'lllllllll lillllllllll The 1955-56 Student Council began the year in August by selling ads for the football programs. These were the largest, free programs in the high schools of Colorado. Georgia Sweeney, Diana Warren, Karen Zarske, Barbara Watson and Dennis Hoover represented Salida at the first San Luis Valley meeting, which was held at Sargents Consolidated on September 20. Meetings were held in September, December, March and May. Salida was host to the last one. One project of the Valley Association was the talent assemblies which were held in january. Various schools in the associ- ation contributed acts to three different programs, each of which gave performances in several schools. The proceeds from these assemblies were turned over to the polio drive. The Student Council endeavored to keep the lawn clean throughout the year. Homecoming was the next big responsibility of the Student Council. The Home- coming football game was with Alamosa on the 7th of October. The festivities, which the Student Council organized, were the selection of a Queen, who was Ramona Trujillo, a pep rally and giant bonfire, at which time Alamosa was burned in effigy, a snake dance which wound its way through the town, a free show at the theater for all who attended the pep rally and the lighting of the S on Mt. Tenderfoot. During the year, the Student Council sponsored some of the dances which were held after the football and basketball games. The State Student Council meeting was held in Denver on October 10 and 11. Georgia Sweeney and Nancy Donnohue admirably represented Salida. They brought back many good ideas to the Council, which enabled the Council to better serve the students. Pueblo was the site of the District Student Council meeting on November 10. Diana Warren, Karen Zarske, Sandy Cowan, Barbara Watson, and Dennis Hoover went to the meeting and took a big part in it. Karen Zarske led a discussion group and Diana Warren was the recording secretary. The delegates heard a discussion about the moral and spiritual values among teenagers, which was very thought provoking. The ideas from this discussion aided the Senior members of the Council-Garry Ritchie, Jim Kane, Diana Warren, Georgia Sweeney, Karen Zarske and Lester Alway- when the presented a panel discussion of the same subject over the radio. They ex- plained the moral and spiritual values as they are today among teenagers. As in years past, the Student Council decorated a big tree in the main hall and one small tree on each landing at Christmas time. They also had the big tree outside the school lit. Student Council organized the annual exchange assembly with Alamosa. It was given on january 15 in conjunction with the Valley exchange assembly with Saguache. Center in turn came to Salida with a very good assembly. A 20 point program was adopted in November. It put forth 10 activities that the Student Council is already doing and 10 projects that the Student Council hopes to do for the betterment of the school. The Council used the same merit system for determining merit winners this year. An extremely busy year was capped by a picnic for old and new members of the Student Council.
