DEDICATION Because of ideals already established, achievements already won, prophecies fulfilled, and opportunities presented to you for the future, we dedicate this book to you, the Salisbury Normal School of T omorrow. 2 TS c nS ' V L a. £ 72 FOREWORD To you, fellow students, we present this 1931 Evergreen. May it recall and keep alive th e sacred traditions of a glorious past, and ever remind you of the challeng ' e of a still greater future. If, in later years, when memories have dimmed, it helps you to live again the days at dear S. N. S., the joy of service will have been ours. 0 VIEWS FACULTY SENIORS JUNIORS ORGANIZATIONS ATHLETICS ACTIVITIES THEME F we work upon marble, it will perish; if we work upon brass, time will efface it; if we rear temples, they will crumble into dust; but if we work upon immortal minds and imbue them with principles and with a just fear of God and love of their fellowmen, we engrave on those tablets something that will brighten to all eternity.” Time has always wrought its destructive forces upon the temples builded by man. But from within those temples, many long since crumbled into dust, has come forth eternal things,- knowledge, culture, art, character; the makings of a man. In all this work may we play a necessary and noble part—- the part of trained, efficient, and consecrated artisans. We may not accomplish all that we aspire to do, but we have the joy of achievement, and of duty well done, for, . . . the glory is. if he builds what he can That all the while he is building a Man!” AIMS OF THE SCHOOL m HAT is a normal school? What is its place in the social order? In parti¬ cular, what valid reason for existence has this Eastern Shore institution, and what is there distinctive about our school? It is easy to say that a normal school aims to prepare teachers for service in elementary schools, but this is not all. There should be something in and about every school which stamps it as different from others of its kind. Schools, like individuals, should possess an i ndividuality all their own. A normal school is no exception. While the training schools of a State educa¬ tional system must of necessity prepare their students for similar duties as teachers, and hence can not vary widely in their curriculums or their methods of attaining these common goals, yet there are many wholly legitimate means of expressing a wholesome and attractive individuality. The Salisbury Normal School, with no untoward traditions to hamper it, set out from the beginning to establish, within proper and approved limits, an organization that would prepare its graduates to meet courageously and satisfactorily whatever situations in school life might confront them; a regimen of work and living that would contribute most effectively to the health, happi¬ ness, and comfort of the students; and a school spirit that would charm and inspire all who came within the sphere of its beneficient influence. How well these aims have been realized in the six years that we have endeavored to serve the educational interests of the State can best be attested by those who have lived and worked here, and by critical observers who by personal contacts with the school have been enabled to form unbiased judg¬ ments concerning our contribution to recent educational progress in Maryland. Thirty-Two AT THE DOOR I am here at the door To enter is to cast aside a part of me, Some contentment, It is to lay down a certain quietness Of mind and soul, And to renew the struggle as one Who knows little. I am here at the door. Fast it dawned, this littleness of me. I came Thinking that I knew much. Now I see How very weak withal, I am, And I am dumb. I am here at the door. And going say, I came and lived for a time. I go, With a hunger and hope for more Than I know. Oh door, you have opened the way; You have helped me understand. Mable Willis. Thirty-Three “ . . . .
