With the advent ot Alaskan statehood in these United States of America, Governor William A. Egan, a native Alaskan elected as its first governor, presented a set of medallions ot the state seal to the U.S.S. SALISBURY SOUND lAV-i3l. The SALISBURY SOUND takes its name from a sound which is located in our newly born state, Alaska. The ship's skipper, Captain Robert F. Farrington, USN, had C..l. Bobango, DCT, and A.N. Tiongco, TN, design the plaque as a tribute to the state with which we are proud to be associated. Cialis SW-3 ' X700 DEDICATION OF THIS BOOK This cruise book is dedicated to the men of this good ship, and especially to those who will recall their days of travel and ventures into lands which were once strange, yet there is more to this than an illus- trated chronicle of mere travel and labors, this will represent a part of the young lives of many of the men in SALISBURY SOUND, spent in gaining adulthood, and the aquiring of certain responsibilities which may be their basis for the future. In gaining this goal, though motivated by others, men of the Navy manning ships on such deployments as these are the bulwark of the Free Nations of the World. Without a solid, strong and willing Navy, we would be faced by men-of-arms, such arms could easily be threatening our own United States, or our neighbors to either the north, south, east or west. The stalwart men of today's Navy are playing a greater part in keep- ing our country free than at any other time in history. The same efforts of our forefathers, who pioneered our country, made life better for future millions. We hope that our own efforts will benefit mankind in the same proportionate numbers. . To you, this book is dedicated and our efforts to please are anxious ones. rg uf EIETEEN YEARS OF SERVICE ln T945 SALISBURYSOUND lAV-T31 was launched by the Todd Shipbuilding Company, and after sea-trials, outfitting and delivery to the Navy at Long Beach, California, she was added to the roster of naval vessels, a new weapon in the Pacifici Feet. A TENDER WORD SALISBURY SOUND is an industrially organized military unit, composed of officers, petty officers, and men of talent and skills necessary in accomplishing the many technical tasks to maintain military readiness. Such tasks include sea- worthiness of the vessel as well as power supply and machinery upkeep. Also, the many operational offices of the military mission such as the aviation repair and overhaul shops, the electronics installations, the communication center, ordnance capabilities, and hospitalization berthing and messing of seaplane crewmen add to the responsibilities that are so far-flung ashore. In this ship such tasks are concentrated into smaller, efficient units with such capable results that the Sea-Air Arm is farther reaching now than at any other time in history. The following pages will picture the personnel, and briefly illustrate the tasks so capably performed by men in this ship of such long, continuous service. I --- OUR NAMESAKE DAITO ART PRINTING CQ., LTD. 19, 2-chome, Shintomi-Cho, Chuo-ku, Tokyo Tel. Tokyo. Q551D 3228, 0211, 1009, 1712, 0202 PROLOGUE There was once a story of a man who was faced with the problem of putting two gallons of water into a one gallon bucket. Neither he, I, nor any other man was able to find a solution to his immediate problem. Trying to illustrate the missions, organization, work and membership of SALISBURY SOUND. in the few pages of this book is certainly difficult as the above problem. The story of SALISBURY SOUND and her crew is a mere sentence in an age old dramatic, history. Her mark of progress is small, it is true, but the accomplishents go far beyond her missions and contribu- tions to the present defense of the Free World of this mid-century era. Every officer of the flag and ship's company and every man in Sally Sound is engaged in training for more than iust a military service. We are also living under conditions that may strengthen our moral obligations as capable men, increase our understanding and tolerance of others, adding to the values of our lives subsequent to departing our ship. What is past is prologue , a wise man once said, meaning that the results of the future may well be based on the performance of the past and the present. In our efforts to accomplish our assigned tasks, it is always the hope of all of us that we may become better prepared to face the future. This book may serve to remind us that our prefatory in this ship might well be a prologue, a beginning, not an end. E.S. ROBINSON, Editor. 511, ,ZF 'tl 'E 1, 25 .
