All State Music Camp . . . . . . eubz 6,644 Pzqaleey -I During the summer of 1971, Kay Fain, my former classmate and I, Dianna Randall, were traveling on a safari through the jungles of Africa. We had been sent there by the company for whom we worked in order to gather research material for a program in which the company was engaged. This was the first day of our travel and everything went smoothly. We camped that night, and were awakened early the next morning byastrange sound. Running to investigate, we found a caterpillar. I saw a blond, curly headed young man whom Isoon identified as Bill West, another member of my 1961 graduating class. When I found the project Bill was working on was the construction of a highway straight through the tangles of the jungle, I was flabbergasted. The immensity of this undertaking completely astounded me. Rain was prevalent in those next few days of traveling, and we were frequently forced to stop and take shelter. We were once forced to set up camp in a small clearing within sight of a river. When we had settled down within our tents , the shrill cry of human voices reached our ears from the vicinity of the river. Our guides helped three boat loads of people to the shore while Kay and I took the drenched and weary travelers into our tents. One face in the midst of all stood out. No, 1 thought, it cou1dn't be! But it was! Armando Montijo, who had also graduated with Kay and I, stood staring back with equal disbelief. I soon learned that he had become interested in big game hunting after becoming partners with the fabulously wealthylohn D. Rockerhound from New York City. Actually, hunting on this continent was no new thing for Armando, he told us that he had traveled around the world several times and this was merely his vacation trip. Armando and the rain left us about the same time. Late in the afternoon of the next day we came upon a small camp. It seemed unoccupied so we decided to rest and see if anyone returned. Iwas entirely unprepared for what happened next, for as l satreading, the group of campers returned and in the lead I recognized Patty Oldham, a '61 graduate too! I knew Patty had become a roving reporter for the Chicago Tribune a few years ago, but l had no idea her job took her to such distant places. Alittle later we reluctantly said our farewells to Patty and turned back to our travels. We arrived in a small village a day later and in no time had found Maxine Grubaugh, one more '61 graduate. She told me that she had come here to help the natives, she was now a registered nurse. She also surprised us by formally inviting us to her soon-to-come wedding. I-Ier husband to be was the surgeon in charge of this newly built hospital. That night we stayed with Maxine in her comfortable little home, We left the next day at noon, for our journey had just about come to an end. Near the edge of the jungle, we saw a large camp, just off the side of the path. Seated in the center of the camp grounds, I noticed a man in front of an artist 's drawing board with pencil in hand. He looked vaguely familiar but it wasn't until he said I am Alfonso Cardenas, from the U.S.A. , was Icertain. Here, too, was an old '61 graduate from Salome High School. l am a commercial artist now and have traveled all over the world painting and drawing for my employers. Leaving the jungle and turning home was a sad affair for me, I knew I would never return and I hated to leave all my classmates behind. I ezwbz 6644 aff l, Alfonso Cardenas, will my ability to get excused tardy slips to Bobby Sweetland. I, Kay Fain, do hereby will my scattered freckles to Sharon Martin. I, Maxine Grubaugh, will myabilitytocontinuously forget books, and lose things in Mr. Myers' classes, to Martha Canion. And My old tattered physiology book to Angela Wolfe. l, Armando Montijo, will all my classroom brains to Jack Glenn. I, Patty Oldham, being of sound mind and body, do hereby will my beloved cheerleading uniform to any lucky girl who, because of her height, gets stuck on the end. To all the Quartzsite kids my many, many miles on the bus f56, 168 to be exactj in return for an education. And my president 's gavel to a BOY . I, Dianna Randall, in this year of our Lord nineteen hundred and sixty-one, being of sound mind and body, do here- by bequeath my ability to get along with Coach Wease during basketball season to any girl who goes with a varsity player. Also my best parking spot on lovers' lane to Jim Hoggatt, and my ability to make C's in typing to David Traxler. I, Bill West, will my ability to get along with all the faculty of Salome High to James Rogers.
