This year the hard hitting Hornets under new coach John Padjen fielded the best team in many a season. They finished 5th in the Huron League, winning three games and losing five during the full ' season's play. In all their victories, the Hornets shut out their opponents, and they scored in every game but two. If the team keeps improving next year as it did this, we can expect big things from them in seasons to come. With his team winning 12 games and losing 6, Coach Padjen guided them to a co-cham- pionship of the Huron League. They also won the consolation trophy in the Christmas tournament held here. The Hornets were the only team to place two men on the Huron League All Star Team. Jerry Gonser, a repeater from last year, won a berth as a guard and forward Don Feldkamp was the only unanimous choice on the team. Hornet guard Vern Drake got honorable mention. Mr. Padjen is to be congratulated for his fine work. In his first year as coach here he brought Saline the first championship the school has had in any sport since its entry into the Huron League. Kindergarten is a wonderful experience for some and a most terrifying one for others, but with such a wonderful teacher as Miss Joann, we soon became accustomed to the regular routine of school. Most prominent in our minds is story-time, when Donald Feldkamp, Josephine Ford, Eugene Leutheuser, Carol Schrader, Kay Austin, Collene Gross, Howard Braun, Lou Ann Elfring, Sue Thomas, Steve McArthur, Gerald Haarer, and Jerry Gonser gathered to listen to the stories Miss Joann read to us. Miss Joann was also our teacher in first grade. We were in the same room with the kinder- garten which is now the class of '53'. We still recall the day Ronald Finkbenier squashed his re- cess banana all over Dick Miller's peg board. This resulted in a good sound spanking from Miss Joann. ' In the second grade we struggled through arithmetic with Miss Fredericks. In the third and fourth grades, we followed Heidi and her adventures every morning with Miss Morden. Ann Taylor joined our class in the third grade and Sharon Muir in the fourth. We missed Josephine Ford, Carol Schrader and Gerald Haarer, who left us to attend the new Henry Ford School west of Saline. Our year with Miss Johnson was a stepping stone toward the sixth grade and our new teacher Miss Vallie where we considered ourselves very grown up. That year is remembered by the many plays we presented. In the seventh grade we started that climb up stairs to our homeroom and sponsor, Mr. Osgood That year is well remembered for the good start we made financially, one successful project being our Cake Walk . Glennis Brososky was added to our class roster that year. Our eighth grade class was considerably larger than before, because of the addition of Gordon Barnes, Hattie May Sanders, Jorun and Charles Anderson, and William Klager. Mr. Collins became our sponsor. Remembered was the Hallowe'en party held at Kay Austin's with its songs around the bon- fire and plenty of cider, doughnuts, and apples. At last we were freshmen! Our class gained new strength and new members. They were Betty Haeussler, Emil Sattler, Eleanor Kuder, John Klumpp, Neil Lindeman, Sally Meske, Eldean Hieber, Marlene Wild, Lois McTaggert, Jim Schroeder, and Grace Steeb. Initiated in our sophomore year was the Penny Carniva1 , which proved to be very successful and helped our treasury to grow. We welcomed Marilyn Walker who has been a great asset to our class. The junior year found us very busy with the many banquets, our play, Our Hearts Were Young and Gay , and our J-Hop. All these proved to be great successes. And now we are seniors and we are trying to crowd everything into this last year. We will always remember our football dinners, paper drives, senior play and basketball concessionsg the guidance of Mr. Collins and the efforts of our parents all of which made our long-awaited senior trip possible. ' Florence Kierczynski joined us in our senior year, and we were also honored to have three German students graduate with our class, namely, Christa Breitkreutz, Bina Zettl, and Egon Gross. Classes for years to come will be able to remember us when they read our names which are en- graved on the Citizenship Cup and the Scholarship Award which we received in our sophomore and junior years. As we go our separate ways and later pick up our yearbook, now and then, to read, we will always find enjoyment, pleasure and laughter as we review our school years together! GOOD LUCK TO THE CLASS OF 52 ANN ARBOR KROGER STORE 2545 West Stadium Blvd. and Jackson Ave. 59 Clay froplzecy This is another of my exciting experiences taken from my scrapbook as a photographer for the Holiday magazine. It was in June of 1962 when I was contacted by the very distinguished hotel mag- nate, Mr. Duane Hilton Girbach. My first impression of Mr. Girbach was that he took complete control of any situation that he encountered, and it was quite apparent that he had gained his high position in the financial world because of his outstanding personality. His proposition to me was that I was to cover the grand opening of his new establishment, The Sunset Beach Hotel on the Waikiki Beach in Hawaii. I was to take a full picture history of the first week's activities and the guests to live in the hotel. This would be used as a feature in the magazine that employs me. After a very comfortable trip on the luxurious Kierczynski Airliner owned by the who holds the record of flying over the Himalaya Mountains without an accident during escorted all the way by a group of jet planes led by the air ace -- Eldean Hieber, we Hawaii. The presence of that gorgeous film star, only woman which we were landed in Brenda Glenn or Glennis Brososky, whose latest film is Oldsmobile Named Desire gave me one of the biggest thrills of my life. I was shocked to receive three one dollar cigars as a publicity gift from tobacco magnate Collene Gross -- owner of the Puffo Cigar Company. Senator Eaton happened to be travelling for a much needed rest at the ing his Senate Crime Investigation Hearings at ing his own brand of cigars. We Girbach. On be made stead of arriving at the hotel, I waited in the were met at the airport by some Hilton limosines which had been new hotel after complet- New York. I almost choked as he insisted on smok- sent to pick us up by Mr. beautiful lobby until the rest of my assignment was to clear. I looked over the magazines on the rack and was surprised to see a cover boy in- a cover girl on a magazine. On scanning it, I learned that it was not a glamour boy but the editor of True Confessions, Emil Sattler, who contributes a majority of the material himself. Since I could not get my interview with my boss right away, I took out my notebook and pencil and proceeded to start to collect material for my feature article. As I headed for the beach, I passed a billboard which colorfully showed the for the coming week. A sneak preview of the Haarer , starring new TV idol Gerald Haarer Hemenway, and helpful hints on how to hold a afternoon entertainment in the Rose and Silver Room new television program Fifteen Minutes of Ham with was displayed. The Lady of Charm , Miss Martina man were also on the agenda. To top it off was the promise of a colorful fashion show with the former Sue Thomas as commentator. Miss Thomas is the director, producer and star of TV's You Can Be a Model sponsored by Miller's Stork Shop. I was looking forward to a week packed full of entertainment. My eye was attracted to the beautiful beach where I saw about ten Hawaian lovelies doing some- thing that like the Turkey Trot. I very soon was informed that the fellow teaching them was a Willie Klager who was homesick and needed the girls to remind him of high school days when he did cales- thenics during football practice. Oh! Willie! I started back to the hotel, because many of the guests were soon due to arrive. And I wanted to personally interview some. The first guest I approached was Marlene Wild, proprietor of Wi1d Mar's Casino in Las Vegas Nevada. It seemed she was seeking to substitute the sound of the surf for that of the roulette wheels As I approached an arriving couple, I started to question the gentleman but soon was informed who was boss in the family. They were Mr. and Mrs. Jasper S. Haffington who vacationed eleven months out of every year. I learned that the lady was the former Eleanor Kuder who had recently married the seventy-eight-year-old millionaire. I also managed to interview the very famous missionary doctor, Christa Breitkreutz, who stopped at the hotel for a much needed rest before sailing back to Africa. I was resting under a palm tree when I noticed a group of people led by a native pass before me. I let my curiosity get the better of me and followed them. I learned that they were going to visit a native village. As we were walking along, I got to talking with some of the group, and one couple turned out to be Jo and Shorty Feldkamp who had a very interesting story to tell concerning their trip to Hawaii It seems that they drive twin yellow school buses for Saline High School, and the money that they earned paid for their trip. Bus drivers are getting paid quite a bit these days. I had the pleasure of speaking to a very charming lady, Grace Steeb, who happened to be the private secretary for John D. Rockefeller, Jr. in New York. Her employer gave her this trip as a birthday gift. As we neared the village, one of the gentleman in the group ran on ahead and began to talk very rapidly to a group of the natives. He turned out to be Charles Anderson, who was interested in finding out the possibilities for the Hot Rod enterprise on the island. I noticed one beautiful native girl's grass skirt and was so fascinated by it that I became so 60 bold as to ask her where she got it. She coolly replied that it was especially made for her by Howard Braun who personally comes to Hawaii to fit them. One gentleman of the group wasn't even interested in the lovely Hawaiian girls but instead was looking at the native animals. I found out later that he happened to be Gordon Barnes brilliant rab- bit breeder for White Laboratories, Inc. Betty Haeussler was examining one of the native girl's snail collection. As she is the chief X-Ray technician for the Chicago Aquarium, her job is to locate all the little snails that are eaten up by whales. Mary Jane Wahl, the designer of convertibles for the Ford Motor Company, was examining several of the natives carts in order that she might get a few ideas. To refresh myself before dinner I enjoyed a luxurious half-hour in Jim Schroeder's Turkish Bath. I felt like a new man afterwards as I donned my tux for dinner and the floorshow in the Rose and Silver room. I almost collided with a very lovely lady who interested me. She was Sharon Muir Drake who had done such a beautiful decorating job on the hotel. She also kept a vigiliant eye on her husband Verne who was a lifeguard on the beach, because there had been a record number of recent drowning at- tempts by girls who wanted to be saved by Verne. I was greeted and led to my table by the charming hostess, Louanne Elfring, who had given up her job as gossip editor for the Mooreville Tribune for this position. ' As I waited for my dinner, I was surprised to see Dagmar and her housband David Zick, who is currently acting as her bodyguard, enter the dining room. As my eyes became adjusted to the dim light, I noticed Neil Lindeman the Star football player from!-Iarvard, arrive with his chemistry prof , Ann Taylor, who has a hard time keeping her class at attention. Then the spotlight fell on Egon Gross and his Hula Hula Hawaiians , according to his custom, he gave us a beautiful demonstration of the hula while directing. Judging by the amount of applause it was assured that he was a success. The spotlight now enveloped the lovely song stylist Marilyn Walker. She was a beautiful vision. Kay Austin Guenther came into the room in a striking skunk coat. She attracted as much attention as the floor show. It seems that she and her husband Vic own the largest skunk farm in the United States. The coats are the latest style for the Jo College these days. Directly at a table across from me was the very famous woman scientist, Jorun Anderson, who dis- covered the pill to cure morning after the night before. About 11:45 A. M. it was announced that at midnight there would be a swimming party in the hotel pool. I was very eager to cover this event as I knew that it would supply some very colorful pictures for my feature story. . Before I left, I stopped to chat with the famous bartender, Eugene Leutheuser, who drives the only Rolls Royce on the island. I learned a lot of new jokes for my private file. The first person I saw on my way to the pool was the lovely Carol Schrader Scruggs wearing a very striking black bathing suit. She was with her husband, the Secretary of the Air Force, Howard Scruggs. By the time I reached the pool I saw a very vigorous water fight taking place between four fellows. They were, Stephen MacArthur, well known swimming instructor in the French Foreign Legion which is stationed on the Sahara Desert. His companion was John Klumpp, Inspector of the Interior, a special as- signment for Indian Reservations. The opposing team consisted of Donald Feldkamp, coach of the girls' basketball team-- The Bridge- water Be-Bops --which stars that whiz Marilyn Adair and Norman Kruger, bathing suit designer whose bathing suits are known to every girl in the United States as7'by Norman. Lois McTaggert must have found her swim refreshing after arriving from her work as chief telephone operator for Dead Mans Gulch. She had dial phones installed in her home town, Saline, before leaving. My flight was scheduled for 3:00 A. M. I managed to break away from the party and hurriedly packed my bags for my trip home. I was very reluctant to leave this paradise which I had enjoyed for this short time. ' When I was comfortably seated in my seat on the plane, I noticed that there were only three other persons in the plane besides the crew members. Fraulein Bine Zettl, German Ambassador to the United States was returning to post after a tour of Hawaii. A very charming lady sat next to me. She was Miss Hattie May Sanders Home Economics professor at Wellesly College for Girls. In the back of the plane dozing was Sally Meske, who is now showing her art work in the Blue Room of the Chicago Art Museum. Before I fell asleep I thought about my experiences and the people I had met. It was one of the most interesting assignments I had ever had, and I had made many friends, It certainly is a small world. As I stepped down from the plane on arriving at the airport I heard a page shouting, Calling Jerry Gonser--you are to call the Holiday office. Well, that's me and I wonder what it will be this time.
