You were born at Brighton, Missouri December iS, l902. You are one of four boys in your family. You attended grade school at Council Hill and Mor- ris, Oklahoma. You attended high school at Morris, Boynton, and Council Hill, Oklahoma. You attended Northeastern State College, Tahlequah, O. S. U. at Stillwater and University of Colorado, Boulder, Colorado. You hold two degrees, a Bach- elor of Arts and a Master of Arts. You were married to Miss Lucille Garrett of Stilwell on January l, 1926. You have been a member of the state textbook committee, a member of the board of directors for Oklahorra Education Association, President of Northeast District, Oklahoma Education Association, Vice-President of the Oklahoma State l'1eart Association, director for Oklahoma State accrediting association for the department of Education, and member of the state legislative committee for O. E. A. Your philosophy is Don't let anyone be a better friend to you than you have been to them. Two outstanding events in your life were: winning high School Invitation Tournament, the first time a tournament was held at N.E.S.C. in 'l9l8, Recog- nized by state school administrators association for having served twenty con- secutive years in one school system. As Superintendent you seen' never to grow tired of listening to or caring for the problems, wants and desires af students and teachers. The type of dress, the worn out shoes, or the home they came from seem never to influence or al- ter your decisions. They always find a welcome in your office. Your lite of public service and devotion to your school and community has produced one of your fine qualities that of a crusader for human rights among all students and citizens. Your life, G. R. Hurd, may it be filled with many memories of men and women who are and will become doctors, teachers, lawyers, business managers, bankers, secretaries because of your faith in young people. This volume XVI of the Black Diamond Yearbook is dedicated to Superintendent G. R. Hurd who has soent twenty-five years in service in Sallisaw City Schools. We were never a group to do things by hall measures. We were either very, very, goodl' or we were horrid , We can only hope that thoseoccasions wtten we were good will so far over- shadow the times when we were bad that the bad will soon be for- gotten. ' During our Sophomore year our officers were Donnie Morgan, president, Hill Chuculate, Vice-President, and Cora Sue Chitwood, Secretary. Our officers during the Junior year were Bill Agent, President, Dean Hunter, Vice-President, and Marcella Flanagan, Secretary, Two events highlighted that year for us the Junior Play, Men are Like Street Cars, and the Junior-Senior Banquet, From Te pees to Towers. Dur class otficers this year have been Leon Tatham, Presi- and insist on doing right. l will not ridicule nor defile the character of another, I will keep my self-respect, and help others to keep theirs. Monthly meetings are held at which time various things are discussed. Outside speakers from time to time add interest to the meet- ings. The FTA Charter now has 6 gold seals showing they have been in good standing for six years. FTA members do things that creat service to the community, to the school, to the club and to them- selves.
