’s strong replacements we should have a winning team next year. High light of the year was the game with the undefeated Avonmore team. Trailing the entire game the girls refused to admit defeat and finally came through within the last two minutes, winning by the score 27 26. Now it so happened that Tietge owed Deano $5.00 and Deno owed Eddie $5.00. Each had a feeling of embarrassment in the presence of his creditors when Mule walked in. Tietge asked him for a loan of $5.00. Mule was agreeable and gave him a $5.00 bill. Tietge thereupon handed it to Deano paying his bill. Deano passed it to Eddie thereby liquidating his debt. Eddie then used it to pay back to Tietge the money he owed him. Upon receiving it Tietge handed it back to Mule with many thanks for the favor. Now all the debts arc paid and every is happy. Figure it out for yourself and then loosen up. High School Student: Won’t your parents be surprised when you graduate?” Deano: No, they have been expecting it for years.” Wes: Can you stand on your head?” Deano: No, it's too high.” Tietge: One man in New York dies every minute. Deano: Yeah! I'd like to see him.” Pop, a boy at school today told me that I looked like you.” And what did you say, son?” Nothing, pop, he was bigger than Tietge: I’m not myself today.” Deano: Well, whoever you are it’s a great improvement.” Mr. Simpson: Laugh and the class laughs with you—but you stay after school alone.” Mr. Nelmes: Wes, can you tell me the meaning of optimist?” Wes Tietge: Yea, that’s a guy that checks your eyes.” Miss McCarl: Deano, how did you get that black eye?” Deano: Protecting a little boy.” Miss McCarl: That was noble, who was he?” Deano: Me.” Judge: Gentlemen of the jury, have you reached a verdict?” Foreman: We have, your honor, the jury are all of the same mind—temporarily insane.” A northern view of the AROUND OUR SCHOOL!
