E llsworth 5311113 Herington D9-limi Emporia Salina Lindsborg Salina Hutchinson Salina Abilene Brilliantly finishing three years on the first team, Dee was placed on the C. K. L all stars his last two years and was also named captain of this mythical eleven in his last year. His smashing, driving, spectacular ball-carrying, his accurate passing, and his fine kicking made Buell one of the best players ever to Wear a Mai-0011 Suit. PATCHEN, CENTER, SENIOR , Characterized by his fiery winning spirit, 'fRed played in every same and finished his second year at the pivot post. Ed's faultless passingdid much to give Salina backs confidence in themselves. A mainstay on the defense and a constant fighter, Ed was, in the opinion of the Topeka High NVorld's Sport staff, the best center in the state. MARK DODGE, FULLBACK, SENIOR In the McPherson same Mark suffered a fractured shoulder which kept him out of many of the mid-season games. Mark was a big, battering-ram typ eof player and could always be counted on to fret those needed yards. Playing several minutes with a fractured shoulder, as he did in the McPherson game, shows that Mark would never quit until the final gun sounded. CVCIL SCROGGINS, GUARD, SENIOR Cecil can truthfully be called the best guard that has played in the C. K. L. and one of the best in the state. His: speed, weight, and consistency make f'Scrog a fine interference runner. De- fensively Soros could knife thru the opposing line with unbelievable speed. In addition to be- ing chosen C, K, L. guard, Cecil captained Salina in the final game with Abilene. H521 l OO'll BAlL.lL. THE TRAIL 1934 C. K. ll... ALLSTARS First Team Boughton, Endg Van Cleef, Tackle Buell, Halfback: Kathary, Fullback SCCOIIJ Team Glazier, Tackle HOB WILLIS, END, SENIOR Bob gained a first team berth when a junior and played as a regular during his senior year. He made up what he lacked in speed by his weight and his ability to anticipate opponents plays. An excellent blocker and a consistent defensive player, Bob gave fine exhibitions of end-play in the Topeka and Hutchinson games. He always showed lots of scrap and plenty of fight. NORB BOUGHTON, END, SENIOR Undoubtedly Norb was the best end in the C. K. L. Although he was light, he had the speed and endurance that made him a successful end. Norb was also a fine blocker, and as a defensive player, there was none better in the league. He always played consistent ball and with the fire and enthusiasm that acted as a stimulus to keep up the team's morale. Norb was chosen on the C. K. L. team. OTHEL ME.-XDOVVS, FULLBACK, SENIOR Although he was handicapped by lack of height. Meadows used his extraordinary SDE-ed and drive with telling results. Othell had an uncanny ability to dfidge thru the smallest hole in the opponents line. He was probably the best blocker in the backfield. His repeated gains in the Ellsworth game aided much in annexing this vit-tory for the Maroons. LEE MARSHALL, END, SENIOR Lee did not see as much service in the games as some of the other end candidatesg but, never- theless, he always gave his best whether inthe games or on the practice field. Lee was a. hard man to block out of a play. CHESTER ROTROCK, END, SENIOR Chet was a valuable reserve and 4-ould be counted on to fight his hardest when placed in a. game. He rarely missed a night of prftf-tice and always played commendable ball. Al- I63l THE TRAIL 1934 though not an outstanding blocker, Chet was a good defensive player. XRMWELL LUNDSTROM, GUARD, SENIOR Although he was the lightest of the guards, Lundstrom saw more service at right guard than the other candidates for this position. Vvhat Swede lacked in size he made up in his will- ingness and his scrapping type of defense pl ay. Swede spilled many a ball-lugger in his tracks by his ability to smash through the opponent's line. DAN TAPPAN, GUARD, SENIOR After playing last year on Herington's tetani, Dan moved to Salina and was converted from a tackle to a guard. He did not always rate a first team position, but he could be counted on to fill any gap in the line and fill it to the best of his ability. L-ILL COST, GUARD, SENIOR Bill, like Lundstrom, was light for a guard position, but his lack of weight did not keep him from seeing a lot of service. Bill was kept out of the early games because of an infected arm, but near the end of the season he developed into a fine, defensive player and running guard. JOHN CALDVVELL, TACKLE, SENIOR Long John saw much action in the early sea son games and was one of the hardest men on the squad to block out of a play. No one tried h arder or wanted to win more than John. He never complained but silently gave his best. This is Johnn's fourth year of football, and he has made a place on the squad for himself by hard, persistent work. LARL VAN CLEEF. TACKLE, JUNIOR Van like Glazier, was a 210 pound tackle f rom last year's B team. Earl started the season at guard but was later shifted to tackle, a position he filled so well he was chosen on the C. K. L, All-Stars, Earl was the place kicker of the team. He should be the nucleus of the Ma.- roon's line next year. I LVIN REED TACKLE, JUNIOR No one dn the squad had more pep and enthusiagm than Fat. He topped the scale at over 200 pounds, and although he did not hold a regular berth, he could always be counted on to do his best. Next year Elvin will be hard to keep off the first team. WVAYNE YORDY, QUARTERBACK, JUNIOR Assigned the signal calling post, Wayne was often called upon to run the team. His sense of leadership made him'a fine field general. He was also a good passer and kicker. Misfortune overtook Yordy near the last of the season and inflicted a knee injury, which kept him Out of the Abilene game HARTZELL BOYDSON, HALFBACK, SOPHOMORE Hartz, a sophomore, was ehe fastest of the backfield men on the squad- B0YdSfO11 made many sensational twisting runs and was a fine kicker and passer. In the Ellsworth game I-Iartzell was at his best, making two long runs for touchdowns. With two more YBHPS to play Hartzell should develop into one of the best ba1l-luggers in the C. K. L. ACK GLAZIER TACKLE, JUNIOR Coming up from last year's B team, Jack, after several games became a regular. He was exceptionally fast for a 200 pound player, and with this speed and weight he became one of the team's most aggressive linemen. Jack was placed on the C. K. L. Second Team and should do much to make nextyear's team a success. LYICRETT JUKES, FULLBACK, JUNlOR 'XVith no previous experience Jukes developed into a very valuable reserve as the season ad- vanced. His kicking, defensive play, and line plunging were far above the average. Everett got his first real chance to perform in the Hutchinson game and gave an outstanding perform.. ance, scoring both touchdowns. L EORGE BUELL, HALFBACK, JUNIOR George Showed that his brother, Dee, hadn't monopolized all the football talent in the Bueli family. In the Chapman game Georges kicking was the deciding factor in scoring a Salina vic- tory. With a year's growth and experience, George should be a great aid to the 1934 Salina team. IIM CANNON. HALFBACK, SENIOR Jim was one of the most capable reserve backs. VVhen he was placed in a game .Tim always worked hard, carrying the ball, leading interference, and doing all he could. .lim was hindered all year by a hip injury, but he always atte nded practice and did his utmost for the good of the team. .AEORGE KATHARY. T-TALFBACK, SENIOR George, a second year man, won distinction for himself as a great backfield player. He was by far the best pass-receiver in the state and in the Abilene game spectacularly received a. fifty yard pass for a touchdown. For his stellar play on the defense and his fine blocking on the offense, George was picked as a first string man on the mythical C. K. L. All-Star team. 1 ILL WOLFSON, MANAGER, SENIOR Overflowing with pep and school spirit, Bill found his chance to serve the football team as man- ager and filled this position to the satisfaction of every one connected with the team. Bill's optimism and determination to win did much to keep up the team's morale. AFK CLARK, .ASSISTANT MANAGER, SOPHO MORE Jack was Bill's assistant and was quick to learn the duties of football management. Jack was a valuable asset to the team and is capable of taking over the management next year. 1641 Tl-I E TRAI I. 1934 FOOTBALLHAHSQUAD Coach Douglass Jukes .Marshall Kathary Van Cleef Caldwell Dodge Reed Buell Glazier Patchen Tappan I3-oydston Aassistant---Coach Orendorff Jared Cannon Rotrock Boughton Alllsiedt Cost Lundstrom Scroggins Magerkurth Yordy Buell Yarcho Bays Bell Cassell Sare Robison Henry Miller Scott Brown Koster Assistant Manager Clark Manager Vkfolfson 5 F0OTBALLMH9SQUAD Adams Linvh Hall Farm'-r Crowther Turner Willey Peek Brnuharcl Padfield Plunkett .l. LaRue Sanford Fisher It 651 THE TRAIL 1934 GEORGE KATHARY, SENIOR, GUARD Kathary was one of the most spectacular floormen of the C. K. L. Playing the first part of the season at forward and playing superb ball. he was transferred to the vacant guard post where he played equally well. George possessed the best basket eye of any player -on the team. He was noted for his center shots as well as those from the side. By his spectacular playing throughout the season, he was chosen to pilot the team through the Regional and State tourneys. George was a two-letter man and was made captain of the C. K. L. All-Star second team. CECIL SCROGGINS, SENIOR, GUARD Cecil, playing his second year on the fir't team. was by far the best guard in the Central Kansas League. All year Scroggins did not meet his equal in the art of re- covering rebounds. The assignment of covering the outstanding players of the oppos- ing teams fell on Scroggs shoulders, and in addition to filling this assignment, he added many points to the score. Besides being chosen for the C. K. L. All-Stars, he received the highest honor that can come to a basketball player, that of being chosen on the All-State Honor Roll. ED PATCHEN, SENIOR, FORWARD Whether at a forward or guard berth, Ei always played a steady consistent type of ball. Red did not, in any way, let his lack of weight prevent him from playing an untiring game. His leadership gained for him the captaincy in the majority of the seasons games and his timely shooting gave him the honor of being the team's leading scorer. Although Ed was not extremely fast, he used his four years of experience to overcome this handicap and to steady the team. ALLEN DODGE, SENIOR, CENTER Al played alternately at center and guard and plaved invaluable ball at both posi- tions. Defensively Al was superior, being assigned to guard the high-scoring centers of the Central Kansas League and holding them to few points. Through the season Al was not much of .a scoring threat until the Regional and State tournaments when he added much to the offensive punch of the five. By his splendid cooperation and his ability to retrieve rebounds, he was often indirectly responsible for many of Salina's scores. JOHN CALDWELL, SENIOR, CENTER There has never been an athlete in Salina High School who has worked so hard and so untiring as John. Although he did not see a great de.al of action, he always had the same undaunted spirit. John's play was neither sensational nor fast, but his advantageous height was an important factor in controlling the tip. Long John when inserted into the game always added several pointsto the score. This is John's first letter in basketball. i661 W TH E TRAIL 1934i GEORGE BUELL, JUNIOR, FORWARD George was a valuable cog in the Maroon machine through his all-around play and his uncanny ability to sink one-handed shots from any conceivable position. After the first few games he won a place on the first team and was a regular through the rest of the season. Buell was a fine dribbler and ball hustler and could send the ball through the loop with either or both hands. George should lead the offensive attack of the Salina Five next season. OTIS BEACH, SENIOR, FORWARD Coming to Salina from Iola, Otis developed into a valuable player, who always gave his best when placed in a game. Beach's small stature was overcome by his amaz- ing speed, drive, and accurate passing. He rarely missed a night of practice, and in every way he could, tried to improve the team. Whether in the game or on the bench, this diminutive forward did all in his power to bring victory to the Maroon quintet. VANCE MILLER, JUNIOR, CENTER X Returning to Salina after a year's absence in Topeka where he was a member of the sophomore team, Vance became one of the leading center aspirants. Because of his lack of experience Vance was not always in the starting lineup, but he improved so rapidly that he gained a starting position in the Regional tournament where he played outstandingly and used his height to the best advantage of the team. Vance will be eligible for competition next year and should have a very successful season. JOHN SHAVER, JUNIOR, FORWARD Through most of the early games of the season John did not play much, but in the Herington game he played such excellent ball that he was often placed in the games. Possessed with stamina and a fighting spirit, John was always scrapping desperately to annex a victory. His love for action and his reliable aggressive manner were characteristic of his play. With a year's experience John should be a mainstay of next year's team. l67l THE TRAIL 1934 BASKETBALL SQUAD Coach Uhrlaub, Wolfson, Clark, Palmer, McDonald, Crowthers, Boydston, Currier, Lundstrom, Coach Douglass.
