To this record has been added for 1920 thirty-two letters awarded for football, basketball, track, and debate--the largest single ,group of letter men added in any one year. This fact alone speaks for the spirit and success of the school year that has just closed. Letter men are leaders in school life. They stand apart from the average student for they are the representatives of the school on the athletic field, the gymnasium court, and the debate platform, and their loyalty and skill bring honor to the school. They win the coveted letter by long gruelling' hours of pratice supplemented to necessary school work for passing grades. HIC HABIT is indebted to members of the jouralism class for the drawings that have made this 1920 commencement issue at- tractive. The panels for class and organization pictures, form- erly designed by outside talent, were drawn and lettered this year by Oscar Seitz assisted by Ronald Terry. The school nev- er feels the need of an art depart- ment more than when work on the annual begins. Talent in the journalism class solved the problem of how to make the 1920 annual attractive. Seitz and Terry did it. 'Thus Rookie learned to save. And, abov: all, Rookie found out that all times and in certain cases he was not the only pebble on the beach. The second oyster that Rookie gradually lad- led out of the kettle was character. To develop his brain and in- crease the boundaries of his knovv- ledge, Rookie found that the army was a Wonder. He saw peo- pleg he savv countriesg he learned how to signalg to telegraphg to shoot arifleg to march: to love his country. It was a slippery oyster of benefit in the shape of mental developement that Rook- ie forked out with the tool of study from the cauldron. Such were the gains that Rookie reaped from a year's service in the U. S. Army. He is every man vvho enlists in a like manner. Every man learned what Rookie didg some knew more. Two mem- bership campaigns were held as usual, one in September and one after the Christmas holidays. As school was uninterrupted by enforced vacations, the associa- tion was able to hold regular meetings this year. During the first semester meetings were held at noon, but owing to the large group the noon sessions added to the already crowded cafeteria, the time of meeting was changed fo? the second semester to alter- nate Wetliiesdayf evenings. THE HABIT 85 A Senior Soliloquy 1 sit me down to cogitate on future occupations: I want to be both gay and great, and famed thruout the nation. I'cI like to be a steeple-jack and sky- lark on a steepleg, I'd see'f the hells were out of whack: I'd awe the earth-hound people. But if I fell, I'd crack my dome or break my swan-like neck. I think I'II linger near the loam, my mug I'd hate to wreck. A doctor's life is free and rich, he helps all sickly mortals, hut in hc makes a little hitch they view the pearly portals. A lawyer rakes in heau- coup jack: he protits on each case. The coin rolls in by bale and stack, he elo- cutes with grace. A teacher's life is glad and free, he makes the children learn. The coin he gets would not suit me. You don't get half you earn. A preacher's life is most benign. He does a world of good. A soldier has a lovely time: he gets free clothes and food. But all the same their pay is punk: they never can live high. This altruism stuff is bunk, when the wolf howls ever high. An author has a lovely time tif he can sell his booksj and for his books he'lI get one diinegtlf th' editor likes his Iooksl. I'II never be a poet, nor yet a journ- alist. I may yet in time out-grow it, but l'II be a Bolshevist. Shes a senior: her manner is charming, Her effect on the boys is alarming, They worry and fret, I And their lessons can't get, But, really, her smile is disarming.
