' And... MR. JOHN E. BENSON was elected as principal of the Salisbury School District in 1934. This year, Mr. Benson marks his 40th year in the teaching profession of which 31 years have been devoted to Salisbury. Mr. Benson came to Salisbury well prepared in training and experience. His ad- vanced education was at Otterbein College of Ohio and Temple University in Phila- delphia, receiving his Masters Degree from the University of Pittsburgh. His early experience was as a teacher at Bolivar High School in Westmoreland County. This was followed by teaching positions at East Conemaugh High School, Cambria County, Stoneycreek Township High School, Somerset County and Glouchester City High School in our neighboring State of New jersey. Mr. Benson has been active in professional educational organizations and is at the present time President of the Somerset County Administrators Association. During the years under the administration of Mr. Benson, the public schools of Salisbury-Elk Lick have experienced an unprecedented period of progress. This progress included the establishment of a Commercial Department, Instrumental Music Department and the introduction of a Yearbook into our school system. The physical plant of the district was not neglected under his administration. All of the elementary school buildings were renovated and in some cases altered, making them more functional and healthful. Mr. Benson was also very instrumental in the planning of the present junior-Senior High School Building which was first used in 1954-55. Mr. Benson's leadership abilities were also to benefit our community beyond the realm of his chosen pro- fession. He is a past president of the Salisbury Lions Club, has served the United Church of Christ as Sun- day School Superintendent for many years and is presently serving as an elder. The students recognize that Mr. Benson has given unsparingly of his time and energy to the advance- ment of the Salisbury-Elk Lick School System often with great sacrifice and inconvenience to himself. His leadership, sound judgment, grasp of the problems involved in all phases of school administration, in- terest in children and teachers, made him a most valuable public servant. 'Qvulmrwgyf We note hereby his conscientious devotion to the trust given him these 31 years, and express herewith both for ourselves and for the community a deep and abiding sense of appreciation for 'his faithful performance to the duties of Supervising Principal of the Salisbury-Elk Lick School System. 744 Q ' af 1965 Page 9 44157064544 cam
