Bee Treacor of teen Htundred and xty-fo ur ‘Nine + at Dedteation We consider it an honor to pay tribute to three of our teachers who have rendered in- valuable service to us as a Class, as well as to many other students, Their interest in students and their eager- ness to help them have endeared them to all who have come under their influence. Because they have helped and guided so many, we, the class of 1964, dedicate THE BEACON to Mrs, Thelma R, Winder, Mrs. Catherine W. Parsons, and Mrs, Mildred W, Webster. With it, we extend our expressions of grat- MRS, THELMA R, WINDER itude and appreciation. MRS, CATHERINE W, PARSONS MRS, MILDRED W, WEBSTER Tn Memoriam John F Kennedy IQILA9O3 © FABIAN BACHRACH Our nation continues to mourn the untimely deathon Friday, November 22, 1963 of John F, Kennedy, 35th President of the United States, President Kennedy believed in the dignity of the individual and the right of both men and nations to be free from oppression. He believed in peace as well as in freedom, and saw no conflict between the two, He believed in the creativity of the reality of hope. He loved life, He relished laughter and the vigorous life of the mind, He believed in thought. He recognized obligations to people not yet born - to help provide them with a decent world, The loss of our president is total only if we forget what he believed in and what he tried to do, The legacy of John F, Kennedy to the United States and to the world can be a great one if the people wish to be. ; cake ate SCUSRUERE EYP (sa “ hogy +) ae. . gin . a Ae ae Sg: ea aad | 7 Dr EE: Eze : = + o£ = es by Bogs —y ope: The EP ei eh bleep at ee: PLP RIES IE TV lily ps oy ih ¥ . pay Pac aw Ae is iL Ie te, es wT, specs Leg pans tte gee - fon af rae CaF gp 5 thr xh! nf hg pb mpm pre, Z. Drooks MESSAGE TO SENIORS The theme of your yearbook, ‘‘Hands for Service,’’ is an intriguing one, It is very appropriate to the age in which we live, In our everyday hustle and bustle, we are prone to forget our fellow-man and to think only of our own welfare, Service to mankind is one of the noblest objectives to which we can aspire. It is my hope that your experience at Salisbury High School has in some measure contributed to the growth of your “‘Hands for Service’’ and this will be one of your guidelines for living, It is also hoped that growth in this fact of life will continue as you take your place in our complex civilization. Ly Gh x. rove Best of luck to each of you. MR, WILLIAM F, WALLER CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CLASS OF 1964!!! What an honor to commend each of youon a job well done! Your capable, patient, and persevering teach- ers have helped you thus far on your way, They have guided your intellectual growth and aided in the initial preparation for your varied and sundry vocationalchoices, You have been handed the torch of inspiration, May you keep it forever alight! Now that each one of you is about to go your separate way, your thoughts about this happy, united group may indeed become a delightful memory, While looking forward, with great anticipation, to the many days to come, you will treasure those past days as prized possessions always giving praise to those who helped to make your high school training a reality, It is my sincere hope that the future of each graduate will reflect great credit upon his home, his school, and his country, As you approach your great day - commencement, be prepared to face the future with a determination to prove that you can make those moral and social adjustments which will make you worthy citizens in our so- ciety. By having faith, endurance, and a sincere desire to excel, surely SUCCESS will be yours. “Success is failure turned inside out - The silver tint of the clouds of doubt - And you never can tell how close you are, It may be near when it seems afar; So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit - It’s when things seem worst that you mustn’t quit.” WU. %. These scenes all take place within the school building or in completely different locales., As the curtain rises on Act I, the timid and curious Freshmen make many mistakes which furnish some bright comedy moments, The rapidly rising ac- tion shows the students that their lessons will interfere sadly with their enjoy- ment and leisure, At the close of this act, tragedy seems imminent, as there is a desperate affair between the actors and the final examinations, But the students are finally able to come out victorious, The social and athletic activities do not allow somberness to predominate this act, as George Robertson, Richard Brown, and Norman Rider display their potential talents in the rugged game of football and Yancy Carrigan, Gloria Wright, Clifton Gordy, and Margaret Williams display their dramatic talents in Love Hits Wilbur, In Act II the young actors have acquired charm, an ease of manner, and a feeling of secu- rity in their new roles as Sophomores, The actors are greatly inspired by the information which many professionals gave them on Career Day, This inspiration is shown by the diligent strives of the students to achieve their goals, These efforts seem worthwhile as Ronald Roxbury wins the Latin Key and Gloria Wright receives the Citizenship Award, As Act III arrives, some of the actors have become more prominently into the spotlight, This prominence is shown by Mary Hayward, Frederick Nutter, Gwendolyn Morris, Jerrald Neal, Wanda Mitchell, and Constance Payne in the play, Two Dates for Tonight ; Ronald Roxbury who attended the All State Orchestra in Frostburg, Maryland and represented our school on High School Challenge; Gloria Wright and Margaret Williams who became charter members of the National Honor Society; and Karen Taylor and Clifford Gordy who attended Girl's State and Boy's State, The highlight of this entire act, however, :is the Magic Moments which we pro- vided for the Seniors, In Act IV, we, as Seniors are more mature and have acquired poise, We have grown fond of a cast, some of whom we regarded with little favor as the curtain rose on Act I, The action is more rapid and more complicated than in preceding acts, There is more comedy than before and there are some delightful interpolations, We honor all of those who helped to make the Senior Play, The Imaginary Invalid, and the Christmas program, The Incarnate Word, successful. We hope that the members of the football and basketball teams will continue along the road to Fame, We also applaud Eunice Lawrence for her glorious reign as Miss Salisbury High 1963-64, As this act comes to a climax, we anticipate the finale with great anxiety and when we depart, we will have the faith and determination to win leading roles in life, Gloria Wright 43 ee —— Hii Pes MOTTO The Sunset of the Past is the Dawn of the Future” COLORS FLOWER Blue and White Carnation Class Toem SOLEMNLY AND RESPECTFULLY We walk solemnly and respectfully as we leave these great halls Yet our hearts will linger forever; We've shared joys and sorrows within these sturdy walls, And friendships that nothing can sever, In our classes we were touched by the flame of learning, Our future we owe to its light; For this flame has left knowledge within us burning, This we will use to continue our flight, Our principal and instructors served well as our guides, And brightened our dimly lit ways; They taught us the meaning and value of pride A stepping stone for success today, We walk solemnly and respectfully as we leave these great halls Where our parents, dear, entrusted our souls; That we would see the light glowing from these walls, And follow its beams to our goals, Clifton Gordy--Margaret Williams | Senror Class 3S )PONSOLS MR, ROBERT O, BROWN, MRS, FLORA H, DANIELS, MRS, JEANETTE P, CHIPMAN, MRS, CONSTANCE B, MARTIN, Our sponsors have always used their many years of experience to help us in planning and performing our many Senior activities, Sensor Class fficers The senior class officers are elected to lead the seniors in completing their many duties and responsibilities, 45 Salisbury High, we leave you We hate to, but we must We love you so. Senior Sa LY Practice Oession One of the most important factors in the success of a play is the time spent in rehearsal. It is during this time that the director and cast get acquainted with the play, analyze the characters, locate the scenes, and plan the action. The scenes below were taken during one of the many sessions that the cast of the senior play spent rehearsing for the presentation of The Imaginary Invalid, a comedy in three acts. The play, which was written by Moliere in a 17th century setting, concerned a cranky invalid who imagined that he had every type of illness from apepsia to dropsy. His imaginary illness made him a gold mine for his unscrupulous doctor and druggist and dominated the lives of his entire family. LETTER OF ACKNOWLEDGMENTS SALISBURY HIGH SCHOOL LAKE AND MORRIS STREETS SALISBURY, MARYLAND RANDOLPH L. BROOKS WILLIAM F. WALLER PRINCIPAL February 28 9 1964 VICE-PRINCIPAL To Our Supporters: This year we have fought a never-ending battle against discouragement and defeat as we have endeavored to produce this, The Beacon of 1964. Although we have been faced with these problems, we never let them overtake us. Instead, we used all of our efforts and endurance to make this yearbook one that we thought you would always remember and hold dear. The staff offers many thanks to Mrs. Flora Daniels and Mrs. Gladys Goslee, our advisors, for their invaluable help; Mrs. Martin, Mrs. Daniels, Mrs. Chipman, and Mr. Brown, our sponsors, for their loyalt y; and to Mr. Brooks, our principal, and Mr. Waller, our vice-principal, for their constant support and encouragement. We are grateful to our photographer, Mr. Leon Sklar and to the Taylor Publishing Company. A special thanks goes to our patrons and advertisers whose financial support made the publication of this year- book possible. We express our deepest gratitude to all of you and we hope that you will gain many fond memories from reading The Beacon. Sincerely, The Beacon Staff, 1964 SEER ERE nes eae PRR i 9
