S.-XLISBURY SOUND is capable of supporting two fifteen plane squadrons of the Mariner type, both in material upkeep and repair, and personnel sub- sistence, Her facilities include engine repair, hydraulic. repairs, carburetor repairs, metal, accessory, parachute, and photographic shop. In addition to her own officers and crew, she is able to billet over 120 squadron officers and some 200 squadron crew members. Her most striking feature is her large open after-deck where two huge sea- planes can be hoisted aboard and serv- iced at the same time. Two enormous c r a n e s, one on her after-deck and one on her superstructure, lift the planes with ease. Her hospital ward is fitted with 19 beds and a greater number can be available in event of emergency. High- speed boats can be lowered over her sides by cranes and dispatched to refuel planes or boats at sea, and if neces- sary, tow them to safety, Supplies, train- ed mechanics, and medical rescueteams standby, ready to be flown over vast ocean reaches and parachuted to the immediate relief of pl-a-ns or vessels in distress. Weather observation and forecasting, an indis- pensable element of any military organization, be- comes even more important in the Western Pacific Area, due to the frequency and intensity of various tropical storms. Also, accurate weather information is of paramount importance to any seaplane operation which the ship may participate in, The Sally's Aerographer's Mates, although relatively few in number, are a HCONSTANTLY-ON-THE-WATCH crew, keeping both the Patrol Force Staff and ship's company continuously informed of any and all atmos- pheric developments, The overall safety and well-being of the ship is guaranteed to a large degree by these crack weathermen. 1 'J ' 'air K ' Y- ,Q '35 ' ' '-..,n it N 1.-H, ' , fm , Q ,ne i K - if 'sa V N.. :J ff ' ' f x X Q ' X I XX, NH 1 , , by Lx J 5 1 - I' I Wt Y g ll W it T who g C in Q15 I t...-f' V Tl, 7' ,:1, g it mi' , WO-ll li ilagenlmclx Division Ofrit 1 go 443' Q 1 1 o.f' 0 ,f .nf ,pi X 4--,,. 47'- ' -. :W L . 5- XB!!- Bil U fxx 54 ', ,ff-If Www- uqsonh- ia.. aouaimaqul ,uv D003U9A9'I 'MI 'H OI'.L'I 0 2 4 ll X ,,. .,,. x . - + ,-sv- -1- Lp.'fQW'e J-'.-' - '- -' -' in Ujjjffjjj 531: ral ... napl!0 leon: ...nulQQQl!ul :sun N M ' hs 'Z' ,f ' ' Jw 11: 'Ivo - ni ff ,sul 1bN115, J. ix BVU 1 -num . Gay musti-colored bits of bunting stiffening in the breeze, the whirling dervish-like signalman sending semaphore, the in- sistant staccato flashes of light to and from the shipg all are handled by CS Division. Although visual communication is almost as old as seamanship itself, it is still an indispensible part of today's intricate navy. No other form of naval communication is so secure. The signal gang transmits messages on a directional, line-of-sight, beam of light. At night even this narrow beam becomes in- visible as signalmen shift to infra-red light. There is no need to break radio silence when other ships are in sight, and there is no background noise with visual , Regardless of technical progress, the basic rudi- ments of visual communication remain the same as in the days of Napoleon's mechanical semaphore, or even Greek signal fires. Flags and a bright blinker light fill the material requirements, to which must be added an alert, knowledgable signal gang. td 5 tio s ' :- s ,A 3 x Q 1 A n 5 1 4 f PO! J .
