Not shown: Marcellus AN OUTLINE OF THE HISTORY OF THE FAMOUS CLASS OF 1957 The purpose of this history is not to relate every step in the progress of a people from their humble beginning as high school students five years ago to their arrival at the dizzy height they now occupy. On the contrary, in accordance with the modern tendencies in historical writing, the outlook aims to em- phasize only those factors in our class development which appeal to us as most vital from the standpoint of today, and to explain prevailing conditions and institutions by showing how they came about. This work is divided into three parts: Discovery, Exploration, and Settlement; with an afterword in which some strictly personal opinions are hazarded regarding the future of the class. DISCOVERY The discovery of the class of 1957 was accidental, Five years ago, early one morning on the 6th of September, 1952, the faculty of the Salisbury High School was s trolling aimlessly through the corridors chatting about the just ending vacation and wondering whether there would be any startling changes in their work during the coming year, Suddenly they caught a glimpse of something new and strange! Just inside the front door huddled together in mute embarrassment and anxiety were the members of what be- came the class of 1957. To the casual eye, they seemed merely a group of ordinary boys and girls -- well dressed, reasonably good looking and badly frightened, But to the trained eyes of these dauntless and experienced explorers, these strangers seemed distinct and widely separated individuals, each pos- sessing aptitudes and talents, deficiencies and capabilities decidedly worth finding. EXPLORA TION Accordingly, each of the discoveries became an explorer, The strangers were divided into small groups and assigned to the care of different explorers, They were given the name 8th graders, and be- came a part of the life of the school. They were taught many new strange customs and manners and were required to learn difficult lessons. At first, they often wished they had never been discovered; but before a year was over, they became thoroughly at home in their new surroundings, The most unpleasant thing about this 8th year was the contempt in which they were held by those who had been residing in the school for a longer period than they, They understood, however, that this was the custom of the country and ignored it, During the first month of the year they suffered many in- conveniences because of their unfamiliarity with the new country and its traffic rules, They were for- ever taking wrong turns and finding themselves in the wrong corridor and arriving at their classrooms half an hour late, Because of this they had to become familiar with the topography of the school and were often in the right places at the wrong times, With the coming of September, skilled in acquiring the customs of the school, they were called ninth graders and the process was called by a native name, promotion, The routine of the classroom was now familiar, and they found studying easier than before, The talents discovered in the previous year were developing. Reaching forward into the ninth grade, they found strange things. The third year was one of hard work, and the dreaded ordeal was possessed with few casualties. The teachers had endeared themselves to the hearts of the class, and there was a feeling of genuine friend- ship throughout the school, During the year, social functions of great importance occurred, Among per- sons of the class who were outstanding during the year was John Clark 10A President; John attended a con- ference at Bowie State Teachers College. Margaret Bailey was outstanding for her work in Home Eco- nomics. She attended the National New Homemaker's of America Convention at Pine Bluff, Arkansas, She was also chosen Miss Fashionetta of 1954, In the English Department, Mary Everett wrote two award winning stories for two of the countries leading magazines on Romance, The entire class took a memo- rable trip to the Nation's capital, Several members gained fame in Music, Journalism, Athletics, Speech and Dramatics, The class presidents were John Clark 10A, Joan Hill 10B, Dorothy Leatherbury 10C, and Bertha Preston 10D, The Junior year was to be one of great work, and new adventures, The greatest task for the young and eager minds was preparing for the Junior-Senior Prom, This was the first real formal function of High Society of which the class underwent, Again the instructors urged the class to organize into one whole body so that they might better endure hardships to come, The class officers were as follows: Presi- dent, John Clark; Vice President, Margaret Bailey; Secretary, Jean Elsey; Treasurer, Preston Pinkett; Chaplain, Mary Everett; Sergeant-at-Arms, Harry Wright. Now for the year of reckoning -- the greatest year of the history of the class of 1957. Again they underwent a similar process of promotion, this time a great thrill accompanied it, For now after four years of hardships, work and many new adventures, they were at the top of long flights of stairs. They were “Seniors”! With the gaining of this title, they began to take themselves more seriously than before. The organization of the Senior Class was noteworthy, the following list of officers being in charge: Presi- dent, John Clark; Vice President, Edgar Mitchell; Secretary, Jean Elsey; Assistant Secretary, Dorothy Leatherbury; Financial Secretary, Monterey Banks; Treasurer, Preston Pinkett; Chaplain, Connie Gaines; Sergeant-at-Arms, Harry Wright, The class project for the year was the preparing and publishing and putting together of the yearbook, This proved to be the most difficult problem ever undertaken by the class of ‘57, They attacked it vigorously and had much success accomplishing the task, The social events were marked with brilliance. Among those noteworthy ones was the election of Consdevella Gaines as Miss Salisbury High for 1957. The runners up and maids-of-honor were Phyllis Harris, Arelela Hull, Agnes Polk, Shirley Dutton, and Dorothy Leatherbury, A number of Seniors gained distinction during the year, particularly those whose discovery delighted the explorers, Among those mentioned for their outstanding accomplishments were Paul Hull, Harry Wright, Alton Jones, Randolph White, and Robert Brown who are to be commended for their great work for their New Farmers of America, On their trip to Atlanta, Ga., Paul Hull was elected Second National Vice President for the entire N,F,A. On October 20, 1956, Arelela Hull and Phyllis Harris represented the school at the unveiling of the Frederick Douglass monument at Morgan State Col- lege. In Music, Connie Gaines was among those chosen to represent the school in the all-state chorus. Along the sports lines, seven seniors were responsible for the winning of the district five touch football championship. A class song, will, and motto were adopted and used on every possible occasion priate celebration, a ceremony known as Commencement was held, Speeches were m sung, and scrolls signifying the skill and finesses were given to the Seniors By way of appro- ade, songs were SETTLEMENT This was a period not so easy to describe, In these rapid and disturbing times settled for long, but it appears that Seniors were urged to Stay in this country to wid five years previously to be explored and now were about to be tions, Each is destined to become famous throughout the land nothing remains ch they had come settled, They have all chosen their voca- Yd OG EE 4 nd ch ee SENIOR SUPERLATIVES MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Margaret Bailey “en sneer r oe at er ee oe ne A, Ree ri ' ae 4 + . be - “ =, a 4 _ ° . ‘ oaveteie ee DS ” “ ger’: —_ Russell Brown BES T PUBLIC SPEAKERS Phyllis West John Clark MOST STUDIOUS William Jones Dorothy Leatherbury ? os $, a . whe __ « A « aes b Ree 4 es ak ee na oS ee : —. . od — x , y , “ar ey | .
