Chipman, a native of Cape May, New Jersey, who attended both the elementary and high schools of Cape May, came to Salisbury, Maryland, in the year of 1915, to serve as the school principal of the Salisbury Industrial School. We proudly present some actualities relating to the history and historical nature of his numerous achievements. After completing his high school course in his home town, he entered Howard University in Wash- ington, D.C., and completed the courses leading to B.S., B.A., and B.Ped. degrees. Always filled with zeal, there was no end to future development. Through summer sessions, extension courses and workshops, both in study and instruction, much time was spent in studying the following schools for graduate work: University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Hampton Institute, Hampton, Virginia; Penn State University, Penn State, Pennsylvania; Cornell University, Ithaca, New York; Chicago University, Chicago, Illinois; Tuskegee Institute, Tuskegee, Alabama; Bowie State Teachers College, Bowie, Maryland. It was at Princess Anne Academy in Princess Anne, Maryland, that he taught State Extension classes in Negro History, Mathematics and Chemistry. Other extension courses taught were at Bowie State Teachers College, Bowie, Maryland, Morgan College, Baltimore, Maryland, and St. Clair High School in Cambridge, Maryland. Down the years Mr. Chipman has been associated with many civic, religious and educational organizations on local, state and national levels and has held offices in many of these organizations, some of which have been: President of Region V of the American Teachers’ Association which is comprised of the states of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland; President of the Maryland Education Association; an active member of Pioneer's Educational Association of Maryland; Secondary Principals’ State and National Association; Past President of a local Frontiers Association of America; Past President of The Wicomico Educational Association; an official of the E.S.P.G., Fraternally served as an exalted ruler of the Independent Benevolent Order of Elks, and a member of the Keystone Masonic Order of Cape May, New Jersey, and of the Knights of Phythias. He is a member of the State and Nation- al Mathematics, Science and Foreign Language Associations, the National Education Association, the National Administration Association and the Middle States Association of Colleges, the Maryland State Teachers Association and its legislative department. He has been a delegate to many national N.E.A., a A.A.S.A., and Mathematics and Science conventions in many states of the union. He was president of M.E.A. which sponsored the erection of Frederick Douglass statue on Morgan College campus. In religion and religious affairs he has been active, not only as a member of John Wesley Church, Salisbury, Maryland, but is also president of the Trustee Board, a member of the Financial and Education- al Boards. He has made other contributions to religious development throughout the county and state. He is engaged many times as a speaker and lecturer on various church, civic, fraternal and educational programs not only in Maryland, but other states as well. His hobbies are reading, writing both prose and poetry, music and athletics. At present he maintains a high rank in the Maryland Credit Union. as the state director for the East- ern Shore Credit Unions, a member of the Wicomico County Credit Union, the Eastern Shore and state organizations. He is a member of the Youth Commission of Wicomico County, Treasurer and director of the Big Brother Organization, and is a member of the Boy Scout Council. He is committee chairman of John Wesley Church Scout Troop 115 and Salisbury High School Explorers. He is a member of the In- terracial Commission of Wicomico County. Some of the many citations received have been from the Pi Alpha Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Del-Mar-Va Boy Scout Certificate for Merit and Outstand- ing Service, and the National Credit Union Certificate for Faithful and Outstanding Services. We are justly proud of our principal, Mr. Chipman, and wish to extend to him our sincere thanks for his continous efforts to promote student activities, for his infinite loyalty to the school staff and community and for his never ending interest in us and our future. A quiet evening at home is a rarity to our civic-minded principal and his wife. Here they enjoy one of those evenings. : sit J : Watching wrestling matches is a RIBAK 8 JM igs Bong ng SN Oy, SR AR eal A TAMER tiie Me wa Sue HOY Atel” lis Om: ie Principal's Message To The Seniors Here's a tribute to another wonderful group of people = the Salisbury High School class of '61. Bennett former Superintendent of Schools of Wicomico County steered a course and maintained acceleration that kept the county's progress in education abreast with the modern trends in American way of living. For forty years he watched the growth of the county schools change from one room schools tocon- sOlidation and the construction of the campus type schools; Salisbury High School being one of these schools. Mr. Bennett was a great administrator. For him, the battles of overcoming opposite points of view were always well handled. He made one feel his belongingness, thereby making it a great pleasure to work with him. He was also active in local, state, and national, civic, religious and educational organizations and maintained an untiring zest until his retirement July 31, 1957. Set precedents - be unique - be the best in your class; This advice they've given us numerous times in the past; Therefore who are we to blame if we do not find success? They have warned us of every pitfall; prepared us for every test. Did we take heed to the Detours, the Guide Posts along the way, Or did we go on speeding, living just from day to day? This will be answered in the future for we know very well, If we live long enough, time will not fail to tell. Now we realize our teachers alias Detours alias Guide Posts Struggled much and worried long, never having time to coast; Disappointed, perhaps discouraged, when the students stopped to pout, They were always filled with pride when good products were turned out. To our principal and our teachers, who have done their very best, To our custodians and our cafeteria workers, and also to all the rest, With gratitude, we.say, Well done! During our first year, we began to make the adaption of a student in a new home. It was amazing how some of the students adjusted to this strange environment. At the start of the eighth grade, we were astonished by the strides made by individuals. We rendered our first program on March 25. This was an introduction of the varied talents and abilities possessed by many of us, however, this was not enough for such an energetic body. To spotlight the position of our class, we participated in a contest known as Battle of Words. Wavie Gibson and Clarence Polk em- erged as winners, This set us well on our way, Strive not to equal, but to excel the other classes. After a short vacation during the summer, we returned in September with the surprise of being separated. Yes, we were parted from our friends, to be placed in groups according to our vocations. 9A and 9B explored a field of foreign language as well as more complicated mathematics. Under the guidance of Mr. Polk, some of the members helped mold the Student Council of Salisbury High. Clarice Henry, Jessie Smiley, Wavie Gibson, and Clarence Polk were outstanding members. In the fourth year, each individual had to carry his own load. Initiative, ambition, courage, and skill were displayed by many of us. Some of the boys began to explore the athletic field. David Williams dis played his amazing ability to handle the basketball, which aided us to win the State Class B Championship. Robert Douglas, Russell Jones, Wavie Gibson, and Royal Jenkins participated in a spectacular gymnastic meet at Wicomico Senior High. With the introduction of baseball, James Brown, Russell Jones, Reginald Bounds, and Tyrone Wright took to the diamond with great pride. The school spirit flourished in that September when Mr. F. Waller and his squad dressed in those maroon and gold uniforms. Among the many outstanding performers were: Wavie Gibson, Charles Sport, Russell Jones, Tyrone Wright, and Robert McGrif. The most exciting event that year was the Jr. = Sr. Prom. It was indeed a treat and a remembrance for all. In September 1960, a group of approximately 114 students stood in front of the building and gazed at their final residence of public education. We were not the timid and frustrated boys and girls of five years age, but mature, ambitious, and dignified young men and women, The year began with a narration of visit to Girls' and Boys’ State told by Jessie Smiley, Clarice Henry, and James Mitchell, By December we were settled and ready to take part in the responsibilities obligated to seniors. Several scholarship tests were taken and many lectures were given us by former graduates. We have enjoyed being students of Salisbury High. The senior class officers are elected to take the leadership in getting the work done. Upon these people rest the success or failure of the senior class. The officers are selected on the basis of their leadership, ability, and scholarship with the hopes of producing the best guidance through these junior leaders. It is a gigantic task but they tackle it earnestly, sincerely, and whole-heartedly.
