The track team of 1957 included lettermen Dave Schaffner, Don Sinclair, Fred Lyon, Bob Quesnel, Bob Wiederrick, Don Aldous, Don Whitley, and Mike Gwartney. There were many other thinclads who were out running during the spring but did not letter. Salmon participated in four track meets during the spring, always placing several men in them. The first at Corvallis, Montana saw the Savage 880 relay team of Schaffner, Aldous, Lyon, and Quesnel, take second. Schaffner was second in the broad jump with a leap of HARVEY WELCH. Coach 20' 4 and third inthe 440. Sinclair was third in the mile run and Lyon fifth in the 220 to round out the Salmon men placing. At the Ricks Invitational the 880 relay team of Schaffner, Whitley, Lyon, and Quesnel took second. Placing third was Schaffner in the 440. Quesnel was fourth in the l00. Taking two fifths was Wiederrick in the discus and high jumps. At the District track meet at Rexburg, for the third straight week the 880 relay team took second. This time composed of Whitley, Gwartney, Aldous, and Quesnel . Wiederrick leaped into second in the high iumps. Quesnel ran second in the l00, Lyon third in the 440. The above were eligible for the regionals the next week. Also placing was Whitley who was fourth in the 220. The final track meet was the Regionals at Rexburg. The 880 relay team failed to go to state as they finished third instead of the required second. Lyon also missed placing fourth in the 440. 48
