The fleet officers do their best to steer a clear course to keep too many from being lost at sea. 74a 70444019 Sclaacmez Life on the old schooner, Washington, never grows dull because of the waves of activities during the year. It leaks at times and the boiler doesn't work now and then. but the old boat sails on. At times the sea is rough and the buccaneers mutiny and some have to walk the plank: but all's well now, the joumey is ending, and the buccaneers are retiring. The old boat will sail on and on until some new and better ship replaces it. ti V s h r E p V P 71ou'l Staff' gill Kloaez, Wmdell Wood Wingnut Weoiel feeumez'te .lindgzen lgdlllfddt ..................... ,vfulzeg S. gdlgez Acta: ........... ........ During his reign in this office he has seen many buccaneers cross the bow. His student vigilance and great interest in health- ful living has endeared him to many. Mr. Waring has been, and is now, very active in city, state and country educational circles. During the war he served as Chief Admiral during the absence of Mr. Hawkes. Much of his shore leave is spent listening to good music. He is consid- ered a great Vice-Admiral by his many friends. af 746 Zee: . Mr. Charles E. Hawkes came 1 Salina as Admiral of the Saline Flea in 1938. Since then, he has been a cel tral figure in community affairs. In ac dition to his official capacity as Chie Admiral, he has also found time to leaf and take an active part in importan civic projects. In 1942 he went into the Armj Air Corps where he remained unti 1945. He then retumed to Salina tc resume his duties as Chief. His spare time, from official duties, ist given to promoting, counsel- ing and studying matters pertaining tc the betterment of Salina and the people who live in and near the city. He is popular with his administrators, facul- ty, students, and townspeople, all of whom have much confidence in his abilities. Washington's skipper, Mr. Owen E. Hodgson, has manned this post for 20 years. Before assuming the job of skipper, he was a captain on the Schooner, Washington. Mr. Hodgson says the office is always open, and he is willing to listen to anyone with a problem. He maintains that the ship is for the underclassmen not the underclass- men for the shi p. Off duty, the Skipper enjoys hunting and keeps busy with civic affairs. C. A. Brooks skipper of the frigate. 'Lincoln . has been an officer for many fears. In 1930 he became the head ruler ff the sloop, Roosevelt . The following 'ear he was transferred to the Lincoln , where he has proved to be a top skipper. Off duty time is taken by his duties s District Commissioner of the Boy gcouts. He also strives to out hunt and rut fish his fellow officers and crew nembers. Mr. C. O. Scott has been affiliated with the Salina High Schools for 19 years. beginning his teaching here in 1930. For the past five years Mr. Scott has been Skipper of the Sloop at Roosevelt and teaches one class of 7th grade math. Previously he taught at Lincoln and Washington. Scotty attended KSTC at Emporia and the University of Colorado. The genial Skipper is a great favorite with his faculty and the Roose- velt Sloop. 9 I WASHINGTON FACULTY S ii 5 , ,fur 3 'S it i,,.,lM Dean of Girls Psychology Q I V 5, ay . . ! 4 Y as ,. STUDENT COUNCIL R Navigators, as student council ,members are called, came into being in Salina High many years ago. The navigators are the student representatives unit- ed to guide the destinies of the Schooner Pirates of the good ship Washington. They choose the boy and girl of the month, have charge of homecoming and decorate the halls at Christmas time. Bucca- neers are chosen by their fellow pirates to serve in this important organization, one from each class. OFFICERS Back Row: HARRY WEELBORG, V. Pres.: GE STAUFFER, Secy. Here are opportunities for every brave pirate to have a part in the defensive strategy mapped out to keep the Washington afloat. To the rugged crews comes the challenges to keep the colors aloft. The past year has found the battlers ready. Many adversaries were tossed into the briny deep. 81 POWER When head coach Pete Phillippi and his assistant, Har- old Opdyche, looked over the more than 100 grid aspirants, they spotted ten returning let- termen. With the ten experienced Buccaneer Battlers as a nucle- us, the captains produced a formidable crew. Only on the first and last battles were the' Mustangs forced to sip from the cup of defeat. Weelborg led his mates to a co-championship in the CKL, tieing with Clay Center for the second successive year with a record of five wins and one loss. The Mustangs gave the Tigers that single set back. On these pages are shown the 28 monogram win- ners for the 1948 season which coach Phillippi calls one of his best. THE RECORD FOR 1948 Team Op. NEW RECORD SET Coach Earl Morrison's fighting Mustangs es- blished a record that may last for years by win- ng 20 consecutive games during the 1948-49 sea- tn. After losing the opening game to Emporia, the iustangs came out on the long end of the score in I games before losing to a fighting band of Bull- xps from McPherson in the regional finals by a D to 43 score. Apparently unable to overcome the cold streak om the regional, the Mustang froze before the utchinson Salthawks and dropped the opening :mme in the state by a 36-29 count. Starting without a single letterman, the maroon ad cagers hustled all the way to lay up the best tcord in Salina High history with 20 wins and three sses. MOST VALUABLE ATHLETE When the athletic board met to consider and elect the athlete of the year, the choice proved to be a difficult task. After careful con- sideration, Merlin Iones was selected for this honor. Merlin is the holder of letters in three sports. He has won monograms in football CZD, wrestling CZD and track. He is the state cham- pion wrestler in the 154 pound class. In making the choice for this athletic honor, five factors were considered: training, sportsmanship, morale, record and loyalty. Merlin is also a member of the National Ath- letic Honor Society. In football last fall he started at guard, but when the regular center, Irving Peterson, was injured, Merlin filled the position very creditably for the remainder of the season. His track specialty is high jumping. He also makes good marks in the broad jump.
