Hi §g|i «B AS TOE on OF VACATION ’Twas the day of vacation and all through STC Not a student was listening, not even me, The papers and books were slung on the floor, In fear that the period would be a bore. The idiots were nestled all filled with good cheer, While old Andy Pandy had her last glass of beer. With her head in an ice bag and mine in a cap, Had just settled down for a fourth period nap, When out in the hall there arose such a clatter, I sprang from seat to see what was the matter. Away to the door I flew like a flash Fell over the desk with a staggering crash. The equipment on the top of the instructor’s desk, Gave the vision of Old Smokey at it’s very best, When what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a white -haired man holding a cold glass of beer. And a pair of binoculars to see what was to be, I knew in a moment that it must be J. D. More rapid than eagles, his faculty they came And he whistled and shouted and called them by name: “Now Lucy, now Doodles, now Gebby and A. L. On, Taterhead, on Henrietta, on Jessie and Idabelle, To the top of the tower, to the end of the hall, Now dash away, dash away, get busy, you all!’’ As dry leaves that before the wild huricane fly, When they do, they must meet the challenge or die. So up to the classrooms the faculty they flew, With their arms full of books and J. D., too ! 86 And, then in a twinkling, I heard in the hall, The voice of Uncle Howard as he began to bawl. As I drew in my head and was turning around In the window came T. J. with a crash and a bound. He was dressed all in rags, from his head to his foot, And his clothes were all tarnished with cigarette soot, A bundle of units he had flung on his back And he looked like a superviser just blowing his stack! His eyes, how they glared! His wrinkles, so drawn! His cheeks were all hollow, and his voice almost gone His tight little mouth was drawn up like a bow, And the beard on his chin had just started to grow, The stump of a cigarette, he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath; His face was so stern; he looked so mad We thought for a moment things looked bad. He was jolly and plump, a right funny old clown We thought for a while he’d been doing the town! A pad full of notes and a shake of his head, Soon gave me to know, I had something to dread. He spoke not a word, but went straight to Jim Focht And the whole thing began to look like a joke. And laying his hand on his aching head, He jumped out the window and headed for bed. He sprang in his DeSoto, from the seniors he fled, If the truth would be known, he had nothing to dread; But I heard him mutter ere he drove out of sight: “You student teachers be good, and play flinch tonight!” As the Christmas season neared, the spirit of the holiday prevailed at S. T. C. The students decided ’twas time for a change And soon put the faculty on the firing range. As ruler of this fair domain Was DR. ULYSSES S. CUSTIS by name. His job was to uproot the trees And speak on the birds and the bees. His able assistant in this A man who was full of much bliss, Another redhead was he DEAN CURLEY YOUNGER ’twould be. To help them uproot the trees And roam with a set of keys FREDERICKA WOOD could be seen In men’s dorm and mezzanine. JOHN ADAMS MORAN ’twas said Made,all the students drop dead. His challenge too great to meet Made core too much a feat. TEDDY WEDDY BOWDLE danced And around her camera pranced. The tune of Ole Smokey was played As she led the book parade. TWEEDIE BIRD SMITH could be heard Singing her tunes to the birds. 10:30 was the deadline now And through the hall she would prowl. HENRIETTA HATTIE’S fame From her little favors came, In her little Chevrolet To the Home she went each day. JESSIE JOHNSON’S Pilgrim shoes Tapped out the tune of blues. Bach and List were soon forgot When they learned the new fox trot. From the crowd there came a roar PATSY WHITNEY took the floor. In her gym suit white and short, She got whistles from the court. Imagine my head the sun And around me the stars run: DOODLES DRYDEN tells his classes As he flirts with all the lasses. 1 52 Trousers held up by a rope Ears still filled up with soap MACCURDY CARL in Chinese Gives all the pupils the D’S. IDA BELLE STOOPS plans a tour To visit the Southern shore. The crabs and the oysters there Really gave her a big scare. TATERHEAD BRADLEY in lab Embarrassed the girls so bad TaLes of the Army and sex Made all the boys stretch their necks. A. L. WEANIE shot the bull ’til the room was almost full, But he helped the students learn Democracy is their concern. When it comes to higher math FRANKIE MARSHALL heads the staff In her class she’s an attraction But she always knows a fraction. For practical purposes KENNY R. CAHALL sez, ‘Your world map is the key To learn all geography. Making all his evening rounds With his stick POP HASTINGS pounds. Spreading the glad word he likes As he goes on his nitely hikes. In her tight skirts and flying capes FRANCES WEBSTER strongly debates. Her only wish is to be proper And can she come up with some whoppers. Peanut butter and salt crackers Still have lots of backers. As LIL FORSYTHE puts out the dishes But doesn’t stick to student wishes. Merci beaucoup, mademoiselle MONSIEUR DENSTON says well. He has been given a citation And now written his dissertation. A Chem major was JIMMY GLENN WOOTON He did all the things they said he couldn’t With quantities of mixtures in a bowl He makes the lab shake, rattle and roll. MAE TRUITT CURTIS got lost one day But he was found behind the book display. He thought he heard Moby Dick, But it was only the clock’s tick. PEGGY RICHARDS will learn soon She can’t replace “Hung the Moon’’ Back to P.A. she will chase And leave Peg Martin in her place. In her little red dress BERNIE YOUNG is at her best, Charts and pictures on the wall No wonder class is in the hall.
