Salisbury College, School of gracious beauty, Thy portals stand an open door Through which we enter lives of deeper wisdom, O we shall love thy name forevermore. DEDK Dr. Jessie L. Fleming VTION As time goes by, we shall cherish the memory of one personality as part of our college life. With a warmth and sincerity, she spoke to us through the art and language of music. Her untiring efforts and ivill- ingness to help were tinged with a knowledge of high ideals. Beyond every cloud of doubt, fear, or disap¬ pointment was a broad smile, radiated with courage to look for the silver lining. With admiration, we, the class, dedicate the 1956 Ever green to Ur. Jessie L. Fleming, a teacher, guide, and friend who will live forever in our hearts. Symbolizing life itself, the Evergreen shall endeavor to unfold one year of life at S.T.C. The staff wishes to keep anew the memories of a year never to be lost. It is with this hope, we present to you the 1956 Evergreen. ADMINISTRATION CLASSES ORGANIZATIONS ATHLETICS FEATURES SPONSORS 13 v : v : .v ; ■ v: Dr. Wilbur Devilbiss, President B.A., M.A., Ed.D. A ss THE PRESIDENT ' S MESSAGE TO THE GRADUATES You are leaving the college as a representative of the teaching pro¬ fession at a time when the eyes of all people are centered on education, education for all the people, as the hope of the world in these unsettled times. Every teacher is challenged to improve the educational programs in our schools and lift the quality of teaching. This has always been the job of the teacher but it is of greater urgency today than at any other time in our history. Four years in college is a short time in which to prepare for a profes¬ sion so important to the quality of living of all people. But it is a begin¬ ning—a beginning that has developed in each an awareness of how much there is to learn and an inquisitiveness that will lead each to broaden and expand his areas of knowledge. To know how little you know and move to do something about it is one mark of a maturing mind and a step toward becoming really educated. It is my hope that the foundation you have laid will be strong enough to support you as you meet the exacting tests of the members of your profession and of the people in general. The breadth of your knowledge in the several academic disciplines, your skill in using what you know, your sense of values, your ability and willingness to do critical and in¬ dependent thinking, your capacity for a feeling of humaneness toward others, these and many other things are a part of that foundation. May the structure of your life built upon so sturdy a foundation be satisfying and rewarding to you and an inspiration to others. DR. HOWARD E. BOSLEY Dean of Instruction DR. It was begun last year by a group of en¬ thusiastic freshmen interested in the sport. Although only one game was scheduled, S.T.C. won by defeating King ' s College with a score of 8-1. The 1955 season was opened with S.T.C. having five games scheduled. The team was to play Towson, St. Marys, Villa Julie, Notre Dame, and Western Maryland. Due tc cold weather, only three games were played. Left to right: Louise Holbrook, Jacqueline Richardson, Joanne Cathell, Frances Wersten, Peggy Ross, Carole Kirkwood, Sally Dawson, Coach Whitney. The 1955 season proved to show a lot of promising material for developing a top notch team of S.T.C. Ina Ray Calloway and Helen Luzetsky served as very capable co-captains. If there is continued interest of the freshmen and sophomores, S.T.C. may look for a promising 1956 hockey season. y IP gW-, - J® ; ’ v h - Ij ■N ajjftjl ft jpO T • f j ‘ IS ■ m m ti 1 jjj| jkK u TO. i | tf IL Jf ' I f J jbm JBg f |f | JpuBl Third row, left to right: Coach Whitney, Jacqueline Richardson, Ruth Neilson, Gertrude Younger, Jeanne Skinner, Elaine Brinsfield, Isabelle Brown. VARSITY VOLLEYBALL A sport which has gained.considerable prominence and popularity at S.T.C. in the past few years is volleyball. This year our men found themselves in a local league where the quality of competition has made for some close and exciting games. Sparked by Corner, our team has piled up a most impressive string of victories. Through their excellent play our men find themselves in the midst of a championship game against Chincoteague at the moment this is being written. 162 Back row, left to right: Arthur Ellis, Tom Comer, Grayson Hurley, John Shaheen, Don Smith, and Coach Maggs. Front row: Ronnie O ' Brien, George Mills, Phillip Slacum, John Mavromatis, and Dick Marshall. VARSITY BASKETBALL This year the Maggsmen wound up with a rather unsuccessful season as com¬ pared with our usual showing. With the welcome addition of Grayson Hurley, a freshman from Cam bridge, and the return of Doc Volmer, we were antici¬ pating a fine season. Our spirits were dampened however, by several high scor¬ ing losses to opposing competition. As usual, our stellar forward, Roland Foskey, sparked the team effort. Against Wesley he tossed 30 points in, but it was not enough to overcome the final 90-81 loss. Toward the end of the season we lost Muir, Volmer and Foskey; this did not help the team ' s morale. The loss placed on our team the extra burden which made itself evident in the remaining ball games. 163 RECEPTION for Dr. and Mrs. Devilbiss ' 1 ■ ■ ' On October 7, 1955, the State Teachers College faculty gave a reception in honor of our new president and his wife to introduce them to the city of Salis¬ bury. Guests, who were some of Salisbury ' s leading citizens, were received by Dr. and Mrs. Howard E. Bosley, the official college hosts. Among those present were Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Framptom, representing the State Board of Education, and Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Boston from the State Department of Education. Refresh¬ ments were served and the reception drew to a close after Dr. and Mrs. Devilbiss and the faculty had greeted their guests. 166 HOMECOMING Table for the Guests of Honor ffl} 4 1 m f’Lt v t 1 1 ' J A Alumni and Faculty enjoy dinner together 167 HARVEST DANCE « • c : ' ; 1 ' h icjijjj BEp ; .-Vi I.T ■ ' .WZ ' I « D BMV •« ■ In warn v v ' HWA ' V ' tA r j.V ' . The Harvest Court consisted of Ardis Hoener, Cecil Bradshaw, Jean Fitzgerald, Sue Nock, and Mozelle Pardew. 169 Arsenic and Old Lace JANUARY T Crooning and Spooning in Federalsburg The traditional Candlelighting Service was held in the Social Room on December 15 as the last event before the Christmas holidays. Miss Ruth Powell, former dietician and social director who served in her capacity for over twenty years and endeared herself to the stu¬ dents of S.T.C., lighted the large candle. The program was opened by the College Chorus who led the procession. The Candlelighting Service has become an integral part of S.T.C., having been held each year since the college ' s beginning in 1925. It began as an occasion when the entire col¬ lege, students, and faculty shared the joys of The Quie Christmas by presenting gifts to a representa¬ tive of the Welfare Board of Wicomico County. In the history of S.T.C. and the Candlelight¬ ing Service, there have been two of the huge center candles from which students light their tapers. The second one is presently being used. This year the service was planned by the organizations representing the largest number of students, namely Women ' s Dormitory As¬ sociation, Women ' s Day Association, Men ' s Dormitory Association, and Men ' s Day Associa¬ tion. ¥alks What next? ' on the fourth day of September, My doors for another year to remember— were flung open. I wakened from a drowsy sleep, then crouched for a leap— into another year. At once I loved that Freshman Class, each sturdy lad and pretty lass— proud of their title. They shied at courses for the years to come, but never shall it be said that one— was unwilling to try. Soon it was found that things to be done were best accomplished by everyone— so it was. They did not expect honors, if so, very few because after all they were very new— their year would come. Another summer then did pass, they came to me as the Sophomore Class— eager and willing. Now they felt, since older they ' d grown, a few of their champions could be shown— and they brought them forth. In every sport which I might name, they did their part to bring me fame— they made me proud. As on the second year they drew the curtain, within my soul I felt quite certain— the best was yet to come. That summer seemed unusually long, but as usual I welcomed the happy throng— this year, Juniors. My admiration for them grew each day as, struggling they made their way— toward the top. In each reach for success they took a part, eager to show that in their hearts— they loved me. Their Junior year saw much success, but the future held a greater test— as Seniors. This year was the best of them all, the year I shall always recall— as their greatest. They decided above all they ' d risk; they ' d make their class of 56 ' ’ — one to remember. The Senior year was filled with work and fun; there was an important task for everyone— just for the taking. I’ve told this story of their last four years, so you may understand their parting tears— they ' ll shed at graduation. Now they are gone to glory and fame, a wonderful credit to my name— Salisbury State Teachers. THESE In the year ! OoO ; LOOK FOR THE SILVER LINING Look for the silver lining, Whene ' er a cloud appears in the blue; Remember somewhere the sun is shining And so the right thing to do is make it shine lor you. A heart full of joy and gladness Will always vanish sadness and strife, So always look for the silver lining And try to find the sunny side of life.
