4d 2 of 6a : Salisbury High 20th Reinca Foreword We, the 1962 BEACON Staff, hope that this an- nual will become one of your most prized possessions and that you may look back over the faded snapshots and remember the good old days at Salisbury High School. Our high school days are filled with cherished memories. Some you remember better than others, such as that important game you wanted so much to win, your first school dance, the class parties, the thrill of being a senior, and last the wonderful feel- ing of accomplishment when the coveted diploma was placed in your hand. Salisbury High has long beena top school, known and loved by students. In more recent years, ad- miration has rapidly increased with our growing school, a school striving to attain the goal of pre- paring students to live usefully and happily in a dem- ocratic socie ty. Today, we may stand aside, and with one satisfying glance, be convinced that Salis- bury High School has reached this goal--the attain- ment of which has brought with it those very quali- ties that students yearn to claim. In later years, while turning these pages, if you should recall the many smiles, sorrows, and dreams of '62 we shall be content knowing that we have done the thing we were called upon to do. We present to you, the student body of Salisbury High School, the 1962 BEACON. Karen Polk Editor Contents Dedication Administration Faculty Seniors Classes Activities Patrons Advertisement Alma Mater Dear Old Salisbury High, we love you We love to sing your praise; And we'll do our best to serve you Through all our high school days. Chorus Salisbury, we love you true, And this we'll always do. As long as we're united We'll serve and love you true. eaication have been many times when we have needed help and guidance. It was during these times that we found that we could depend on | Mrs. Constance Martin. She has taught us respect and honor in addition to helping | us gain unity as a class. We proudly dedicate this year’s edition to Mrs. Martin for her keen interest, wise | counsel and close friendship which have been invaluable to us throughout our high 4 school years. — Piao]. cipal i L BROOKS li RANDOLPH L. MR. Our New P. About Our Principal Mr. Randolph Brooks, a native of Fruitland, Maryland, proudly proclaims his hometown and its citizens as a source of inspiration during his career as a teacher and principal. His enriched and continuous educational background has adequately prepared him to fulfill his position as a school administrator, and has intelligently enabled him to keep abreast with current educational trends. After graduating from Salisbury High School, he continued his education at Princess Anne Academy, now Maryland State College, Bowie State Normal School and Morgan State College, where he received his Bachelor of Science degree. After obtaining his Master of Science degree from the University of Pennsylvania, he pur- sued further graduate work at the University of Delaware, Temple University and Tuskegee In- stitute. Mr. Brooks also earned an advanced Certificate from the Washington Conservatory of Music and Expression. Our new principal brings 24 year's experience in education to Salisbury High School. His first teaching experience was in Worcester County at the Stockton Elementary School. In 1937 he came to Wicomico County to serve as principal of the Sharptown Elementary School and moved from there in 1939 to the Salisbury Elementary and High School. There he assisted Mr. C. H. Chipman, his predecessor, with the elementary school. Prior to his appointment to Salis- bury High School in June 1961, Mr. Brooks had been principal at the Salisbury Elementary School since 1953. Mr. Brooks spends his leisure hours participating in family, church and community activi- ties. During the school week he lives with his mother, Mrs. John E. Brooks, of Fruitland. On weekends he goes to his home in Bellevue, Maryland, to be with his wife, who is principal of the White Marsh Elementary School. Mr. and Mrs. Brooks worship at the St. Luke's Methodist Church in Bellevue. He is associated with many civic and educational organizations on local, state, and nation- al levels. He willingly endorses and supports any projects which are beneficial to the commu- nity. Music is Mr. Brooks main hobby, although he has written more than fifty poems, one of which was published in the New York World's Fair Anthology of Poetry. Salisbury High is fortunate in having Mr. Randolph Brooks as its principal, for he is richly endowed in mind and spirit and is anxious to pour out his life to enrich the lives of others. As a great educator and leader he proudly accepts what was already here as a heritage -a foundation on which to build greater things. Che Principal's Message ee eens See You, the class of '62, have the good fortune and honor of having completed your high school education. For this I wish to congratulate each of you. One great gift of education is that it gives you the ambition to dream, to ana- lyze, to plan, and to work for a better and happier life. Now the most fascinating subject of your thoughts is the future. May your future be as bright as you deserve and may you become good, worthwhile citizens, always being a beacon light for your school. Whatever problems you may face, whatever difficulties you may encounter, al- ways have faith in yourselves and God. May you remain true to your ideals and your home, and may your endeavors and achievements lead to making the world a better place in which to live. Randolph L. Brooks Your high school days have come to an end. Many were the times that you trudged to this institution in order that you might be better equipped to cope with life ahead. When you look back upon those days, surely, you will cherish the memory of them. Now that you are ready to venture out on your own, the precepts and examples set forth, the many insights imparted through your courses, and the opportunities af- forded for moral and spiritual growth, will come back to you. They will help to give you the courage and strength needed to face life. Just as your school days were not always pleasant ones, neither will be this life into which you are about to enter. It will be during these times that the knowledge your teachers tried to bestow upon you will be like a guiding light. You have my most sincere congratulations. May success and happiness be with you as you go forth in the world to undertake your chosen careers. For life is the mirror of king and slave, ‘Tis just what you are and do; Then give to the world the best you have, And the best will come back to you. Sincerely yours, William F. As the senior class officers are elected on a basis of leadership ability and scholarship, they are looked upon as the controlling body of the most influential class in school. Thus, they try to maintain interest and stimulate action in anything of interest or importance to the class or en- tire body. We as the senior class officers of Salisbury High School attempt to fulfill the duties charged to us, for we realize that the retrogression or progression of our class as part, and our school as a whole, rests entirely in our hands. , Senior Class officers are: President - CAROLYN HULL Vice President - KAREN POLK Secretary - PATRICIA MADDOX Assistant Secretary - MARGARET SELF Financial Secretary - RITA BANKS Chaplain - HOWARD CORBIN Sergeant-at-Arms - RAYMOND BROWN 37s Class History COUNT DOWN TO SUCCESS In June of 1962 we, the passengers of Rocket 56, ended our journey at Salisbury High School. When we boarded the rocket, we were aroused by the fact that we were to be sep- arated into different sections instead of remaining in one large group. Becoming adapted to this new situation was not a difficult achievement. Many of our passengers projected their talents to enhance the success of our flight during the primary portion of the freshman stage. Among them were: Ulyssess Cottman, Melvin Smullen, Sylena Purnell and Richard Jackson who were chosen to attend the Senior Science Convention. Katherine Davis, Theresa Parson, Lottie Jones, Carolyn Hull and Carolyn Maddox made their debut in an Autumn Leaves dance at Morgan State College. These accomplish- ments were only the beginning; greater ones were to come. In 1958 Margaret Self competed against every division of passengers - not only in our rocket, but in more advanced ones as well - to win the title of May Queen. From here we explored the last section of our Freshman Stage in which we experienced the essential revision of our group according to our set goals or vocations. Here our rocket burned red-hot flames as we projected into the frontier of extracurricular activ- ities. We rose to fame in these activities. Harold Watson highlighted the Junior Varsity team and Arnold Stanford sparked the Cross Country Squad. Many others participated in the Band, Glee Club and Football teams. These achievements ignited the path to success in our Senior Stage. The progression into the Senior Stage enabled us to initiate two extentions to our rocket. We christened them G-Wing and H-Wing. As we advanced into this stage, we again rated recognition. Diana Allen and Ulyssess Cottman performed with the All-State Band. Harold Hammond boasted his fame by his excellent performance on the football team while Lowell Brown skyrocketed to success on the track team. 10B, as a group, participated in the 1959-60 Battle of Words. Carolyn Hull represented our rocket at a New Homemaker's of America Con- vention in Arkansas while Carolyn Maddox spent six weeks at a Science Institute at Vir- ginia Union University. Climaxing that portion of the Senior Stage was a Rendezvous Under the Stars at our Junior Senior Prom. As we approached the close of this final stage, we were still gaining recognition. Howard Wilson, Robert Horsey and William Northern represented the New Farmers of America at Georgia. George Wright and Richard Jackson attended a Mathematical convention at Wicomico Senior High School. Barbara Handy reigned as Miss Salisbury High for 1961-62. Thus, our trip progressed. After our Baccalaureate Sermon and Commencement Exercises held in June of 1962, many of us regarded our flight as finished. But had it really ended, or just begun? We had reached the nose cone of our rocket - it was now left to each of us to take the initiative and fly to greater heights. Now life’s pathway is ajar With courage we'll make our journey afar We'll try to do our very best Then we'll excel all the rest. Parents and teachers we do commend For the numerous efforts they did lend. In the depth of our hearts they will remain, Because of them--new heights we'll gain. To our principal we give our utmost praise The banner of honor to him we raise, He has warned and prepared us for every test And shown great interest in our success.
