M 64 Commuters Commuting students represent the largest segment ofSSC ' s population, com¬ prising people who are natives of the Salisbury area and those from beyond the Eastern Shore who are unable or un¬ willing to live on campus. Commuters face the perennial problems of adequate parking, or rather the lack of it, and a permanent, however adequate, place to gather on campus. The Snack Bar, a traditional focal point, was moved about campus as construction or public officials caught up to it. Concerning themselves with more than the academic and social aspects of college, some commuters got involved with campus organizations so the entire student body could benefit from the services available. 65 This Week, The Student Union Will Be Located . . Or, Where Can They Find A New Hiding Place For The Snack Bar? The fate of SSC ' s Student Union has been a long running story of mys¬ tery and intrique. Ever since con¬ struction began to rennovate the Mem¬ orial Student Union into a dining hall | the MSU has been moved to lounges in various dorms, the newly complet¬ ed section of the building it was kick¬ ed out of, and a big tent. The Tent, SSC’s very own M A S H unit, was eventually brough down by high winds and public officials, not necessarily in that order. A perma¬ nent -as-it’s-ever-gonna-be snack bar will be located in the new College Cen¬ ter. Added attractions will be the re¬ turn of TV and game rooms, as well as lounges for reading, talking, and sitting. The chase has been wearisome but interesting, to say the least. Who’d have thought a campus this size had so many hiding places? 66 67 Mary Abbott Wayne Adams Debora Adkins John Adkins Valerie Ahmuty Elizabeth Alio Karen Allen William Allen David Amann Jean Amery Julie Applegarth 70 Brian Austin Donna Baker Curtis Barnhart Clark Barr III Ann Marie Barton Nancy Baugher Walter Beal Patricia Beckett Vicky Bishop Bill Blum Mike Bradley 71 Barb Bradshaw Patrick Breen Diane Brewington William Brown Karen Bunnell William Byrd Thomas Campbell Wray Cannaday Leo Carlens Dean Carroll Sherry Carroll Phil Cartwright Dennis Cathell Milton Catlin Robin Chalk Paula Cherricks Randolph Chesser Debra Choulis Patty Christopher Sandra Coates 72 Melanie Cook Donald Cooper Timothy Corbin Mike Corrado Mary Jane Cox Cynthia Cunningham Judy Davis Patricia Davis 73 Sandy Davis Dennis Dehart Linda Deaton Connie De Shi elds Nancy DiMaria Alta Dixon Karen Donaldson Catherine Dougherty William Downing Dorothea Duffy Janet Dumay 74 Deena Dunnock Joan DuVal Dana DuVall Dorothy DuVall Glenn DuVall Mark Eberspacher Kathi Edwards David English John Ennis George Ensenat Lee Exans Mr. and Miss Salisbury State College, Levi Shade and Nancy Spence Betsy Fisher Patrick Fletcher Terry Flood Teresa Fooks Linda Gattuso Walter Geissdorfer Charles George Gary Givens Norman making another wise move. 76 Don Golacinski Mark Gooch Francis Gormley Marion Handy Karen Hart Susan Harrison Linda Haught Kevin Hayes Charles Hawke Brenda Heintzelman Debra Hickman Elbert Hicks Robin Higgenbottom Brian Hildreth Geri Hill June Hillock Sally Hilton Janet Howe Debbie Hudson Dee Hudson 77 Cathy Hurley Sheila Hurley Susan Hutchins Walt Hyland Catherine Jerman Katherine John David Jones Evie Jones Marla J ones Andrea Kasper Karen Kehm 78 Diane Kennedy Cynthia Kerrigan Sue Kimball Charles Klimak Tom Kloetzli Craig Larmore Joyce Lawrence Shannon Leahy Patricia Leap Joan Iieberman Patricia Iiechty 79 Richard Linthicum Charles Lister Cathy Littleton Jill Lyden Jacqueling Lynam Vicki Magdeburger Clyde Male Paula Martin 80 Ralph Mason Joe Massa Bruce Massey Gary McCabe Mary McCarthy Connie McDowell David McEvoy James McKittrick Melvin Me Mains Hope J. The Gulls ' next two games over Johns Hopkins, and Kean College gave them their fifth and sixth wins of the Season. Towson State ended the string of wins for the Gulls with a 21-3 victory. Towson ' s win made it the fourth year in a row in which they have beaten the SSC team at Tow- son. In her best game of the sea¬ son, guard Diane Stahl, a gradu¬ ating senior, led the Gulls in their win over Loyola in the MAIAW championship contest. Stahl scored 26 points. Senior center Gail Tatter- son lead the SSC Women’s Bas¬ ketball team in scoring and re¬ bounds throughout her final sea¬ son as a player on the team. She averaged a total of 20. 2 points per game and 15. 8 re¬ bounds per game. The She Gulls won their first three games and entered the Towson State Women’s Bas¬ ketball Invitational in Jan. with only one loss behind them--to the University of Maryland. The women lost to Loyola in first round competition and lost again to Morgan State in the consolation game by a score of 81-69. In one of the tightest games of the season the Gulls outlasted Glassboro State to squeek-by with a one point win. This win started a midseason upswing for the team in which they were able to sustain a five game string of wins. At the height of these wins, Tatterson led the Gulls in defeating Towson State 75-60. She was joined in this effort by Margie Knight. Madison ended the winning streak. The Gulls also dropped their next game to Lasalle 77- 68 . The final home game of the season against Western Mary¬ land was an easy victory for the women and put their record for the season at 10-6. The blow was a great surprise and disappointment to Coach Troy Doyle and the wom¬ en players. Dottie Duvall, a graduating senior who served as co-cap¬ tain of the team along with sen¬ ior Moochie Smith, took her place as one of the top hitters for the Sea Gulls. In highlights of season play, Joy Dempsey, a junior, knock¬ ed in the winning run in two of the Gulls’ biggest victories a- gainstTowson State and top rank¬ ed West Chester State. Pat Romeo, a junior, dis¬ tinguished herself by slamming in home runs against both UMES and Bowie State, making her a primary asset to the team at the clean-up position in the bat¬ ting order. Other members of the start¬ ing nine line-up managed to keep batting in runs were: Gail Bender, a graduating senior who played shortstop, right fielder Margie Knight, center fielder Teresa London, catcher Carol Summer, and Moochie Smith--the team ' s lead-off hit¬ ter. The Sea Gulls’ powerful of¬ fense averaged 17 runs per game. In their thirteen games they outscored opposing teams 219- 82. Sharing the pitching duties with Bowen was freshman Sue Phippen. Her record for the season was 3-0 with four saves. Phippen pitched the team ' s only shut-out game, which was a- gainst Bowie State. WOMEN ' S SOFTBALL TEAM SPRING 1977 FIRST ROW: G. Bender, J. Freshman Charley Hall set an individual record when he fired a total score of 71 in a guadrangular meet against Lo¬ yola, UMBC, and John Hopkins. The low score broke the rec¬ ord of 72 held by senior Chuck Wills. Until this season atotal score of 400 in a match has been as low as the golf team has scored. In the same meet where Hall set his new record, five SSC scorers shot under 80, firing a new team low score of 381. Chuck Wills, sophomore Dave Neyers and freshman Joe Le Favor each fired 79 ' s. Soph¬ omore George Jarboe fired a 73, which assisted in keeping the total score a low one. Be¬ side breaking these two rec¬ ords, the team also swept the meet. Coach Gretchen Byrd was very pleased with the team ' s performance this season. We played super, she said. I was waiting for us to break 400, but even I didn ' t think we would get the score down as low as we did. The team finished fifth in the Mason-Dixon Conference Tournament held at Hunt Valley Country Club in Baltimore. 107 Baseball The Sea Gulls baseball team displayed an awesome combination of strong hitting, accu¬ rate fielding, and tough pitching to win their first Mason-Dixon Conference Regular Season Championship. As host team for the confer¬ ence championship tournament the Gulls were able to capture first place in the tournament. At the NCAA Division III South Regional Tour¬ nament the Sea Gulls finished third. Throughout the season the team had been ranked as high as ninth in the nation. In field¬ ing as a team SSC had a . 957 average, placing them nationally in third place. The consistent hitting and high batting averages of Jesse Plum¬ mer, a junior, assisted in drawing attention to his performance as well as that of the team. He finished the season with a . 442 average and led Division III with 68 hits. Robin Knight, a junior who plays short¬ stop, also had an outstanding season. With a total of 48 runs batted in, he led the team in that feat for the second year in a row. As both offense and defense player, catcher Bryan Perry, a junior, was a solid asset to the team. Batting strength also came off the bat of sophomore third baseman Dave Funk as well as that of Joe Frisbee, who is the only graduating senior on the team. Frisbee and Robin Knight tied for the team homerun lead with seven each. On the mound the game rested securely with the skills of Brian Brushe. Brushe finished the season with a 12-2 record, a 3. 09 earned run average. Wyatt Kerley ' s season record was 7-3. He finished with a 2. 45 ERA for 48 strikeouts and 44 walks. In his first season with the Sea Gulls, Doug Harvey, a junior, finished at 6-3, with a 4.30 ERA based on his 34 strikeouts and only allowing 22 walks. First Row: J. Waldorf, D. Funk, R. Knight, B. By the end of season play, the Gulls record was 9-5, and the team was ranked eighth in the USILA College Division poll. A disappointing first-round loss to the Univ. of Baltimore in the NCAA Col¬ lege Division playoffs ended what had been an excellent season for many of the players. Dave Cottle, a senior, was named a first team all-American player for the second year in a row because of his performance as one of the top scor¬ ing lacrosse players in the nation. He scored 93 points with 59 goals and 34 assists this season. Cottle, who played from the position of attackman, middie Mark Hoffman, and defenseman Scott Lathrom were named to the Mason-Dixon Conference lacrosse team. Most Valuable player awards were given by the team to Cottle (for the sec¬ ond time) and Dave Hearn. Hearn has been recognized as one of the top goalies in the nation, recording 249 saves and allowing only 109 goals in 12 games. First Row: W. C-arrow, J. Peters, D. Temple, D. Cottle (Co-Captain) L. Tawes (Coach) This was Coach Sharon Tawes first year with the wom¬ an ' s lacrosse team, and it turned out to be a very suc¬ cessful one. The She Gulls finished their season with a 7-5-1 record and a consolation championship in the Maryland State Woman ' s Lacrosse Association Tourna¬ ment. This was a vast improve¬ ment over their disappointing 1-9-1 record in 1976. Scoring 28 goals and three assists made Anita Gruss, a junior the leading attack player, and contributed to her receiv¬ ing the team ' s most valuable player award. Another key scorer was Rocky Struble, a graduating senior who has been on the team for four years. Struble ended her career as a lacrosse play¬ er at Salisbury State with 25 goals and one assist for the season. Mary Wilson was able to land 16 goals and one assist dur¬ ing season play from her posi¬ tion at left wing. Peggy Trio- ano, Terri Readmond, and sen¬ ior Patti Leap all consistently scored goals for the She Gulls. Elaine Robertson, another grad¬ uating senior, also provided scoring assistance throughout the team ' s matched from her position at home. Defensively the She Gulls were in control of their oppo¬ nents. Karen Suhorsky, the team ' s goalie, recorded 168 saves in 13 games. Suhorsky had plenty of support from cen¬ ter point Nancy McKittrick, a junior, as well as from Minica Ditzel, Dawn McCrumb, Jackie Sandlof, Kathy Thess, and Pat Y oung, who is also a gradua¬ ting senior. A junior varsity team was added this year for the first time. The B team was coached by Debbie Bloodsworth, who was a recipient of the most valuable player award when she played for the She Gulls. The B team players ended their season with a 2-4-1 record. 113 114 Track And Field Team Places Fourth Over-All In Mason-Dixon Conference Championship At the Mason-Dixon Conference Champion¬ ship Meet, the Sea Gulls track and field team es¬ tablished new individual and team records, while placing fourth over-all in the meet. Coach Lloyd Sigler explained the outstanding performances by saying that the team members had been working hard all season in preparation for this meet. Buddy Hedges equalled the SSC record in pole vaulting of 14 ft. to win a first place in that event. The 3,000 meter steeplechase provided an opportunity for both Paul Fenton, a junior, and graduating senior Paul Dawson to beat the old SSC record of 10:09. 5. Dawson ran the course in 9:44.4 to capture second place in the event, while Fenton come in third with a time of 10:05.4. A new mile-run record of 4:31. 5 was set by Roger West. The performance earned West a sixth place in the conference championships. Freshman Bob Cannon also established a new record for Salisbury State. In the 440 yard dash he was clocked at 49. 4, which is two-tenths of a second better than the previous record. Cannon finished second in the event. Craig Davis, a graduating senior, ran the best qualifying time and also a personal best time in the 880 yard run. Davis set a new school rec¬ ord in that event by running it in only 1:58. 9 and finished in sixth place. In the 220 yard dash freshman Terry Swann came in third with a time of 22. 5, which was also a personal best time for Swann. He com¬ peted again--this time in the long jump--and finished fifth with a 21 ft. 2 in. personal best jump. Swann also finished second with a time of 9. 5 seconds in his heat in the 100 yard dash. Dean Powell, a sophomore, qualified for two finals despite being handicapped by rain. He was clocked with the fastest qualifying time in the 440 yard intermediate hurdles with a 57. 5. In the 120 yard high hurdles, Powell finished in 15. 2 seconds to give him the second fastest qualify¬ ing time in that event. A third place finish in shot put for freshman Jim Foster gave SSC a new record in that event of 43 feet 10 1 4 inches. Other team members also placed in their events during the championship meet including Ed Hoeck, who took sixth place in the javelin toss, and Peter Pratt a runner-up in the discus competition. Wray Cannaday, a gradu¬ ating senior, won an indivi¬ dual title for SSC in the con¬ ference championship, but he was eliminated in the first round of the Division III na¬ tionals. Cannaday ' s record prior to the championships was 11-3. He also managed a 9-4 doubles record with Larry Knopf, a sophomore who was the Gulls ' no. 1 player this season. In the no. 2 spot this season with a 10-4 record for the Sea Gulls was junior Chris Thomas. Team captain Bill Hyle played at no. 3 this season, and he finished with a 17-5.
