Windows. . . allowing one to look out and see the world. And yet, windows also bring in light. For each of us, life is a system based on inside and outside. What we hold inside makes us who we are; what exists outside, in our environment, shapes us and reflects back to us our own identities. Windows cut through the walls between ourselves and our world. Through these windows we look out to see life around us, while tne light from without passes in. College is, in a way, a collection of windows: some may serve to illuminate us intellectually, others allow us to view social interaction, still others may show us what are known as friends. These figurative windows of our lives make possible all that we are touched by. A professor, explaining the beauty of a genetic test ; cross, serves as one of our windows to a world of information we may never have been aware of. A roommate, helping us to develop the attitudes and patience necessary to coexist with another human being, acts as a different kind of window. Chatting with friends at lunch opens windows on the ideas of others, while the lunch itself may draw back the curtains on what is and isn’t “mom’s home cooking. Windows may also serve us, surprisingly enough, as windows: Daydreaming out a classroom window, only to be called on by the instructor. . . Looking out your room window in the morning to get a first-hand weather report, only to find that it’s raining — again . . . Sitting in an exam, gazing at the window panes, knowing that somewhere somebody could pass that test, while all you can hear are the sounds of a softball game . . . Finding a yellow parking citation on your car windshield, knowing our boys in blue are on the job . . . Wondering why, when it’s 85 degrees outside (and 10 degrees warmer inside), they ever decided to make a dining hall with windows that don’t open 6 ■ m i Iliad . . . Spending half your life savings on Christmas window decorations, only to lose the Window Decorating Contest to a Christmas tree made from beer cans. . . Our windows make each of us an individual. Whether to stare blankly at the sunlight streaming in, temper what enters with a rosy hue, or eclectically blend both of these is a decision we all face — realize it or not. Our decision determines our life. 11 ■ i ' •S ' - ' v-. Obviously, the life as a Senior is not always an easy one. What with filling out credential files, applying to graduate school, being interviewed for jobs, computing GPA’s (which, by the way, officially don’t exist), completing degree requirements, and so on (ad nauseum), the Senior soon finds that his four glorious years of undergraduate education are coming to a close. Realizing this, he may: 1. Cry. 2. Laugh. 3. Drink himself into oblivion. 4. Study (to make up for three years of item 3). 5. Find a good analyst. PATRICIA L. As a college student, an individual must gather the courage to stick his head out the window (if he wants to see where he’s going). On the other hand, he’d better have enough presence of mind to duck back in when he sees a telephone pole aiming for him. Some students may never look out the windows — they ' re too busy with the poker game going on inside. Others never stop gazing through the window. Still others occupy themselves with trying to tell the bus driver what he’s doing wrong. However, somewhere in that busload, there are individuals who will look out the windows, play a few good hands of cards . . . and they may even help the driver steer now and then. Cheryl Wright 60 61 It’s not that commuters mind getting to the campus 30 minutes early for class, just to find a parking space; or that it sometimes gets annoying to not have anyplace to go during the day; or even having the feeling that you never really quite know all that’s happening on campus; it’s not that these things in themselves are all that bad — it’s just that you get a little tired of being “the forgotten student.” Sometimes, having a Commuter Parking Lot that looks like a relief map of the moon can tend to get you down. Occasionally, you can easily slip into the rut that says: “Why bother going all the way back to the campus for this event? It probably won’t be worth it anyway.” For some, commuting is a forced situation: what are you supposed to do when you’re 274 on a housing waiting list of 27077 ?Every once in a while, though, a sort of paranoia sets in: “I really don’t feel that ‘they’ are out to get me. In fact, a ' they’re-out-to-get-me ' situation might be easier to live with than this awful feeling that nobody even knows I’m here . . .” 62 63 MBI y 1 f|I 1 1 p ■ n 1 a fc j J F H f J J r ' w . . • t J 1 F V • , , . The Salisbury booters concluded their season with the Newport News Tournament championship trophy in hand after a 3-1 title victory over the Hampton Roads Soccer Club gave SSC a final record of 8-7-2. Only in 1947 has a Salisbury State team been able to match that eight win total. It took a late season spurt that brought six Sea Gull triumphs in their last seven games to turn a somewhat disappointing season into one of the best ever at Salisbury. 86 FIELD HOCKEY Since arriving on the campus of Salisbury State College in the fall of 1976, field hockey coach Sharon Tawes and her She Gull squads have compiled an overall 45-5-1 won-loss record. The 1978 squad had but four veteran returnees yet still managed to compile a 17-1 -1 record. Not only was the team young, but the schedule was one of the toughest so far. Coach Tawes remarked in the beginning of the season, We will need a lot of game experience because of all the new positions we’ve had to fill. I think we have a very quick A” team but this is the toughest schedule we’ve faced since I’ve been here. The She Gulls were 9-0 before their tie to the University of Maryland. Their first loss in two years was to the then second ranked University of Delaware and came at the 14-0-1 point in the season. Nine She Gull stickers participated in the Southeast Regional Tournament as members of the Washington Region College All-Stars coached by Salisbury State’s Sharon Tawes. From this tournament an all-star squad is picked to be participants in the Field Flockey National Tournament at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Washington. Three SSC players were selected to play at the Nationals: Sue Dennis, Joanna Myers, and Linda Ralph. The future of field hockey at SSC is bright indeed. The She Gulls play a tougher schedule each year with continued success. With only two girls graduating this year the nucleus for a powerful team will be there for years to come. The Sea Gulls had a surprise in store for James Madison University as SSC sprung a 13-9 upset over the Dukes, at the time the fifth ranked NCAA division III school in the country. Seniors Dave Kirchoff and Preston Phillips were recipients of the Bobby Richards Memorial Award after the season drew to a close. “I felt we had the potential for the division III playoffs if we played outstanding every game, but that was very tough to do considering the caliber of competition, said Coach Dick Yobst. Salisbury played five games against nationally ranked teams, including three division III schools. We were very competitive except for the Towson game, said Yobst. If we had scored five more points we would have finished 7-3, but that might as well have been a hundred points. FRONT ROW: Keith Lake, Juan Gabourel, Paul Capodanno, Jeff Sheets, Mo Dickerson, Archie Pruitt, Jim Hunt, Tami I Oliner (Manager). “This season was certainly disappointing to say the least,” commented Salisbury State College Men’s Basketball Coach Ward Lambert in reviewing the Gulls, 6- 20 performance for the 1978-79 season. “We did not play well together . . . especially defensively. We were inconsistent at point guard and our defensive play is reflected in the fact our opponents shot over 50 percent from the field against us.” SSC will see nine returning players back next year, however, and the 1979-80 schedule will have numerous additional opponents from NCAA Division III (non¬ scholarship division of which Salisbury is a member). “Hopefully we ' ll be more consistent next year,” said Lambert. “And there were some positive aspects of this past season. The brightest spot was probably the play of freshman John Berens. He filled a void for us and was our most consistent overall player. Junior Juan Gabourel ended the season leading SSC in most every statistical department including his 22.4 scoring average. Gabourel has netted 1,460 points in three years for the Sea Gulls placing him third on the all-time SSC career scoring list. He now trails Ron Gore (1,495) and Howard Shockley (1,519) in scoring at Salisbury State. Ty Marshall was the top floor shooter (.533) and rebounder (188) for SSC this past season as he closed out his Sea Gull career. 93 WOMEN ' S BASKETBALL Salisbury’s Women’s Basketball team closed out the 1978-79 season with an overall 6-13 worksheet. A youthful SSC basketball squad opened the season winning two of its first three games before dropping nine in a row. The season opener was a 57-50 triumph over defending MAIAW division II champion Maryland- Eastern Shore. The Salisbury State invitational tournament was the start of the distressing nine game losing skein for SSC. Coach Mariuma Morrison’s girls started putting it together near the end of the season as the six varsity underclassmen utilized their brief collegiate experience to the utmost knocking off Ursinus 78-59. The victory started Salisbury on a spurt that saw the She Gulls take three victories in four games with the only loss being 63-53 overtime setback to Loyola. mm 94 SITTING Dawn Marquess Dale Potter Sissy Natoli, Carolyn Huston, Carla Musselman, Lois Lane, Jennifer Sayre KNEELING Donna Cohee, Margie Knight. The Salisbury State College men’s tennis team went undefeated (4-0) against NCAA Division III competition for the third consecutive year in 1979 as the Sea Gulls posted an 11 -7 overall record. “Overa ll I feel we had another good year,” said Coach Dean Burroughs. “I guess our most outstanding match was our win (5- 4) over Heaverford College. They and Swarthmore have always been the strongest Division III teams in the East.” After a 2-4 start as a team, the Gull netmen recorded 8 wins in 9 matches, including two four-match win skeins, with only a loss to Navy in between. SSC women’s team posted a 5-5 dual meet record but won its third straight Maryland Association of Intercollegiate Athletics tourney title. SSC’s number one player Sue Foelber won the state tournament to repeat as the top female collegiate tennis player at a Maryland state college. The 1979 lacrosse season was one of come backs for fhe Salisbury State men’s stick squad. The Sea Gulls rallied from a 1 -6 start to wind up the year with a 7-7 record, a berth in the National Collegiate Athletic Association college division national tournament, and the number ten ranking in the country. The SSC ten accomplished all that under the tutelage of Coach Charley Clark, a come back story in his own right, who returned to the sidelines after a 21 year layoff. Salisbury opened its season at North Carolina State and took a 24-15 beating from the Wolfpack, the eighth ranked NCAA division I lacrosse school. Perennial division I power Washington Lee dropped SSC 16-11 and two college division national playoff squads, Maryland-Baltimore County and Loyola, socked the Sea Gulls 21-16 and 16-14 respectively. 104 -RONT ROW: Don Codignotto, Mike Simms, Phil Bauer, Mike Ritchey, Lewis Scharff (Co-Captain), Matt Lawrence (Co-Captain), Kevin Wynne, Mike Bracken, Brian Chetelat, Bucky Dennig, Russ Williams. Salisbury State’s women ' s lacrosse Coach Sharon Tawes knew that duplicating the She Gulls 10-3 record of 1978 would be a difficult task with only three starters returning in 1979 but, despite some additional hardships, the SSC stick squad posted a respectable 6-8 record. During the pre-season Tawes said, “This will be a rebuilding year for us, but the interest in women’s lacrosse is growing rapidly at SSC.” The She Gulls looked like a team in its rebuilding stages in their first game at Towson State as the Tigers plucked Salisbury 20-3. SSC went on to lose its first three games as Loyola and Maryland-Baltimore County claimed triumphs at Salisbury. 107 BASEBALL The Salisbury State College baseball team missed its fifth consecutive 20-game victory season by one contest in 1979 as the Sea Gulls posted a 19-11 -2 regular season slate. Coach Deane Deshon and his Sea Gull nine have logged an impressive 81-34-2 record over the past three years including two consecutive appearances in the NCAA Division III South Regional Tournament. Senior, third baseman Dave Funk (Bel Air), a 1978 All- American selection, topped the Gulls in five batting categories this spring including a .421 batting average. Funk also led Salisbury in runs scored (36) and hits (51) and tied for fhe feam leadership in home runs (4) and RBI (26). Senior catcher Tom Coulbourn (New Castle, Del.) also belted four home runs to tie Funk for the team lead and senior first baseman Brian Spiering (Greensboro) joined Funk with 26 RBI. SSC was also difficult for opponents on the basepaths as they successfully stole 99 bases in 106 attempts. The program has grown from 10 activities in 1974 to the current 15. The number of participants in Intramural activities is estimated at 800 and is increasing annually. The most popular activity is the basketball leagues and participation increased by 148 students over last year. Additionally, the number of volleyball teams has increased from 12 to 28 in only one year’s time. The most popular spring Intramural activity is softball with volleyball emerging as a close second. Other activities scheduled during the spring semester are mixed doubles tennis, weightlifting, wrestling and bowling. Even Dr. Crawford participated in the bowling league for several years until his schedule became too full. The Annual Goof-Off Day is also sponsored by the Intramural Office. All members of the college community are invited to participate in the afternoon’s schedule of activities. Held around exam time, Goof-Off Day provided students, faculty, and administration with a chance to take a break and get their noses off the grindstone. The Intramural program at Salisbury State College certainly satisfies the student need for athletic competition and enjoyment. Mr. Grady Armstrong, Intramural Director feels students need this kind of outlet to relieve them of the rigors of college life. “When a student says it was a good program and he really enjoyed himself, it’s a satisfying feeling,” commented Armstrong. 109 STANDING: Billy Dubois, Jay Udovich, John Hamilton, Bernie Guy, Bob Thomas, Lloyd Sigler (Coach). CROSS COUNTRY G O L F 110 The Salisbury State softball team lost more games during the 1979 season that it had over the past two years combined, but the She Gulls 12-5 record was a source of pride to Coach Troy Doyle who advanced his SSC diamond crew to the national playoffs for the first time in three years We played our toughest schedule this year. ' commented Doyle We went 23-4 over the past two years and still didn ' t make the nationals so we played the best teams we could find and beat most of them. The She Gull nine had a slow start and could only show a 2-2 slate after four games SSC then proceeded to reel off a ten game win skein against powerful foes like West Chester. Glassboro State, Millersville State, and Towson State Included in Salisbury ' s victory skein was a successful defense of the first place trophy at the D C. Sometimes it seems the only time people actually open up and show true selves is during a social function. It sort of scares you to think that you’re going to school with so many delinquents . . Actually, campus events this year were marked by less violence than in past years. Activities included everything from lectures and coffeehouses to a trip to the Bahamas. Coffeehouse performers included such favorites as Michael Cooney, Mike Williams, and Carolyn Odell. The cultural committee provided us with “Romeo Juliet”, “Michael Hennessy — the Mime and his Musicians”, “The Maryland Ballet , “Ramona Austin”, and “David Syrotiak’s National Marionette Theatre”. Concerts featured this year were “Mission Mountain Wood Band” and “Crown Height’s Affair”. 151 152 153 154 155 156 157 Jr 158 Christmas Week sponsored annually by the Residence Hall Association entered its fourth consecutive year in 1978. The week-long activities included the window decorating competition, the Student Government Association Christmas Social and the Christmas Party for children of faculty and staff. Throughout the week the bell tower carillon played carols. The excitement of Christmas Week peaked on Friday evening with the carolling competition. Winners this year were Manokin Hall and Alpha Sigma Tau, first and second place respectively. CHRISTMAS WEEK 159 DECEMBER GRADUATION Sharing Sessions were held at the Ocean Pines Country Club to allow faculty, administration, and students to discuss items of concern about the college in a non-threatening atmosphere. Members of the college community were selected to attend by Joe Hart and Danny Eusebio, sharing session coordinators. Transportation and lunch was provided by the Student Government Association. 160 Two hundred and forty-six degrees were awarded on December 21, 1978 at the Winter Commencement. The exercises began at 10:30 a.m. in the Maggs Physical Activities Center. Dr. Samuel Massie, department chairman and professor of chemistry at the United States Naval Academy was the speaker. 161 162 LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE Salisbury State College held its first Leadership Conference on March 30 and 31, 1979. Students from colleges and universities in Maryland, Dela¬ ware, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Washington, D C were in attend¬ ance. The students arrived Friday night and were greeted by SSC students in the Social Room of Holloway Hall. The purpose of the conference was to help students come to grips with their particular leadership style. David Schoumacher, night anchorman for WJLA-TV in Washington, D C. spoke at the luncheon in the Powell Dining Hall. His advice included ‘‘don’t be afraid to do it. . jump into the river with both feet. . . age is your greatest resource, 163 LAS VEGAS NIGHT iti Jtt • Hit i$t 164 “Do I hear $150,000, $160,000, $160,000 going once, going twice, sold to the man in the brown cowboy hat!” This was but one familiar comment heard throughout the evening at the fourth annual Las Vegas Night. Sponsored by the Residence Hall Association, Las Vegas Night was once again a success with a turnout of over 300 people. With black jack, craps, and poker taking place from 9 p.m. until midnight, the gamblers were ready to bid for prizes ranging from bakery goods and frisbees to dinners at Tony Tank Inn and Dockside Murphy’s. 165 166 167 Many campus organizations wind-up their year with a banquet at the Powell Dining Hall. The Food Service department provides excellent catering and cuisine for such groups as Beta Beta Beta, the Housing Staff, the Football Team and the Senior Nursing Students. John Gerrity was last seen boarding a plane to Texas to price cattle on hoof. . . 169 170 Sound-Tech and The Beginnings provided the music for the 1979 Spring Formal. Held in Maggs Gymnasium, on April 28, couples danced the night away at this CCPB sponsored event. SPRING FORMAL This year marked the first graduating class of nursing students from Salisbury Stafe College. In honor of the occasion a formal pinning ceremony and dinner were held at the Powell Dining Hall on May 4, 1979. Roses were given to each graduate and they received their Bachelor of Science Registered Nursing Degree the following day at Commencement Exercises. NURSING CEREMONY 171 172 For the first time in many years commencement exercises were held outdoors. United State Senator, Paul Sarbanes was the keynote speaker at the ceremony held on the front lawn of Holloway Hall. Over 400 degrees were presented on Saturday, May 5, 1979.
