Student Councll ith Jerry Berry headlng the student councll, James Sheehan as Vice Presldent, and 0 kim, pat Frayser serving as Secretary Treasurer, the student counc1l r'::T had a very successful year The 1n1tial project of the year was the sale of activ1ty tlckets and the changing of the football program The football programs were larger than pT6V1OUS ones w1th illustrated covers Many compliments were received on them This commlttee was headed by Carroll Keifert A new system was tr1ed wlth the auditorlum t1cket A booklet containing ten tickets was sold In the event that there were more than ten assemblies or the booklet was lost, the regular adm1ss1on had to be pald At the annual conventlon of the state student counclls held in Fort Collins on December 5 and 6 132559 James Sheehan preslded as state presxdent The other mem bers representing the Salida student councll were Jerry Berry, Pat Frayser and Bill Campbell The rad1o pro gram These Kids of Ours' was broadcast from the student ballroom in Fort Collins by remote control through KGA ln Denver James Sheehan was named 'Champ of the Weekn on thls program The student councll helped the Pep club with the Homecoming festivities by buying the corsages for the Queen and her attendants, and by giving the prlzes for the floats in the parade Tne maln project of the year for the student COUHC1l was initiatlng the mer1t system The merlt system was the result of many hours work by both the student councll and the faculty The purpose of the mer1t system was to better tne school by encouraglng the students to do better class work, and to give tH9m merits for work done ln extra activ1ties James Sheehan headed the com11ttee Through the cooperatlon of the student COUHC1l, the Sallda Elks were aga1n able to sponsor dances every month for the students when the Chrlstmas season arrlved, the halls in the high school were decorated. ' .Vw ' TA P. , 5 f , , H l W A IJ f , +-' 5 :' ' 'I X , u I' ULU' 'wk jf K--f-'1 .1 1 -1' y V 1 4 ' K K 1 2 3, rf A V I ,I , , . 9 m K SENIOR CLASS Representing the class of 1950 on the Student council during 1946 47 were David David off Bob Sympson and Jerry Berry during 1947 48 were Pat Frayser Jerry Berry, and Jimmy Sheehan during 1948 49 were .Terry Berry Pat Frayser Frances Salerno and Jimmy Sheehan during 1949 50 were Pat Frayser Frances Salerno James Sheehan Bob Sympson and Carroll Keifert Eleanor Gabardi set another record for the Class of 1950 when she was elected Home coming Queen for the second straight year This was the first time in the history of Salida high that a girl was ever named Homecoming Queen two years in succession Barbara Britton was voted by her classmates to be the semor candidate for Queen of the Winter Festival T Alveda Carignan went the honor of being the outstanding girl of her class This came as result of a vote by the class and a test At the annual Awards Assembly she was presented with the local DAR award Because they ranked first and second in the class as far as grades were concerned Dorothy Watts was Valedictorian and Alma Spriggs was Salutatorlan Alma Spriggs Marion etta Spriggs and Eleanor Gabardi were Co editors of the 1950 annual For the first semester Frances Salerno was editor of the Tenderfoot, and Alveda Carignan was the editor for the second semester Late in February the Senior Class Play Arsenic and Old Lace was presented before Brown Bob Sy mpson Louis Argys Lloyd Todd Richard Wood Jim Sheehan Joan Slmons Pete Salerno Frances Salerno Eddie Trujillo Shirley Higginson and Dave Lmes In the field of athletics the Class of 1950 was outstanding Many of the boys contributed to the success of the football basketball and track teams The results of the annual Elks Scholarship contest for seniors were First place Frances Salerno who won S50 Second Alma Spriggs, S30 Third Dick Bratton, S20 and in fourth place were Alveda Carignan and James Sheehan who each won S10 The tests were also entered in the Elks state contest The Class of 50 started with 109 members by the time they were sophomores there were 91 The class decreased to 79 in their Junior year and had approximately 68 in 1950 The class motto was United we stand divided we fall The orchid was the class flower purple and white were the colors The senior pictures are as of January 10 1950 it does not necessarily mean that they are the graduating seniors a v 3 A ' v . 3 I ' .Yu 1 J ' 5 . TENNIS The Spartan Tennis team under the direction of Bill Andreas won from Monte Vista and lost to Florence ' , su ' C o For the first time in history, the thinclads took ':..the District L 9 9 ...L X!! fl is N STM Under the capable direction of Charles Teghtmeyer, band director, the band which this year consisted of 51+ students, had a very suc- cessful year. During the year the band presented two concerts that were attended by good sized audiences. Both concerts were well received Through the funds derived from the band concerts and donations from the school board and frmends, a new oboe was purchased for the band This year many new band selections were obtained Also, among the new additions to the band department was a cabinet to file music The cabinet was made by the wood shop boys under the direction of John Burgzergehop instructor When spirit was needed to odd to a parade, athletic contest, or any other event, the band was always ready to lend its support Throughout the year they appeared in parades of all types, at football games, and pep band, made-up of students from the band, appeared at home basketball games. Members of the band attended a 'band clinic held at Sargents Consolidated School during the winter Also, individual members of the band made many public appearances, and in the spring they attended a festival held at Monte Vista. To conclude their activities for the year the annual Salida band clinic, under the guest director, George Domson, was held in the Spring Under the leadership of Charles Teghtmeyer, the orchestra grew to 13 members the largest orchestra Salida High' ies had innmyears. During the year the orchestra played for the Dramatics club plays Junior Class play, Senior Class play, and Spartan Sparkles, and made several radio appearances. In January the students held a Jitney lunch to aid them in buying new music and several new music stands As a string ensemble the members ef the orchestra went te Monte Vista for a Spring Festival At the first meeting of the F. H A., Betty Pachecowan elected president Lila Dominguez was elected vice-president, and Mary Vigil secretary treasurer Mrs Mary Wonder was the sponsor. To raise money the club sold Christmas cards and sponsored a candy sale. During the first semester a Christmas party was enjoyed by the members For a second semester project an assembly was given by the club. Throughout the year various crafts were worked en. A faculty tea was given both semesters The club contributed to thelerld Clildrens Christmas Festival For the International Relations Project, the members of the club carried on correspondence with girls from other countries. For each of the hone games the club decorated the goal pests. A a few of the games the club sold balloons. Spartan mittens and pins were sold during the year In order to raise money to carry on the club's activities, a jitney lunch was sponsored Once again the Spartanettes had charge of Homecoming The four officers of the club were elected by their fellow students as candi dates for the Homecoming Queen The honor of being Homecoming Queen was won by Eleanor Gabardi In the spring the annual Sadie Hawkins dance was again e aonsored by the club.
