Salisbury State College Y YERGREEN , 1980 CONTENTS SENIORS 17 STAFF 37 CAMPUS LIFE 143 CREEKS 173 131 EVENTS 3 A great deal of work goes into the choosing of a yearbook theme. End¬ less “brain-storming,” cautious reviewing, and unbiased delibera¬ tion, breed a notion that seems per¬ fect. A yearbook theme should be general and relate to the school. Sal¬ isbury State College has made it through a lot of changes this past year, that are as varied as the stu¬ dents themselves. For that reaso n this year’s theme is . . . 4 A YEAR OF TRANSITION “transition: a passing from one condition, form, stage, activity, place to another; a period of pass¬ ing.” We enter from different loca¬ tions, with diverse back¬ grounds and unique values. We come together to begin our individual transitions; yet, our passages are filled with experiences common to all. ‘■tlWlv 1 v r The problems we encoun¬ ter will ofttimes be the same, but as time passes on, we will each seek our own solutions. And when it is time for us to leave, despite all we’ve shared, we will remain individuals. What we experienced can never be changed, yet we will be far different persons from when we began. ... i The major transition at SSC this year was the change surrounding the Office of the President. After nearly a decade of dedi¬ cated service to this institution, Dr. Nor¬ man Crawford regretfully left office. In exchange for his deep concern for the student body, we would like to wish Dr. Crawford the best of luck in whatever path he chooses to follow. 6 Major changes were evident throughout the campus during the year. A revised “Alcoholic Beverage Policy’’ became the subject ot considerable discus¬ sion among all members ot the college community. A remodeled Caruthers Hall opened its doors; and a new Maintenance Building was com¬ pleted. The College welcomed a new head football coach, Mr. Bill Yea- gle, who led the Seagulls to a winning season. 7 December 4 A day at Salisbury State Col¬ lege may start out at a parking lot that has no available park¬ ing space. Upon arriving at school a person could end up in class that is too tull and noisy to hear the instructor or is empty and so quiet that it is impossible to think. In the evening it is possible to arrive at a school tunction and have to sit in the back. Usually the people that are stuck sit¬ ting in the back are also blessed with the privilege of being last to leave. And of course it is raining when you get back to the parking lot. 10 14 15 Picture yourself on the sea of a setting sun, the salty air and the taste of your lover’s hair, inside you want to fly. Come to the magi¬ cal mist where the ocean’s kissed a thou¬ sand kisses or more on the sandy shore and never says good-bye. Come feel the warm of the breeze as the swaying trees car¬ ess the velvety skies like a whisper telling you to come and fly. Run with the wind at your side let it set you free. I’ll watch the sun in your eyes as the seagulls fly along this lover’s isle. US® You are my love and my life, you’re my everything. You calm the sea of my soul oh so tenderly, it makes me high. Picture yourself on the sea . . . Come feel the warmth of the breeze. . . He maketh me to lie down in the wee hours; His homework leadeth me through the stacks. He restoreth my apathy; he leadeth me in the path of knowledge for my own sake. Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of failure, I will fear plagiarism. The professor is with me, his assignments and his staff they exploit me. He preparest a test for me in the presence of my classmates. He annointest my head with trivia (meanwhile my mug runneth over.) Surely, after many scrolls are published while he is at SSC, He will wear the cloak of Holy Tenure forever. 47 OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT Linda Ross Assistant to the President Raymond Shingler Director of Data Processing L. I 70 STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION The major student organization on campus is the SGA, the Student Government Association, which supports and finances the major interest groups of the students. It is the official representative agency of the student body and every full-time and part-time student, by the payment of his Student Activities Fee, becomes a mem¬ ber. The Student Activities Fee entitles each member to receive copies of campus publications (i.e., newspa¬ per, yearbook, and literary magazine) and free admis¬ sion to many campus events sponsored by the SGA organizations. Some publications are distributed in a controlled manner and thus are only available for full¬ time students. Students are represented on many college committees by the SGA. These include the Board of Visitors, Aca¬ demic Council and various other faculty committees. All SGA recognized organization operate for the benefit of all full-time students, both residents and commuters. The station receives its funds from a budget allocation of the SGA. The station management consists entirely of full-time students elected by the student staff members. DJ’s on the staff are mostly students with some faculty members also on the air. Any student who is willing to learn the station’s equipment and operate it in a professional manner is eligible to try for a radio show on WSSC. No FCC license, fees or vast technical knowledge is required of anyone wishing to get on the air. The station’s programming needs are rather simple: tell the students what is happening on the campus and play the music they like to hear, or music they can’t hear on commer¬ cial radio. Because of the SGA funding, WSSC does not choose to use paid advertising. As a result, the only com¬ mercial messages are those concerning student events, ser¬ vices, station promotion and items of interest to students. WSSC is located on campus in Tawes Gym. All shows are done live from the studio and are transmitted to residence halls on 73 am and to the local Cable-TV tower in town on 107.5 Cable fm. This facility also serves as a production studio for WSSC as well as the WSSC office. All of the pro¬ duction work, program scheduling, promotion, purchasing, training, office work, and pre-recorded programming are done by the student staff. This provides a valuable learning experience for those interested in a broadcasting career as well as being an interesting addition to one ' s college experi¬ ence. SLEEP 161 DECENBER GRADUATION I9J9 r? on| ggpp 8 {p ' jK -JhS 162 Graduation — the first day of the rest of our lives. As in high school, commencement instills a sense of joy, but also one of sorrow and fear. For most, sixteen years of educa¬ tion is now a thing of the past — joy at no more books, no more finals, no more classes at 8 a.m. But then the coin flips; we are now out on our own; independent, looking for work. We must face the world, although we may be afraid. We look back at our college life with regret: “I could have passed that exam;” “Why did I goof off so much!” But even though we no longer see ourselves as col¬ lege students, two things will always remain constant; our memories and our friends. “Make new friends, but. keep the old: one is silver and the other is gold!” SSC — now in the past, but forever in the present. 163 I I DERBY DAYS 164 165 166 LAS VEGAS HIGHT 167 SPRING FORMAL 1980 ■ 168 169 NAY 170 171 ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA ■ Brenda Armstrong, Brenda Payne, Roxann Lilly, Beverly Brickhead, Diana Twilley, Leyell Murphy, Missing: Kay L.
