Dedication MODERN WORLD affairs are tossed about like the vegetables in our imaginary salad, but there is a lack of harmony among the world's cooks, however, we can only wish the latter were more like the mem- bers on the Board of Trustees of the Salinas Unified High School District. These outstanding men of our com- , munity have devoted unbelievably long hours in close cooperation to further the mental, physical, and spiritual well-being of each and every student, teacher, and admin- istrator. ROY AI. LADRA, Pn-siclrnl 6 Vr'gc'!nbl1' Shipprr and Grower Board Member Since 1943 BECAUSE OF their liberality, sym- pathy, and hard work our lives have been enriched in many new ways. just this year the school cafeteria began to serve breakfast for sleepy- heads, a soda fountain was set up to be managed by the Future Farmers, a class in Driver Education now helps us safeguard our own and others' lives on the highways, and the Religious Education Program was revised through harmonious and co-operative relations with our churches. In gratitude for all the benefits received during war and peace. we dedicate to these men the 1947 lil Gabilnn. MR. T, R. Mr. William Fisher took us under his Wing on our very first day at S.U.H.S., giving us our start as freshmen. He pulled us over the soph slump, and inspired us with an eagerness to learn and have fun. Miss Margaret Lea guided us through our junior and senior years, preparing us for the next big step, a job or college. To you, Miss Lea and Mr. Fisher, We give our utmost thanks in deep appreciation for all the help you have given us through four of the most important years of our lives. Your kind and understanding ways have won for you the greatest admiration and respect of the class of 1947. MISS MARGARET l,liA 3' E ,I 4, '4f,t - j1'0,. MR. WILLIAM FISHER Senior Uffilzers OH, 'riui AGoNiEs of studentsll' came the cry of the seniors four years ago, and now, But haven't we had fun going through them! The thrill when that dreamed-of prom date came true, the nights we prayed for an assembly the same period as the linglish test, and the startling dis- covery it was time to be measured for caps and gowns - these incidents are now memories. XVe won't forget how Dixie Gregory and Jim W'ill- oughby enlivened our ln- stallation Program by their toe - wiggling interpreta- tion of Doin' What Comes Natcherlyf' and we are proud our officers started a new tradition, the free Farewell Dance for midterm graduates. Special mention goes to Dot Ottone, head yell leader, and her assistant, Betty Andalft, because that ever-present Ottone grin and Andalft vivacity at our games and rallies gave our rooting section added zest and spirit: and to Keith Verdier, who as chairman of the Senior Informal, turned out a riotous original show in his own in- imitable manner. N Aw Q Ui 4 f Class ef 1943 WHAT A HECTIC YEAR-something interesting happened every moment! First Miss Evelyn Sharp was asked to take the place of Mrs. Dye, who left to join her husband in the Aleutians just after the start of the fall term. As peace and order again descended, the juniors were faced with the startling realization that they didn't have a roof over their prom-struck heads. Rumors werelreally flying while one by one Del Monte, Rio Del Mar, and Asilomar were Hxed on and then abandoned because of either a liquid or solid objection, until finally the local U.S.O. capitulated. Those diligent juniors exhausted almost every possible money-making device, from the sale of cokes and candy at rallies to the making of purple and gold pom-poms for games. Very mysterious promotion resulted in the sale of many Gehitas,', a novel type of pencil, which brought in quite a sum. Nor was the junior-Senior Prom the last service rendered the graduates by their successors. Many a sun-burned popsicled junior trudged happily through graduation rehearsals as a proxy. For their hard work, loyalty, and co-operation, we honor the class of 1948. Class Representatives w I: D. Serber, S. Ables, D. Baylcs, F. Scrpa, N. Grasso, I. Evans, N. Mitchell. Run' 2: I.. Class nf 1949 SURROUNDIED BY CHINESE lanterns topped with striking red dragons showing their jagged White teeth, the Sophomores held their annual Soph Hop, the Orient being their art theme this year. Witliout the help of such sophomores as Viola Bellora, Betty Parks, Shirley Strom, Sally Church, Barbara Hardwick, and Gloria Wilkerson, the Hop would never have been the bright, effective affair it was. Other sophs also contributed to the prestige of S.U.H.S. Eugene Riley proved himself a capa- ble F.F.A. member when he was chosen by forty businessmen of San Francisco to care and keep a calf which they presented to him, knowing it would grow up pound-full and tender under his watchful eye. From now on steak-hungry students will know whose friendship to cultivate. Wlien it came to sports, Don Farr and Bob Nunes in football, Ernie Halcon in basketball, Bill Fredricks and Johnny Bellonc in baseball, and Joe Hootman in track added their skills to the many athletic events. Earl Adams, Janet Green, Lola Cross, Jeanette Bardin, Dick Young, and Carolyn Jorgenson worked hard trimming the pastel umbrellas with spring flowers and decorating the gym with crepe paper rain. The Frosh almost made money. Other outstanding freshmen were Hector Burke, the only Frosh on Student Court, Ruth Ann Kjaer and Joan Colby, the Girls' League representatives, and Chris Ginn and Decimo Andrade, up and coming young sprouts in the field of sports. McKillop, who has been elected president of the California School Band, Orchestra, and Vocal Association of the northern district, including all schools north of Bakersfield. Although we have long appreciated his fine leadership in our own music depart- ment, we were thrilled to learn that his baton now com- mands a greater body of musicians. Despite this additional responsibility, Mr. McKillop led our orchestra through an outstanding year. Both the Mid- winter and Spring Concerts were sell-outs, and the hard- working students earned that deep feeling of personal satisfaction which comes only from the knowledge of a job well done. liarly Morning Practice am on Terry, Faith Walker Virginia Garcia I,arry Dimmick Bob Nilson Bob Christensen Robert. Under her inspiring leadership a new Boys' Quartet made its debut at the Christmas Concert in San Jose. Both the Boys' and Girls' Glee Clubs won highest acclaim for the outstanding quality of their performances, and the nine girls chosen from the A Capella Choir to make up the Triple Trio con- tributed much to the reputation of our school. SALINAS' PRIDE AND JOY, the ACappella Choir, was lucky to possess as its accompanist, Ruth Blomquist, who, together with June Tombleson and Anna Van Renterghem, did some beautiful solo work. Above and be- yond the wide range of regularly scheduled school productions were the evenings of free entertainment when short plays directed by the students themselves were pre- sented. A further stimulant, as if any were needed, was a trip to San Francisco to watch professionals at work on Pygmalion. To climax the year, Salinas Troupe 501 sponsored a fourteen- hour workshop at San Jose State College, where such problems as casting, directing, makeup, and lighting were discussed by experts in these fields, ending in a play put on by the college students. Icebound launched a season of plays far more diffi- cult than those usually considered belonging to the secondary level, and it, together with those which followed, were as capably handled and of the same caliber as the plays attempted only by colleges. Even the senior play showed the influence of this greater effort. Instead of presenting the usual comedy of adolescents and family life, the senior class selected A Murder Has Been Arranged, which is anything but funny anddepends for success upon the ability of the actors to convey an eeriness bordering on the supernatural. Deverell, the line-breaking of Don Barker, Gary Robinson, and johnny Dias, together with the pass-snagging of Jim Andersen won these out- standing players places in the All-C.C.A.L. lightweight team. Without the ever-present 'IS- sistance from their very able teammates, these boys could not have brought the 1946 Light- weight Championship for Salinas. F . y g H g 'B' w.,.m,,......m... Although early practice games did not look too favorable and the league opener with Watsonville was a loss, the team soon hitched their belts and got down to work. I Irwin Varsit and Lightweight Track TRAINING FOR this year's cindcrmen got off to a fairly early start, but in an early meet with Hollister and Mon- terey the teams did not show too well The varsity was only able to place third while the Babes pulled through with a second. Varsity miler Mannie Quintero started off in fine style and last year's star Paul Garibay showed well. Chief prospects were Lauren Green for shot putt and discus, and Bill Cordes at the high jump, while little Charlie Dake seemed the likliest at the pole vault Surprisingly large turnout for the Babes featured George Marcus and Joe Hootman as good bets. T Baseball and Wrestling THE SALINAS nine swung underway this season with the return of.Prouty and jefferson on the pitching mound and Alexander, Fredricks, Cracknell, and Bellone covering the infield. The first league game didn't prove favorable to the Cowboys, but when they faced Watsonville in the next game, it was another story. With Prouty pitching a no-hit game the Cowboys were off to a very successful season with the score of 5-1. Salinas mat-men started off with high hopes and the return of the con- stant winner, Frank Cortez. Stan Bell showed his own, taking third in the Annual Senior Tournament. A wel- come surprise to Salinas came up with little Sophomore Collins, who pinned some big ones. ,Ictf puts his whole sole into r l'hotographi:r pins wrestlers to ml Fin! THE PAST year has been one of special interest to the girls of Salinas Union High School because of the changes brought about when an en- tirely new teaching staff was intro- duced to the Girls' Gym Department. Greater responsibility was assumed by capable leaders such as Louise Mori and Alzina Taylor, the presidents of the Fall and Spring semesters. Managers were appointed to take charge of each sport, and, though many traditional activities had to be curtailed, the Girls' Athletic Association can well be proud of an active year culminating in the presentation of athletic awards to out- standing members. Spring baseball resembled the summer variety as temperatures soared to unusual heights, but so did the batting averages of the players: so the season was pronounced a great success.
