AIMS OF THE SCHOOL m HAT is a normal school? What is its place in the social order? In parti¬ cular, what valid reason for existence has this Eastern Shore institution, and what is there distinctive about our school? It is easy to say that a normal school aims to prepare teachers for service in elementary schools, but this is not all. There should be something in and about every school which stamps it as different from others of its kind. Schools, like individuals, should possess an i ndividuality all their own. A normal school is no exception. While the training schools of a State educa¬ tional system must of necessity prepare their students for similar duties as teachers, and hence can not vary widely in their curriculums or their methods of attaining these common goals, yet there are many wholly legitimate means of expressing a wholesome and attractive individuality. The Salisbury Normal School, with no untoward traditions to hamper it, set out from the beginning to establish, within proper and approved limits, an organization that would prepare its graduates to meet courageously and satisfactorily whatever situations in school life might confront them; a regimen of work and living that would contribute most effectively to the health, happi¬ ness, and comfort of the students; and a school spirit that would charm and inspire all who came within the sphere of its beneficient influence. How well these aims have been realized in the six years that we have endeavored to serve the educational interests of the State can best be attested by those who have lived and worked here, and by critical observers who by personal contacts with the school have been enabled to form unbiased judg¬ ments concerning our contribution to recent educational progress in Maryland.
