SALISBURY STATE COLLEGE SALISBURY. MARYLAND City Construction A COLLEGE AND C O M M U N I I T Y GROW Planning Today for a Better Tomorrow This newly adopted slogan of the city of Salisbury reflects the genuine interest in the fu¬ ture of both the community and of the college. As the new Student Union Building is con¬ structed, S.S.C. acquires new facilities for its expanding enrollment. ' Some Things Remain Unchanged in a Changing World. 5 Familiar Scenes in the Life of an SSC Student The park and campus in winter and the portico in fall are familiar sights to S.S.C. students, although seldom appreciated until captured by the eye of a camera. 7 . i, .Ml|]-| ■ ' ' : - r •WjdLf, l v t gn -C T mV vf f WffijkMJ I FOREWORD A college does not exist as an entity; it is an integral part of the community. The city of Sal¬ isbury and the College are expanding in size and facilities. New buildings are being con¬ structed and new personalities are being drawn by the increasing opportunities to the city and to the suburbs. This year’s increased enrollment and addition of new faculty members are sig¬ nificant proof of the expansion of our College. There has been increasing exchange between the College and the community. The College offers to the community cultural programs of symphony concerts, chorus, and dramatic pro¬ ductions, art exhibits, and outstanding lectures by well-known personalities. It also distributes clothes and toys to the needy children at Christ¬ mas time. The merchants of Salisbury provide many services for the students in return for their patronage. The community park is a beau¬ ty spot enjoyed by all and Canal Park has pro¬ vided a pleasant setting for many enjoyable picnics. This growth of the College and the communi¬ ty is reflected in the 1966 Evergreen. v Mv«r A variety of activities are pursued by S.S.C. students in the time remaining after the completion of their aca¬ demic responsibilities. 10 SSC Students Grow Socially as Well as Academically. Members of a record-breaking Freshman Class, the largest enrollment in S.S.C’s history, take a break in their busy day to get acquainted with new friends. r W? 11 HffiM A DM IN IS TRA TION Dr. Wilbur Devilbiss, President 14 Message From the President Mrs. Rosalie Griffith Secretary to the President Message to Graduates To each member of the graduating class I extend best wishes for much success in your chosen profession or vocation. It is my hope that during the time you have spent in this College you have found the opportunity to stretch the range of “eye” and “ear” to the eternal miracle of life with its limitless possibilities. Education does not end with a degree or diploma. An attitude toward learning that I hope each has developed must be carried into life after graduation. The demands of our rapidly changing society for knowledge, intellectual skills and quality performance can never be satisfied by what can be compressed into four years of formal college work. Rather, education is coterminous with life itself. If you have had your appetite whetted for further learning and have achieved that measure of self-discipline which leads to self-education, then you have received a head start toward a successful and satisfying life. This includes not only items of social interest but also academic and cultural matters that involve the students as a whole. This orga¬ nization acts as a liaison between the faculty admin¬ istration and students to provide a means of better coordination and cooperation among all three. While the S.G.A. is the students the Board is the representative of these students and acts on their rec¬ ommendation and i nterests. The S.G.A. becomes fully realized and hence a really worthwhile organization when the students make use of it. The S.G.A. besides providing social activities throughout the year is the only organization on cam¬ pus which deals with the major problems affecting the majority of the students. One by one, the freshmen arrive, register in their respective dorms, and begin to unpack and meet new friends. Ex¬ citement is in the air. Meanwhile, the concerned upper¬ classmen offer their assistance, dutifully, thinking only of helping the freshmen adjust to college life. To meet this end, the upperclassmen plan a whirlwind of activities and — “fitness programs.” The freshmen begin the week — nose to the ground — with exercises, disaster prepara¬ tions, receptions, dances, and other organized fun. Obedi¬ ence and respect are instilled in the freshmen. All too soon the week is over, bells ring and classes begin. 92 Canal 94 95 Homecoming DORM-DA Y FOOTBALL GAME OPEN HO USE Prior to Thanksgiving, the Men’s Dormitory Association and the Women’s Dormitory Associ¬ ation combine their talents to sponsor “Open House.” The W.D.A. is noted for their “spectacu¬ lars,” with each hall or room, decorated in de¬ picting a chosen theme. The M.D.A., while not noted for their diversity in decor, compensate with an abundance of refreshments. All in all, the time spent during “Open House” is enjoyable to say the least.
