THE PRESIDENT ' S MESSAGE TO THE GRADUATES You are leaving the college as a representative of the teaching pro¬ fession at a time when the eyes of all people are centered on education, education for all the people, as the hope of the world in these unsettled times. Every teacher is challenged to improve the educational programs in our schools and lift the quality of teaching. This has always been the job of the teacher but it is of greater urgency today than at any other time in our history. Four years in college is a short time in which to prepare for a profes¬ sion so important to the quality of living of all people. But it is a begin¬ ning—a beginning that has developed in each an awareness of how much there is to learn and an inquisitiveness that will lead each to broaden and expand his areas of knowledge. To know how little you know and move to do something about it is one mark of a maturing mind and a step toward becoming really educated. It is my hope that the foundation you have laid will be strong enough to support you as you meet the exacting tests of the members of your profession and of the people in general. The breadth of your knowledge in the several academic disciplines, your skill in using what you know, your sense of values, your ability and willingness to do critical and in¬ dependent thinking, your capacity for a feeling of humaneness toward others, these and many other things are a part of that foundation. May the structure of your life built upon so sturdy a foundation be satisfying and rewarding to you and an inspiration to others.
