An exciting experiment is going on in the Chemistry lab. Also, the Office Practice class demands that We see their new mimeograph. ., rwr' ' I , ,,,. t , Y, VI V -:MLN h N i :Lri'.Q, xiii. , r.cr H' TL 1 f' 10 How about a side trip over to the Boys' Foods classes? You'd never be- lieve it but the men', really have this culinary art down pat-just ask the teachers who attended their fac- ulty breakfast! Still in the Home Ec wing we peek in on the Sewing classes. Wfhile the beginners work painstakingly on dresses and peasant aprons, the advanced sewers whip smartly through skirts, jackets, and even coats. Oh! Oh! by the sound of things we're approaching the al- ways popular Typing class. 'All God's chillun' got rhythm'-but un- fortunately not all typists have it! laments Mr. Muncy. With the new phonograph though, who could help swinging out on those musical typing exercises? gi'- Metal shop-a must see! Here We can Watch students hammering and polishing everything from trays to lamps. Look at the book ends that dark haired boy is finishing! Our trip Wouldn't be complete without a duck in and out of the Library-the center of all academic life. No excuse for not studying now with those comfortable new oak study tables and chairs. Hungry? We'd better hurry and get to the Cafeteria. Under the supervision of Mrs. Hansen and Mrs. Thompson several hundred students are served here daily. C2 E? The Art room! Look at all those budding young da Vincis up to their artistic ears in Work. Not only do they supply us with clever posters, programs, and displays but they also find time to do their individual work in water colors and oils. Let's complete our tour in the Science wing. Maybe we can take a look through one of those new super-dupern microscopes in the Biology room or watch the Physics class polarizing light and generating the million volts to run the X-ray tube. 15' 4 ai sa Adam, 41 '11 1 ,J SX ,E - X, Q 215 r, f , , '. . ,f 1 1 'H , 1 ' 'X' 'px I ' ll' r 1 , f I , .'1f',,',' 1, -'il-J risk 1' fl Y Y, 1 'I' I V' V, Y ' 1 : fp, ,I J L 3rQg1'i,p, A V f 1 ,1 ,V . , flfjffaf' ' , ,, if A :w1.11,,1.f wt , 11, V, 1-iff.. .ff ,.. - ' ,-jf gl 1' 1 ff- 1 .It 1 , gf ,H . ,, . if ' 6 P ' .Q 3 5 A is L I '- I , 4' - . rv , ' ' '--141, , 1 . What a life it Was for the Seniors, indeed! In the spring, these privileged characters were given one entire afternoon off for their Informal-much to the envy of the unlucky undergrads! A note of seriousness crept in at the Baccalaureate Services on June 8. Revelry was again in the air, how- ever, when the fourth year students were entertained at the Senior Ball the following night. Not until the strains of the Pro- cessionaln pealed forth on graduation night did some of the Graduates of 1941 realize that they were leaving for good-leaving behind them one of the most successful class records in the history of the school. , 'N uf, ix L ', f'Xx H! A system of announc- ing the outstanding Junior of the Wfeekv was de- visedg also a survey was made of the study habits of all third -year students. Junior salesmen were respon- sible again for feeding the hungry horde at games and dances-thus keeping the rooters happy and incidentally helping to fill the coffers of the class treasury. Not unwelcome was such finanzial aid to this socially minded group! Soft music! Candlelight! Swaying couples! Highlighting the upperclassmen activities. the Junior-Senior Prom climaxed a super year. Help- ing to plan this annual affair were approximately forty-five juniors under the able leadership of the class officers. At the Elks' Hall on May 24--the eventful night-over two hundred lads and lassies danced to the melodious rhythms of the Cal Poly orchestra. PRESIDENT DICK DE MATTOS 4 The old saying- Precious things come in little packages , proved to be true because the freshmen might have been small, but when it came to pep, vigor, and down-right interest, you couldn't beat them. The Student Body welcomed the class of '44 with the traditional Freshman Reception which in- cluded a play in the auditorium, a dance in the cafeteria, refreshments, and a game of baseball. After the reception one little-but Wise-freshman remarked, Fm all for this place called Salinas Highln Under the direction of Pat Allen, the class put on ri most novel dance with the theme of UA Nite At The Racesn. Telegrams to announce entries, a jockey to pick a winner, bugle fan fare to start the races, and a full sized wooden horse-all were a part of the race-track atmosphere. if 1 4 1 .li . . 5 FQ Front Row: NORMAN PRESSLEY, Vice-president, DOROTHY SAKASEGAWA, Secretary. The action of the operetta cen- tered around the legendary spec- tre of the von Landshort Castle in Medieval Europe. Amusing situations developed, however, when the hero masqueraded as the ghastly ghoulu in order to Win the hand of the fair Gretchen. The Cowboys lost their two opening practice games with Turlock and Vallejo by scores of 7-6 and 25-6. Filled with fire and determination, the Cowboys tied the pow- erful Hollister team 7-7, after holding them scoreless until the last three seconds of the game. A week later in a practice game, the Cowboys cracked the Sequoia team 13-8. After that there was no stopping the rugged Salinas Cowboys who trounced Watsonville 32-0, swamped Santa Cruz 35-6, and in the traditional Thanksgiving game, the potent Salinas eleven unmercifully beat Monterey 50-0. The Cowboys showed up surprisingly well considering that material seemed woe- fully inadequate during early season prac- tice. A lot of credit is due to Coach Tiny Hall, who was the wizard of the inspir- ational playing of his Cowboy team. Although playing but three league games, the Salinas Junior Varsity was one of the best eleven in the league at the close of the 1940 season. These boys will be good material for next year's Varsity Champions! Seven days later, after a long tiresome trip to Vallejo, the Cowbabes again lost to a powerful opponent, 6-0. Their brilliant playing, however, kept the spectators on their toes. Filled with fire and determination the Cowbabes returned home to swamp Hollister 14-0 in the first league game of the season. Playing their next game on a terrifically hot afternoon at Watsonville, the team suffered a heart-breaking defeat to Watson- ville, 6-4, during which they threw Watsonville for two touchbacks and kept the ball in their op- ponent's territory during the whole game. Some- how the fellows couldn't climb out of the rut and lost their next conflict to Santa Cruz 13-7. Carmel gave the Cowbabes little trouble as the powerful lightweight eleven unmercifully trounced the Car- mel Varsity 19-0. The Cowbabes rode high and wide over Monterey 6-0 in the final game on Thanks- giving Day. During the season the lightweights scored S0 points against 31 for their opponents. Les Hiserman, a sophomore, displays form and speed which make him a real threat to any opposition in the 440 and 880. Chester Brune, a senior and first-year track- man, also has talent and endurance in the mile events. Vincent Trembley is noted for his showing in the 220 low hurdles. Ken Boles has the muscle it takes to be a real dis- cus man. Rugged Bob Grainger showed the bronze and effort which is needed for a good shot-putter.
