Kansas State Teachers Colorado University McKinley Roosevelt Foundation 1879 ------------ 1954 This year of 1953-54 marks the 75th anniversary of the coming of schools to Salida. The first attempt at formal schooling in the community was a little. one room school that ran for 3 months during the fall of 1879. Miss Jennie Smith had a number of pupils from the lst to 8th grade, which met in an empty store building down town. Later a small stone building was built where McCray school now stands with the original stones still being visi- ble on the south of the present structure. As the school enrollment grew a high school was built about 1890 The building that is now the Longfellow grade school was used for that purpose till 1910 when the present Sr High was erected and Longfellow became exclusively an elementary school In 1922 the Jr High the shop and the gym were added to the system and inthe Thirties both McCray and Longfellow were extensively remodeled In the 75 year period the schools have grown from a one room school to the present 44 teacher institution that now enrolls about 1 100 pupils offering a complete 13 year school mg including kzndergartens The high school has been accredited by the North Central assoc iation since 1908 To the memory of the students and teachers who have been part of the Salida system during the past 75 years the edition of Le Resume 15 affectionately dedicated BOARD OF EDUCATION S Rush P es J E Stewart V Pres G E Lines Sec W N Baird Treas W E Burleson D L Crawford Dr E C 6:1 l -me P1 F44 'fr my ' Budd High School 1892 Q vm f I , A lull f ' r F' HH ' ' ' w. . -. rx., .21 Hi Magi, g IE g , I , V ' , in .
