2 I Orientation Begins College Year. Anyone who has survived the first few days of school can look backward and see nothing but frustration and lines. Lines of groggy students meeting early registration appointments, and lines of frustrated people waiting to pull class cards. Lines of textbooks to be taken home and opened periodically through the semester. Athletic Program Expands At S.S.C. The established system was in full operation; text opened, professors throughly explained difficult concepts, and students searched for a valid purpose in such instruction. 14 15 On a hot Commencement day, each Salisbury State senior was filled with a combination of anticipation, excitement, and satisfaction. Re¬ ceiving their hard earned diplomas, they looked forward eagerly to the future era in their lives. 17 If this room is untidy, we want to hear about it.. - —0 18 19 honors 24-25 sports -42-43 organizations 70-71 elasses — 90-91 fresh. — 92 soph. 108 jr. 122 sr. — 132 administration — 156-157 editor’s note 180 The dedication of the 1970 Evergreen is to a man who has exhibited, through the years, a sincere interest in the progress of Salisbury State College. The final record of 7—2—3 included 36 goals as compared to 13 goals for the opponents. The team saw a balanced attack with Andy Hall, Tony Redman and Dale Pusey leading in the scoring department. On defense, Rich Jenkins once again turned in another outstanding year. Also notable on defense were Jim Webster and freshman Norm Laramore as well as goalies Dan ny Long and Terry Gibbons. With the majority of the starting lineup returning next year, hopes are high to continue in the tradition of Champions. Danny Long, Terry Gibbons, Steve Tull, Bud Elzey. BASKETBALL IMPROVES Salisbury’s basketball team got off to a shaky start but came back at the end of the season to win 5 of their last 6 games. The year’s record of 8-14 does little justice to a hard-fighting team who in several games lost by only one or two baskets. The highlight of the year was a come-from-behind victory over Coppin State in overtime after a last-second basket by Jim Marshall tied the score after regulation time. Although it is difficult to pick out for recognition any individual players on this well-rounded team noteworthy is the com¬ mendation of Jim Marshall by the District Commission and the breaking of 1000 points by Pat Conway. Even though Pat Conway and Paul Parks will graduate the remainder of the team should provide a winning season next year. Sports -48 LEFT: Captain Paul Parks scores again. CREATED This was the first year for a Junior Varsity basketball team at SSC. Under the coaching of Mr. Jerry Smith, a teacher at Laurel High School, the team finished the season with a 6-4 record. Freshmen Rick Brandon and Bob Cameron were co-captains. The most promising players include Max Cottman, John Krashoc, and Rick Brandon. It was an exciting season for the team, but the last game seemed to be the most important; after having lost their first game with Lincoln University by three points in overtime, our J.V. came back to defeat Lincoln 104—83 and therefore have a winning season. Sports - 52 OUR BEST YET • • • The baseball team extended its string of winning seasons again this year with a 15-8 record. The team showed a fine team batting average of .297 and fielding average of .917. Individual leaders included Rich Rich Jenkins batting .425 followed by Jim Marshall’s .410, Bud Elzey’s .408, Phil Taylor’s .342, Andy Hall’s .333, and Steve Gordon’s .309. Jenkins also had the best pitching record with 4-1. He was followed by Pat Conway’s 3-4 and freshman Ben Gregg’s 2-0. With most of the starting team returning next year and with good bench strength, prospects look good for another winning season. TOP: Tom slams one. CENTER LEFT: Don chugs home. Sports -56 TRACK SETS RECORDS The track team completed its first year of varsity competition with a 2—7 record. Although a young team, it broke all but two of the school records. The most outstanding members of the team were freshmen Randy Brummitt and Max Cottman. Brummitt led the scoring with 103 points, closely followed by Cottman. Brummitt set school records for the 440-yard dash, 120-yard high hurdles, and the 440 intermediate hurdles. He also ran a leg on the record-breaking mile relay team. Cottman set records in the long jump and the triple jump. Not to be forgotten is Paul Parks, a retiring senior, who holds the school record for the high jump and is tied for the pole vault. This is surely a team to watch next year. With one season und er its belt, the team should prove to be stiff competition for anyone. ROW 1: Bob Jones, Coach Volenik, Bruce Lloyd. Sports - 58 CREW EXPANDS The Salisbury State College Rowing Club had two crews participating in the 1970 inter-collegiate competition — an “Eight” crew and a “Four” crew. The “Eight” performed well in competition against much larger schools such as Georgetown University, St. Joseph’s College, East Carolina University, University of Tampa, Rollins College, and University of Virginia. The “Four” was outmatched by two Georgetown University crews, but by the end of the season it looked very promising for next year’s competition. According to Coach Volenik, the record of the Salisbury crews is even more impressive when comparing age and facilities. Almost all SSC opponents have new competition shells; while ours, though good, are older and often repaired. Likewise, our competition includes colleges and universities having up to 14 crews and 4 coaches, and most competitors have crews that have been together three years or more. INCREASED INTEREST IN GYMNASTICS More and more SSC students have become involved in gymnastics and have practiced it many hours each week. By exercising on the rings, the parallel bars, the horse, the trampoline and other gymnastic apparatus, the gymnasts try to improve their physical fitness and health by developing their balance, flexibility, strength, and endurance. Although on a club basis, the gymnastics team displays winning form and stamina. The SSC students greatly enjoyed the exercises that the club performed for basketball game intermission entertainment. Playing a schedule of 18 games dur¬ ing the 1969-70 field hockey season, Salisbury State amassed a record of 11 wins, six defeats, and one tie. The team, playing with a solid core of seniors, reeled off five straight victories to open the season before being stopped by the U. of Delaware. An almost air-tight de¬ fense limited the opposition to one or less goals in ten of the contests. The season was climaxed with a 2-1 verdict over arch-rival Towson State College. Jeanne Stewart, se¬ nior guard, recovered from early season leg injuries to be voted the team’s Most Valu¬ able Player, as well as, being named to the All-State Team with senior center, Mary Lou Manis. For you it will be remembered as the year you graduated, took a new position, entered the military service or graduate school, or, perhaps, married the boy or girl of your dreams. For me it will be remembered also as the year I left Salisbury State College and began an entirely new challenge. No doubt what has happened here will influence our lives. The college experience is surely meant to do so. The Faculty and Staff will follow your careers with good wishes and great expectations. I shall cherish my memories of the good years with you and shall take a very personal pride in your future accomplishments. Walter D. Smith President Orem E. The challenge is to arrange pictures and copy in a layout that is unified in content and artistic in presentation. As Salisbury State has grown and developed during these three years, so has the Evergreen reflecting the efforts of the editors to design a publication as unique as the school year captured on its pages. To re-create this year in black and white has required hours of scheduling, typ¬ ing, and designing. The reward is a feeling of pride and accomplishment that will be re¬ newed for a lifetime. MR.
