STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE THE EVERGREEN, 196 FOREWORD A college yearbook is always much more than a book of pictures. It is a memento, a keepsake, a vehicle for reminiscing; it stops the clock for a year and captures for all time certain outstanding mo¬ ments. It is with these things in mind that we have compiled the present Evergreen—a record of hard work and midnight oil, of parties and coffee breaks and happy fun-filled hours, of rich tradition and of progress and success. It is with special pride that we note this year the expansion of the curriculum to include the training of teachers for Senior high school as well as for Junior high and elementary school. These are memories of love—of pride in our Alma Mater which we hope this book conveys to you—memories known only to those who have ex¬ perienced life at S.T.C. 2 CONTENTS ADMINISTRATION CLASSES SENIORS - JUNIORS - SOPHS - FRESHMEN ORGANIZATIONS S.G.A. - FINE ARTS - PUBLICATIONS - RELIGIOUS GROUPS - SPECIAL INTERESTS ACTIVITIES CAMPUS LEADERS - CAMPUS LIFE - GENERAL ACTIVITIES ATHLETICS SEASONAL SPORTS - INTRAMURALS - GYM TEAMS STAFF Mary Anna Lake and Sylvia Stant— Co-editors Luke Fennell— Business Manager Bob Taylor— Art Editor Associate Editors Julie Spedden Barbara Mosebrook Mary Ann Clark Barbara Crum Brenda Foxwell Doris Madron— Photograph j Editor Dick Taylor— Sports Editor Photographers Betty Quimby Les Milbourne Jim Little Dr. John B. This year, 1960-1961, has wit¬ nessed many events, new developments, and outstanding changes in STC. The curri culum has broadened so as to make this college a liberal arts school as well as a teachers’ college. The teacher training program has been widened to include training for senior high school teachers as well as elementary and Jr. high teachers. The college faculty has seen the addition of three new members. Also one new mem¬ ber was added to the Campus School faculty, and a new member was secured as re¬ placement for Dr. Thomas, who retired in I960. A Dean of Students was added to the Administrative staff. In the plant itself, change took the form of a new gymnasium and the erection of a beautiful new home for the President. With the residents of the Men’s Dorm taking the lead, the round of social activities at STC spiralled outward to envelope nearly all phases of college life. This year witnessed the creation of a new service organization, Circle K; also, there has been a heightening of club activities of all sorts. The traditional college events have blossomed under enthusiastic leadership and renewed interest. In this book, we have endeavored to record some of the most significant and mem¬ orable of these events. We take immense pride in our college, in the people we have known here, and in the memories associated with them. We hope that, in this book, we have radiated some of this pride and love to you. We, the editors, would like to take this opportunity to thank all those people who have helped make this publication possible. Our special gratitude is extended to Dr. May, who has diligently struggled with us to edit copy and meet deadlines, and to Mr. Maggs, whose advice and help have made such fine photography available. To an extremely capable and cooperative staff, without whose help none of this could have been accom¬ plished, we also wish to express sincere thanks. Finally, we are deeply indebted to you, the college community, whose support and encouragement have helped us weather so many trying” (to say the least) storms. We hope you like this 1961 edition of the Evergreen. Sincerely, Sylvia D.
