SSC offers its students media for expression and exchange oi ideas. Salisbury State College has a long tradition of excellence in the field of higher education. Evidence of such excellence may be found in the energy, drive, and achievements of the S.S.C. Graduate. The process of developing into a mature, educated individual is an arduous one. The S.S.C. college community is only one component of an individual’s development and maturity. For the graduate must then take with him what he has gained here and expand upon its basis in order to face reality. The classroom provides the foundation of an education. The professors add the direction to inquisitive minds. It is from this blending process that the student makes gains toward his attainment of excellence. The team entered the N.I.A.A. Championships and defeated powerful New York Tech behind a 2-0 shutout by Phil Briggs, but were knocked off by Millersville 13-0. Included in the victories were two wins over Frostburg, and a no-hitter by Phil Briggs against Lincoln University. The batting leaders were Andy Hall .365, and Ray Shingler .348. Both Hall and Shingler shared the lead in R.B.I.’s with 13 apiece. The leading pitcher was Pat Conway with a 6-2 record followed by Phil Briggs’s 5-4 record. Coach Deane Deshon 40 OUR BEST YET. . . Early morning practice on the river. 42 The Salisbury State Crew team com¬ pleted its first complete season which included two victories for the 4 man crew against Washington College and some very close seconds for the 8 man crew. This year’s “four” crew members were Arrnond Heywood, Steve McCoy, Glen Smith, and John Smith. The “eight” was rowed by George Mason, Chris Smith, Bruce Lloyd, Mark Nolte, Mike Staley, Ed Mink, Nelson Outlen, and Steve Baker. With a new 8 man shell and two surplus eights and also contri¬ butions from local businessmen, Frank Schipperyn, the coach, and his budding team look for an even more successful season next fall. 4 man team on a cold morning. TENNIS This year marked the beginning of a tennis team. Though still on somewhat of a club basis, the team played two matches, opposing Wesley College and Towson State College. The team tied Wesley College 6-6 in a good match but were unable to top powerful Towson State and dropped the match 9-0 though this does little credit since each of the matches were closer than the score indicates. It is hoped that the next season will find the team on a varsity status with regularly scheduled matches. Coach Benn Maggs 45 TRA CK DEVELOPS A T SSC Terry drives ahead. GULLS 49 Athletic Associations MEN’S ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT VICE-PRESIDENT SECRETARY-TREASURER Ray Shingler Ron Gore James Kreuzburg The Men’s Athletic Association experienced its most successful year during 1968-69. The Gull’s soccer team started the school year off by winning the Delaware Valley Conference title. Phil Briggs and Ray Shingler co-captained the team, coached by Mr. Ben Maggs. Coach Deane Deshon’s basketball team finished its season with a 9-11 record for the most victories than had been scored in any previous season. Ron Gore retired after four seasons with nearly every Gull’s basketball record. After a slow start, the baseball team finished the season in a winning streak and capped the season by being invited to the district N.A.I.A. playoffs at Millersburg State College, Pennsylvania. Under Coach S. G. Tyler the track and field team maintained the winning atmosphere in their first full collegiate schedule. At the annual awards banquet of the M.A.A. junior Andy Hall became the first athlete in Salisbury’s history to letter in all four major sports. 50 The Women’s Athletic Association General Board Members. ' . , . .« .- wr? r «-r : ; 1 • ■■ 4 • ' A X 137 A Message from the President to the Class of 1969 Although I have known the Class of 1969 for only one year, its record permits me to speak confidently about its future. Its stay on campus has coincided with numerous changes associated with growth of the College. Not only has it weathered these changes well but it has also assisted in the implementation of new programs such as a student academic council, a new judicial board, an expanded athletic program, a revision of student regulations, and the introduction of new academic majors. Salisbury State College consists to a minor extent of its buildings and facilities but in a larger way of its faculty, its students, and its alumni. Your graduation and departure from the campus does not break the tie that binds you to this college. As an alumnus, your interest in and support of Salisbury State College will bring an added dimension to its stature, influence, and its potentiality for development as a state college offering a wide range of educational opportunities to all those who yearn for the fuller life available to educated men. Your college has not provided you with answers to all the problems life will offer; however, it has attempted to help you develop an analytical approach to be applied to the solution of those problems. It has encouraged you to take little for granted, to study, and to understand. And now it urges you to apply all your knowledge and skills to those lifelong tasks imposed by community responsibility, by citizenship and by your obligations as an educated man. Walter D. It is my hope that this edition, the 1969 Evergreen, has kept up with that idea in total, or at least in some small respect. To have a yearbook which is different each year doesn’t call for a complete change of staff members. True, it calls for new members and graduation of experienced members, but it calls for so much more. It requires that people have the desire to work and to stand by when the materials to work with are limited, and the times are trying. It calls for individuals to listen to the complaints of the editor and the constant reminding of deadlines and goals to be met. A publication like this calls for so much—many say they know that it does, very few realize that it does. This publication is also dependent upon the understanding and assistance of the advisors, the initiative of the publica¬ tions representative, and the cooperation of the entire stu¬ dent body. A publication of this nature must be all of this if it is to be a success. It is here that I have an opportunity to thank everyone who made this publication possible. I am appreciative of the assistance, time, ideas, and advice offered by Dean Volenik, our administrative advisor, and Dr. May, our staff consultant. Too, there is a tremendous amount of thanks owed to Mr. o w-x , „ r j. . , , c DEAN VOLENIK - ADVISOR Ray Mitchell lor his unending assistance in every phase ol this book. But most of all I want to thank each member of the staff, for without you S.S.C. could never have such a publication. To Charlene Squires, Susan Tull, Malissa Jack- son, Nancy Fykes, Dave Meenan, Gary Eskridge and Roger, Mason—the section editors—and June Spengler our business manager I am especially grateful for the extra time and effort you all gave so willingly. To everyone who made this possible I say thank-you. Believe me — it was appreciated.
