Co-editors Sara Nichols Carolyn Young “ ‘Tis education forms the common mind: Just as the twig is bent the tree’s inclined.” Alexander Pope. Foreword This 1963 EVERGREEN is meant for your enjoyment now and in years to come. Its value will increase with the passage of time, for it will serve to bring back fond memories of our vi¬ brant college days. “Autumn, the fairest season of the year.” Ovid. The tower at STC greets the freshmen as they enter. Freshman Wayne Dryden shows his parents through the library. Parents are introduced to the Snack Bar. Parents and freshmen get their first look at the new gym¬ nasium. 4 Square dancing is part of the fun of Orientation Week. Our new students find that fun and frolic is intermingled with harder work. 5 The freshmen meet with the rest of the student body at the All-College Assembly. On the more formal side is the freshman reception. This is the first of a series of receptions continuing through the senior year. This will be the students’ intellectual home for the next four years. 6 The picnic at Canal Park brings the student body together. 7 It’s orientation week for the freshmen, and beanie time once again. Incoming students encounter the first of many lines in registration. Social Director, Mrs. A. L. Fleming, gives orientation instruction. Winter conies to rule the varied “See, year.” Janies Thomson Campus School choir and College Chorus join in singing Christmas carols. Christmas lights brighten up the campus. Even in barren winter the tower still looks enchanting. Last year the evergreen wore a natural cloak of white. 8 Santa Claus gives out toys for the needy children. The main hall is dressed for Christmas. Many students were not able to get through the drifts. Gay lights blink a Merry Christ¬ mas to passers-by. Snow! That means snowball fights! The new gym looks bleak from the tower. Judy and Cynthia help trim the Christmas tree. i , “These blessed candles of the night.” Shakespeare The boys decorate their dorm for the Christmas season. 10 Winter nights are conducive for work in the library. Snow blankets the STC campus. ceremony. 11 “There is no time like Spring, When Life ' s alive, alive in everything. Christina Rosetti Spring comes to the campus. , Tiwin «twif ■vf j mm. xaBkr k • § ! a j ■ s gw 10M P 1 ■ Many students find recreation on the newly outfitted tennis courts. In the spring a young man ' s fancy turns to softball. 12 The traditional winding of the Maypole entertains the Queen and her Court. 13 Polyvetsian dancers practice for the chorus ' s annual spring con¬ cert. Governor Tillard Flawes dedicates the new gym. 14 Miss Addis tells the Mayhem audience about a future STC. Smile! You’re on Candid Camera. A view from the water tower gives one a unique perspective. 15 The beach attracts Dr. and Mrs. Wroten. a Dr. May gets his summer recreation playing softball. . . . in the golden days of the beauti¬ ful early summer weather . . . Thomas Noel The outdoors are full of poetical inspiration for Dr. Elderdice. Not only students enjoy picnics. 16 mm We want you to feel that this College is your College and want you to be proud to be a part of it.
