After a hotly contested game with the Topeka Trojans in the 1945 State Cage Finals at Emporia, the Fighting Maroons under Coach Earl Morri- son emerged as State AA Basketball Champions, bringing to a close the most successful basketball season in SHS history. This was not only the first time Salina has ever won a State Champ- ionship, but also the first time any Central Kan- sas League team has taken the crown. After winning the CKL Championship, without a de- feat, Salina went on to win the Regional Tour- nament, defeating Manhattan 66 to Z8 and win- ning an overtime battle from Junction City 41 to 37. The following weekend the boys moved down to Hutchinson for the state semi-finals. There they defeated Ark City 41 to 24. Newton was beaten in another overtime by the narrow mar- gin of 39 to 38. When the Morrisonmen came up against El Dorado in the final game of the sec- tional, they were handed a 44 to 42 defeat. With their second place in the semi-finals which qual- ified them for competition in the finals, they moved on to Emporia where they met Columbus, so far undefeated. The Maroon Cagers won easily from Columbus 51 to 40. On Saturday, March 24, came the all-important game with Topeka to decide the Class AA Championship, final tally being 45 to 43 for the Salinans. The Morrisonmen piled up a total of 1208 points during the season of 26 games to their opponents' 871. The city of Salina showed their pride in the champions by letting the sixteen squadmen on April 2 run the city for a day. This they did as well as the job they had done on the basket- ball court. The party given by the city commis- sioners for that evening at Memorial Hall gave all of the students chance to celebrate the victory. z TLCLCiQ Jack I-iPP0ldf Bob Lindeman Bill Case Javelin Relay Team Relay Team Charles Hoffhaus 440 Run TRACK SQUAD: Back Row-- fLeft to Righty Estep, Henry Williams, Tom Handy, Coach Earl Il Cecil Rockhold, Charles Moore, Jack Gillumg For Sam Lewis, Dale Price, Dick Noyce, Wilbur Pfen Wendell Morrison, Third Row- Charles Marsh, Jizz Max Malstrom. After a close race with Wichita East, the Salina wrestlers received second place in the State Tournament this year. This is a fine showing for a school that has had wrestling for only afew years. Salina lost only five falls to opponents and won twenty- nine, which is another fine record. Three Salina wrestlers, Don Sanborn, John Edmiston, and Bill Case, won State Championships in their own weight classes. Before participating in the State Tournament, the eleven entries staged an exhibition bout for fans as the curtain raiser to the Wyandotte-Salina basketball game. With eight of these grapplers return- ing next year, Coach Hitchcock has a promising 1945-46 squad. During the football and basketball seasons the letter-wearers assisted with ushering at games and with other activities. The club also sponsored several projects of their own. They sold tickets for and managed the B Team-Solomon football game last fall and also sponsoreda double- header basketball game early in February. The player identification scoreboard used at Memorial Hall for the basketball games was designed and financed by the club. A new trophy case to be built inside the south entrance doors at Washing- ton is another project of the club. Plans have also Howard, Stanley Englund, Gene oyt, Don Furtickg Fourth Row: hird Row: Everett Nicol, Charles Harold Frazier, Bob Shenewerk, Fred Myers, Pat Lanahan, Sandy hnson. been outlined for placing the name Maroon Field wood memb Sandy tary, head b memb across the top of the stadium in Ken- ark. Starting the year with 31 charter rs, the boys elected the following officers: Fahring, president, Dale Olsen, secre- ob Lindeman, treasurer. Earl Morrison, sketball coach, is sponsor. Thirteen new rs were added as they earned letters in footbal and wrestling during the year: David Shoffn Powell Schul ton, K Morris r, Fred Simmons, Guy Burkholder, Loren , David Jones, Rudy Kramer, Ernest , Don Sanborn, Bob Russel, John Edmis- nneth Porter, Jack Stewart, and George n. Cwloat clfalluablle Jltllllete I ack Lippoldt Being chosen Most Valuable Athlete of the 1945 Class brought to a climax Jack Lippoldt's outstanding sports career at S.H.S. The selection each year is based on Training, Morale, Sportsmanship, Loyalty, and Record. Jack merits the award in all of these respects. The record he has made speaks for itself. Jack has won eight varsity S awards: three in basketball, two in football, and three in track. Save for a foot injury sustained last August, Jack would have won a third letter as a senior in football, bringing.the total to nine awards, a record no athlete has achieved at S. H. S. for a number of years. This injury also caused much doubt as to whether he would be able to play basketball in the 1945 season. However the limb showed improvement during the fall and Jack won a starting position on the cage team. He supplied much of the spark that made Salina the Class AA State Champions. - 11N-.4-. ,--'K -- -v-f-':. '1u- ' 'Q -A-K 1 JH MZLQ L a rum-Hrlw1..... .., ..
