Being the last class to graduate from Washington, we have tried to hold in pictures the things that made Washington dear to us. Under the direction of john Simpson, our editor, with the as- sistance of Ginny Zook, associate editor, and Elaine Thodis, business manager, we feel we have suc- ceeded, in producing a book that can be cherished by all. So it is good-bye to dear old Washington with its creaky halls and its cracked walls. Mr. Aubrey E. Bilger, our sponsor and in- structor, was always ready with advice when we ' reached the proverbial stone wall. Patterson and jobn Simpson The 1951 Mustang football team had a difficult time getting started, losing their first start to the non-league Wichita East Aces by a 28-6 count. The first home game was a CK1- encounter with the McPherson Bullpups in which the Mustangs could not get rolling and were defeated 15-7. The first out of town league game was played in a big rain storm at Clay Center and again the Mustangs were downed 25-7. Coach Dutch Goering's team came to life after that and 'defeated the Abilene Cowboys 12-O in the season's biggest upset. This was the only defeat suffered by the Cowpokes for the season. The Mustangs hit the skids again by losing to the Hutchinson Salt Hawks in the annual Homecoming tilt. This game came out 19-6 for the visitors. Next the Goering crew traveled to Kansas City where they dropped their game to the state's num- ber one team by a 42-7 score. The final two games on the schedule helped the standing for the Mustangs since they won from Junction City 12-6 at Maroon Field. The season's finale, played in a bitter cold, snowy, windy stadi- um at Kansas State was a win for the Maroon clad Salinans by a 7-6 score. This win allowed the Mustangs to tie for third place in the CKL stand- ings with McPherson. 3' Qc 1' Ng' 'F Larry Mullins. Morrison had directed Salina High teams since the 1936-37 season. Fol- lowing the McPherson game on February 8, Morrison was hospitalized with a kidney ailment, and P. L. Phillippi, B team coach, took over the coaching reins for the remainder of the season., Morrison's tenure as coach produced Salina's first state champions, in 1945 and 1950. Morrison coached teams swept or tied for the C.K.L. championship in 12 of the 15 years in which he coached, and since 1941 only one team has finished below first place.
