But this old building will always remem- ber 1941-42, for it was then that the Gay Nineties Revue packed them into the Little Theater. The Hour of Charm, inaugurated the year before, continued its work with good results. Another group went to work and presented a brand new project, a liter- ary magazine, composed of student talent. The Student Council, headed by Charles Griffin, came to the front with its new hand- book. Senior Mary jane Lambertson became queen of the gridiron with two lovely attendants. The gain of Clark Carlile and Leslie Neywick compensated for the loss of john Young, W. T. Shoe- maker, and Jack Kelly. Look- ing back at 1941-1942, what will you remember? Miss Cannon becoming a Mrs .... Miss Casady coming from lowa to carry on .,.. Kelly snatched from his frenzied activities to become a private .... Bracke always on the verge of becoming one, and globe-trotting meanwhile .... Fun at noon in the intra- murals .... Mr. Simpson's white rats oozing around on diets Cwell, almost alwaysj . . . . cool green walls . . . . Rumpel- stiltskin froliclcing around on the new stage with red velvet curtains .... All the lads having a furious competition over the paper pick-up. Girl Reserves will long remember the MidfWinter Conference at Emporia .... their Christmas Vespers program .... big money earned in the halls selling candy . . . and the Mother-Daughter Dinner . . . And how can the Hi-Y boys ever forget open house at the YH .... the Father and Son banquet .... the big Forty-Niners' affair . . . . or the line party to Wild Bill Hicock Rides Again .... One of the highlights of the year was high water time .... Scott and Simpson's open water faucets gave Lincoln an extra holiday .... so her teachers strolled around in Washington halls, gloating maliciously over their freedom .,.. but thereyll come a time .... Finishing their first year of actual def bating in Salina High, the 26 debaters and their new coach, Clark Carlile, feel that they have had a moderately successful season. T h e students traveled 2,130 miles to participate in nine out of town debates, The entire team attended two tournaments by chartering a bus. ln seven tournaments Salina High had at least one negative or affirmative team go through undefeated. Cut of a total of 205 de- bates, 130 were won and 71 lost. Those trips enjoyed most were the bus trips and over night tournaments. HMHHEHE MIHIHIHV' l l LY, WVhen plans were started last October for the 1942 edition of The Trail, the staff members did not dream that May of 1942 would find the United States nearing its six months' milestone in XVorld VVar II. The staff plans to dedicate this year's book to S. H. S. graduates who had gone into service for their country was formulated long before the attack on Pearl Harbor. Hence the task of compiling a com- plete and accurate list of those in the many branch es of the fighting services has increased with each passing week. Pl-llLLlPPl 'iPete -Much of the credit for the football record of the Maroons since the fall of '38 goes to this man. Coach Phillippi, com- mercial teacher, was an all-around athlete in college, for he played football, basketball, and baseball at Kansas Wesleyan. His Mustang grid- sters took second in the league last fall, losing only one loop game and tying one. His track and BH basketball squads have also been high ranking in league competition. EARL MCRRISONWNO basketball coach in the history of Salina High has ever equaled the record set up by Mr. Morrison. ln his first five years at the helm, his teams cap- tured two CKL titles and tied for one, won three regional tournaments, and won a second place in a state class AA tourney. Coach Morrison at, tended Kansas State College where he was on both the football and the basketball squads. Besides being head basketball coach and physical educa- tion teacher at Lincoln, he is also assistant foot' ball mentor. L. W. CHESNEY-The job of grooming the green junior high players for varsity service is handled by Mr. Chesney, B team coach. This man, a Washington teacher of social science, played football for Kansas Wesleyan Uni- versity where he took his college work. The Little Maroons, under the direction of Mr. Chesney, have always finished the season with a good record. This year Chesney's Mustangs won one and lost one game, but had four other games scheduled that were rained out. SIDNEY YQUNGQUIST Sid w-Coaching junior high athletics is a tough assignment. Most boys this age have nothing, at first, except the will to play. Mr. Youngquist drills them in rules and funda- mentals of the sport and this helps prepare them for future varsity service. Mr. Youngquist, in his third year as mathematics teacher and junior high football and basketball coach, played football while attending Bethany College at Lindsborg. Youngquist's eleven won one game and lost two last fall in an abbreviated season washed out by the flood. The Mustangs put the bad foot forward in early season non, league play by losing to Russell, Topeka, and Wyandotte. Swinging into league competition, the Maroons downed Abilene 32 to 26 before defeating Emporia 30 to 15 in a non-league contest. Stepping back into league play, the Salina five displayed their capabilities by de. feating I-Ierington, Clay Center, and the rangy Manhattan Indians by impressive margins be- fore losing to an inferior Chapman group, 34 to 31. The junction City squad, made up of giants, were next on the chart for the Mus' tangs and they were big enough to throw a scare into all but the Maroons, who were built for maneuverability-the score, Salina 61, Junction City 33, with Charley Lear col- lecting 21. A championship squad will have its ups and down and Salina lost to McPherson 31 to 26, defeated Junction City 30 to 21, and then lost again to McPherson 41 to 30. The Mustangs made a brilliant finish, however, by defeating Manhattan, Herington, Clay Center, and Abilene. McPherson, the other half of the championship title, lost to junction City, Manhattan, and Abilene. The Mustangs es- tablished another record in point getting by clipping off 599 in league play against their opponents' 412. Lear, forward, collected 131 points in league play to top individual scorers with a 9.3 average. The Maroons were elim- inated by Dodge City in the first game of the regional 36 to 35. I yelped blindly and she screamed. I-Ier dash- ed from the house and ran toward us, gathering rocks as he came, My big brother did the same. Stones and names flew, windows crashed. My sister joined my side to battle wildly against the girl's mother, who was leaning from her kitchen window, exhorting her side, Our dining room win- dow popped open and my mother came out feet first, and immediately the other mother ran out to do personal affront. A stray neighbor or two joined us, and our two family dogs, usually the best of friends, began to fight savagely, attacking any and everyone. I I don't know quite what ever happened to the battle after that . . . the little girl and I got bored and went into the back yard to make mud pies. I know what you're thinking: no such battle could ever occur in real life. But this one did. It had been simmering for years, and after that it boiled for several more. These six years of high school have reafly ffashed by How vrell we remember those good ole days. Remember when Shirley Hagler had a crush on Jay Hines? That was when Joan Goffee was still living here. By the way, remember the second hour English class? Miss Lito- wich was really swell, wasn't she? Shank and Mowery were rivals for Burney then and Don Price had eyes for Barbara Ba'dWin only. Those were the days at Roosevelt. Then we were freshmen and listened to Bracke's songs. Oh yes, VVee Fincher skipped school for the first time and got caught. That was the time when Pat Winn and Claude Pax- ton had it bad. Mildred Hansen was here and my, did the Helfrick and 'hearts ever flutter. Mary Kay George Harvey were that way too. My, my-what we don't remember. Sophomore year came next and so did Skeeter Curtis. That was Kelly's first year, too. The speech class just overflowed with students, Dean Ayers impersonated Mr. Bracke in freshman assembly and what didn't happen then. Everybody was thrilled to death about Tiger House. Gee, wasn't it just wonderful. Remember the leap year dance. More fun. Then we were juniors. My, but we felt grown up. Shiiley Gross arrived and Cory thought he had found his true love. Remem- ber her birthday party? Wonderful to have everything so formal. Wee Fincher got the lead in June Mad and everyone just had to see it And then prom-wasn't it just won- derful tc march in and have so many people watching us. Ge: but time does fly. Now we are seniors. Remember Chocky Fuerst and the farewell party for her. Then Kelly was drafted and everyone was so sad and c'asses were cut just to see him off-I cried too. Then Bracke also left. Why did we have to have a war any- way. Then something happened to the friend- ship of Banker and Heller. VVonder What? Then we had the junior-senior party and boy, did we have fun. Then almost before we knew it, thc year was over. The Baccalaureate ser- vices .ind Class Day and then Commencement and so another class of Salina Hi has taken its final curtain call. Love, -J ere.
