The long lines and haggard faces of Drop Add officially marked the beginning of hard work and hard play in pursuit of an education. The Salisbury State Theatre was on stage with two student productions for those who appreciate the dedication of live performances. Others were treated to the offerings of SSPB ' s film series, the International film series, the Dance film series, and the Snack Bar videos. As well, live musical entertainment could be found through the Peabody Concert Series. While on the other side of campus, students were letting loose at two outdoor concerts featuring Bad Sneakers and Heat during the day. At night, SSPB brought the Coffeehouse to life with professional performers. But the Annual Talent Show allowed students to get up on stage themselves. The dances - who could forget the dances? Freshmen through Seniors partook of the variety of dances organized around campus. Activities sponsored dances in Tawes, while the Gull ' s Nest had a theme dance every Friday night. The Homecoming festivities provided a welcome relief mid¬ semester at the Civic Center. For those who would rather watch other people dance, the College Dance Company performed throughout the semester in a variety of concerts. Inevitably, finals took over our thoughts and actions as we studied until all hours. All we could wonder was - where had the semester gone? There ' s something fo cultural or contemporary 4 wt S r,, iveryone . . . Faithful Sea Cull supporters brave the cold and rain to cheer their team onto victory against Ramapo. events ? Salisbury State College Theatre opened its 85-86 season in October with Sophacles ' Antigone. When asked why this fifth century play makes “good theatre for SSC students, Paul Lewis, the leading man in the play responds, It brings about self-awareness and a way to learn about history. Kristine Lococo, the leading lady, responds, The classics are the groundposts of theatre today. She goes on to say that the play suggests to people today that there are principles worth dying for. Andrew Hepburn, director of the production, explains their choice of costumes, Masks are used in the ancient productions of Greek tragedies and comedies. They convey images of legendary figures, of gods and demi-gods. Our own production attempted to capture this grand, transcendant world of myth by means of masks. Moreover, we were trying to make the masks ' live ' , that is, to appear to change expression given the dynamic nature of speech, gesture and movement. When this happens, it makes for a powerful artistic experience. Cast members included Lori Beste, Kristine Lococo, Paul Lewis, Paul Daly, Kevin Adams, Dale Whitzel, Laura Schmidt and Rob Killmon. 6 Lynn Stefany, Karen Carlson and Kristine Lococo enter the dance armed and ready to party. 7 As the traditional bonfire was prohibited in Tawes, these fans help to bring the crowd to life. Rain forced the Homecoming Pep Rally into Tawes but couldn ' t dampen the spirits of our Sea Gull cheerleaders led by Cindy Conner. 8 9 Holiday Muses a Christmas celebration 10 The College Dance lompany contributed to estive atmosphere with talian Renaissance and 18th lentury court dancing )erformed here by Kathryn • lartin and Paul Pfeiffer. Jae Kyung on violin Clinton Adams on pia perform for SSC in th ongoing Peabody Con Series. Dave Ganoe, D of the College Center conceived of the serie 1982 to provide a co quality of classical mus variety to supplemen educational experience n Three different styles of dramatic performance came together in one powerful production this semester as SSC theatre presented Three American Writers. Dr. Robert Wesley took on the challenge of directing and performing Mark Twain ' s monologue, The Blue Jay Yarn. The story involves a narrator and another speaker, jim Baker, which called for the single performer to change characters before the audience, a transformation cleverly worked out by Wesley. Perhaps the most unique of the three plays is Shepard ' s Black Bog Beast Bait. Set in a desolate present day bayou landscape, suspense is provided as a beast terrorizes the community. The play came alive with cast members Geoff Wright, Greg Bradley, Kristine Lococo, Tom Walsh, Carrie Vasko and Lori Beste. The final play, Tennessee Williams ' 27 Wagons Full of Cotton, had all the expected elements of one of his plays, including a southern setting and down to earth characters. The cast featured Tom Patt, Joanne Linchuk and Paul Lewis. 12 Tug-of-war has these girls straining with anticipation as they join in the Go Bananas ' Contest. The Annual SSC Talent Show as always uncovered many promising performances . . . and some not so promising, but entertaining all the same. 13 Working Towards A Commo Dear SSC Graduates of 1986: It is with extreme pleasure that I express to you my hearty congratulations upon your completion of the requirements for graduation. You are to be commended for your diligence to the pursuit of higher education, and I can assure you that your degree will hold you in good stead as you further pursue your goals and ambitions in the working world. I know I speak for the Faculty, Administration and Staff of Salisbury State College when I say that we will remain interested in your future achievements as you strive to attain your ultimate goals. My very best wishes to each of you for Health, Prosperity and Happiness in the coming years. Sincerely, Thomas E. Bellavance President Students and faculty form a partnership 16 Salisbury Normal School first opened its doors on September 7, 1925 with an enrollment of 105 female students. Currently, Salisbury State has an enrollment of over 4000 undergraduates and over 400 graduate students representing 22 states and 13 countries. The College offers 27 academic majors leading to Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees. Business Administration accounts for 15% of the students. Liberal Studies comprises 8%, with Nursing capturing 7% of the students. My how we ' ve grown! 17 Students try to absorb as much as possible in the short 14 weeks they ' re here. Who says you can ' t enjoy typing papers? 18 ■Mr. I saw this done once on ' That ' s Incredible ' ! 19 The years may be gone will last forever. May 24, 1986 Dear Seniors: Allow me to offer sincere congrat¬ ulations on your achievement. Your graduation places you among a most august group of alumni. Many of your predecessors are making significant contributions in law, medicine, education, service, business, the arts and humanities. It is heartwarming to know those numbers will now increase by your presence. Today ' s world of work is constantly changing. We are moving from an industrial to a more service-oriented society. Technological, social, and world community pressures demand innovative and creative resolutions for a myriad of problems. The bestowal of your degree reflects the faculty and administration ' s total confidence in your ability to share the mantle of responsibility for those solutions. Graduates of Salisbury State are highly regarded and sought after by employers, as well as graduate and professional schools. Organizations such as these will view you for what you are, the finest college graduates available virtually anywhere. Your only limitations in employment and advanced studies will come if you fail to recognize your own potentialities. While you may have attained some specific occupational training, it will be the quality education you received that stands as the hallmark of your Salisbury State experience. Today, our complex world society generates a continuous demand for skills upgrading, and ever-higher levels of critical and refined thought. Therefore, you can expect the educational direction you began here to become a lifetime pursuit. Again, I offer you congratulations and wish you peace, health, and happiness throughout your lives. All campus organizations have the opportunity to become recognized and receive money from the student activity fees budget. Many clubs prefer to remain inde pendent and generate their own funds. Regardless of their affiliation, SSC ' s student organizations are a great asset to our campus socially, academically, and culturally. A discussion of the many activities sponsored by these groups would require the entire book. Each of us has been involved, either directly or indirectly, with these events and realize how bland and unstimulating our campus would be if it were not motivated by students striving to nurture their special needs and interests. Unfortunately, we do not realize what a fiercely devoted knit of students we are until we reflect on all the extra-curricular events we attended or organized. Such dedication has been overlooked lately with talk of apathy among our ranks. In light of such pessimism especially, the student leaders involved in these organizations deserve a great deal of respect and gratitude for their dedication and service to campus life. It is their involvement which allows these clubs to prosper year after year. Ken Paulus keeps SSPB running smoothly. The strength of our spirit student organizations. Student Orienting Students (SOS) is designed as an orientation program to help freshmen develop academic survival skills and a support network among their peers. The program introduces students to campus life, cultural events, and the extra services offered. As well, it coaches freshmen in how to study and learn in informal classroom settings. The SOS organization sponsors the Wilderness Program during the summer which has taken incoming students canoeing in Canada, cycling in New England, and sailing on the Chesapeake Bay to allow them to develop friends and contacts before actually entering SSC. Some even suggested that he was beginning to molt. In response, the Alumni Association set out to design the new look for our mascot. “Sammy the Sea Gull hails from the same hatchery that produced the Baltimore Orioles ' Oriole. He is brought to life through Michelle Holmes, an SSC sophomore. She is five feet, five inches tall and a graduate of the official mascot training school. She has had to learn quite a bit, beginning with getting Sammy on. Congratulations!! too 101 It can never be said that Salisbury State College doesn ' t provide the opportunity for a well- rounded education for its students. Included in its offerings we found intramural sports to include basketball, softball, indoor soccer, volleyball, and flag football. If we weren ' t up to exerting ourselves, a crowd could always be found in the College Center playing Trivial Pursuit or video games. A more relaxed atmosphere was always present in the lounges of the dorms where people escaped to the world of soap operas or television sports. At night, the city of Salisbury invited us to partake of two dollar movies on Tuesday nights or window shop in the mall. We could even be found at the bowling alleys or eating in the vast array of restaurants surrounding the college. Moreover, we found ourselves immersed in refreshments at the Phoenix, or dancing away at the Flying Club. But of course, there remained the famous watering holes known as the Firehouse (Bogart ' s? Country Palace?) and the Circle Bar, and Byrds (Sam ' s?). While we recouped from such immersion, we watched our roommates play practical jokes on unsuspecting neighbors at the risk of being written up by an R.A. Each of us has our own memories of antics performed on campus. Sometimes, but not always, we got away with them. In unique ways we all felt the feeling of unity and belongingness whenever we walked around campus and greeted friends, reminding us of those crazy times.
