Windows. . Windows. . . allowing one to look out and see the world. And yet, windows also bring in light. For each of us, life is a system based on inside and outside. What we hold inside makes us who we are; what exists outside, in our environment, shapes us and reflects back to us our own identities. Windows cut through the walls between ourselves and our world. Through these windows we look out to see life around us, while tne light from without passes in. College is, in a way, a collection of windows: some may serve to illuminate us intellectually, others allow us to view social interaction, still others may show us what are known as friends. These figurative windows of our lives make possible all that we are touched by. A professor, explaining the beauty of a genetic test

; cross, serves as one of our windows to a world of information we may never have been aware of. A roommate, helping us to develop the attitudes and patience necessary to coexist with another human being, acts as a different kind of window. Chatting with friends at lunch opens windows on the ideas of others, while the lunch itself may draw back the curtains on what is and isn’t “mom’s home cooking. Windows may also serve us, surprisingly enough, as windows: Daydreaming out a classroom window, only to be called on by the instructor. . . Looking out your room window in the morning to get a first-hand weather report, only to find that it’s raining — again . . . Sitting in an exam, gazing at the window panes, knowing that somewhere somebody could pass that test, while all you can hear are the sounds of a softball game . . . Finding a yellow parking citation on your car windshield, knowing our boys in blue are on the job . . . Wondering why, when it’s 85 degrees outside (and 10 degrees warmer inside), they ever decided to make a dining hall with windows that don’t open 6
