Salisbury State College Salisbury, Maryland Volume CXI EVERGREEttikas been the name of SSC ' s yearbook since, the firsjpedition in 1926. The purpose of the „ yearbook summarized from that book is to keep alive the ever-green in the hearts of the students, the spirit of co-operation, loyalty and the v willingness to work and win which have possible this record of the year s progress. % TNi ' i.v : i fey ■ $. • « 2 v ' 7io no c %V ,w fat I| fflf . It has been said, ' that a picture is worth a thousand words.” SSC students express how they feel about SSC and college in general. 6 ' If ' A great deal of faces and backgrounds make up Salisbury State College. Although we all have our individual goals, opinions and style SSC is what makes us one. M.P. Minton, Dean of Admissions stated in an interview with the Flyer newsmagazine that, Many of the incoming students cite the value of having a faculty that is accessible. They find SSC is not so big that it will swallow them up, yet not so small that they will constantly be conspicuous. . One of the best selling tools we use to attract top calibar students is to let them talk to students who are already here. Without the closeness of the campus we would only be individuals; however, together we are Salisbury State College. 9 10 Homecoming 1986 celebrated on the weekend of October 24th-26th marked the 50 year reunion of the class of 1936. The alumni of Salisbury State participated in cocktail parties, luncheons, an anniversary tea and a special alumni dinner. The alumni dinner and grand reunion was held Saturday in the Ruth Powell Dining Hall following the homecoming victory in football when the Sea Gulls beat Montclair State 13-6. Lori McGee was crowned Homecoming Queen 1986 by last year ' s queen Lynese DeVance during halftime. A special edition to the football game was the performance of the alumni band. The Tennesse Williams play, Cat On A Hot Tin Roof was performed during the weekend in Holloway Hall by the College Players. Homecoming Cat on a Hot Tin Roof opened the 1986-87 College Theater season. They play opened on October 17th in Holloway Hall Auditorium. Salisbury State Theater also presented You Know I Can ' t Hear You When The Water ' s Running which opened November 14th in Holloway Hall also. 12 Theater 13 0f% Mi n o )i The United States Olympic Field Hockey Team played an exhibition match against SSC ' s Field Hockey Team October 15th on the Chesapeake Field. Coach Karen Weaver stated in an interview that It ' s the ultimate challenge for our players and coaches. ' ' The Salisbury State women s field hockey team ended their season by becoming the 1986 NCAA Division III national champions. This is the Sea Gulls first-ever national crown. On another positive note, the Sea Gull football team traveled to Phenix City, Alabama on December 13th to play Augustana College of Rock Island, Illionois for the NCAA Division III national championship in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl. Although the Sea Gulls did not come home with the final victory, they will always be our champions. Congratulations to both teams for an outstanding season. 16 No Fame, no Fortune, Just Fun! The Snow Queen, one of Hans Christian Andersons fairy tales, was reinterpreted as a modern ballet production, and opened in the Holloway Hall Auditorium on December 5. The production was made possible in part by a grant from the Salisbury State College Foundation. Another attraction in the fall was Las Vegas Hite which is sponsored by the Ruth Pow ell Student Employee Organization. Las Vegas Hite has proven itself as one of the events to bring administrators, faculty, staff and students together to socialize and have fun. The Blizzard of Bucks and Talent Hite were two more events that provided a chance for SSC to get together and enjoy themselves. Fall Events 17 Experience A great deal of students agree that one of the advantages of Attending Salisbury State College is that there is always ample opportunity to get hands on” experience in the community or on campus, which makes a definite difference in the end. Campus Life WT m 4H h ' r w i ' t wi HHHIk HI Jp m £ ' i ■ Irtft Our Town Becoming a student at Salisbury State College means that Salisbury will become our home from September through May of every year, and for some students it may be longer. It is always hard to leave home but somehow coming to the town of Salisbury seems to make it a little easier. The community participates in campus sponsored activities and they lend a helping hand when it is needed. The citizens rent out rooms or parts of their homes to students who prefer to live off campus. With the increase in enrollment there has been a definite parking problem. The businesses let students park their cars on their property. Salisbury State College is located on U. S. Route 13 at the southern edge of Salisbury. The location of the town itself allows the students to have easy access to Ocean City, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and Norfolk. The annual Salisbury Festival gives the campus community a chance to interact with community organizations. There is a never ending cycle of community and campus interaction and the 1987 Evergreen Yearbook Staff wanted to make sure the Town of Salisbury was included in the yearbook since it is a part of our life at Salisbury State College. 38 R, O. T. C. The Military Service Department offers both a four year and a two year program of instruction leading to a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. The Reserve Officer ' s Training Corps course covers management, national defense, military history, leadership development, military courtesy, discipline, and customs. There is no obligation with the two year basic course. The two year advanced course provides further instruction in leadership development, organization, management, and tactics and administration. ROTC gives students the opportunity to increase their self confidence and improve their self discipline. The ROTC program is more than a class and more than an organization. The department and its participants are actively involved in numerous campus and community activities. 40 jMm WJ- ! Jp ; , The ROTC program gives students the opportunity to participate in realistic military and adventure training that goes beyond the classroom. This Spring some of the cadets went to Bears Den Park, south of Harper ' s Ferry which is part of the Applachian Trail in VA.
