This organization has gone on from year to year, made up of the Junior and Senior girls of the School under the leadership of Miss Mos- grove. During the year the girls gave a tea for the new members and a Washing- ton's Birthday assembly. GIRL RESERVES The Girl Reserves began the year with a 100 per cent active membership. Some of the program themes were: The Girl and Her Family, Church and Community. At the Christmas Holidays the girls went to different places and sang Christ- mas Carols. A Soon after this the club enjoyed a party with the Hi Y. January 16 the girls enjoyed a tea. April 17 there was special music and a play review given for the girls. May ll the annual Mother-Daughter Tea was held at which time the new' officers were installed. The 'otiicers for the past year have been: President, Katharine Darby, Vice President, Program Chairman, Harriett Andersong Secretary, Mildred Beaure- gardg Treasurer. Louise Curfman: Musician, Lillian Vaughn. The Girl Reserve Club is sponsored by Miss Skinner. COMMERCIAL CLUB The purpose of the Commercial Club is to create more interest in commercial work. ACTIVITIES DEBATE CLUB Late in November, the debate club started work with Frank Massard as President, Franklin Ragan as Secretary, and Mr. Soles, sponsor. Other mem- bers of the club were Isabelle Davenport, and Thomas Preecs, The state sub- ject selected for debate was Resolved: That the Federal Government should adopt the policy of equalizing educational opportunities by means of annual grants to the several states for public elementary and secondary education. Frank Massard and Franklin Ragan upheld the affirmative of the question 5 Isabelle Davenport and Thomas Preecs, the negative. Our negative team met the Leadville affirmative team here February 9. Attorney W. S. Rush acted as judge. Leadville received the decision. The return debate was held in Leadville February 16. Several other debates were scheduled with Florence and our local Public Speaking Class. HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS GLEE CLUB Last year the Glee Club entered the music contest in Alamosa and received! 2. rating of excellent. Money was raised to enter the contest this year from the! returns of the operetta Hansel and Gretel, sponsored by the Glee Club and from various candy sales. There was a great increase in membership this year as the number has been almost doubled. A Christmas Carol Service was held at the Methodist Church December 19, 1934, consisting of numbers from the Junior High Boys and Junior High Girls Glee Club, High School Glee Club and a few grade school children. Hansel and Gretel, staged in the High School auditorium February 15, was adapted from the operetta of E. I-Iumperdinck. Pianist-RUTH PENNELL. HIGH SCHOOL ORCHESTRA The high school orchestra under the direction of Mr. Mobeck has met each. Tuesday and Thursday during the school year. The organization numbered four- teen pieces. Franklin Ragan was student director. The orchestra played several numbers before the junior play. Q BACCALAUREATE SERVICE Baccalaureate services for the Class of 1935 are to be held Sunday evening, May 19 in the high school auditorium. The Rev. George Oakes will deliver the sermon assisted by other local ministers. The senior class, as is the usual cus- tom, will attend in a body.

ACTIVITIES THE SALIDA HIGH SCHOOL DRAMATIC CLUB The High School Dramatic Club was reorganized this year under the spon- sorship of Miss VV ilfma Scott. New members for the club were selected by means of Try-Outs. There are seventeen members in the club. F RANGES HUNT The club presented a one-act play Neighbours by Zona Gale in assembly March 8, which was a serious comedy. During the year, the club studied stage sets and furniture arrangement. SALIDA HIGH SCHOOL BAND The organization of a Salida High School band was started in 1928 by Mr. Bakke and Mr. Winters. Mr. Long was the next director and after he left. the band was in charge of Mr. Njaa for a short time after which Mr. Mobeck, then leader of the municipal band, was named as director. The band has grown from a small organization to the .present size of nearly' fifty pieces. Originally the band was separated into a beginners' and an ad- vanced band but the groups were combined some time ago. In 1932 a band boosters association was -organized to assist the young mu- sicians. Purple and -white emblems were bought and near the close of last year, a party was held for the band members by the boosters club. The organization miarkes possible the trips each year to the valley music contests. Last year the band entered the San Luis Valley music contest and won a rating of excellent. The band also entered the contest again this year in Ala- mosa. Harriett Anderson has been drum major and Franklin Ragan student! director this year. THE SPARTANVITIQS The Spartanite Club, organized for the promotion of pep and school spirit. has grown from a membership of seventy-hve to tivo hundred-fifty. The club met in September and elected their president, Theodore Benjovsky, with Miss VVo0dward acting as sponsor. A membership into the club was one dollar, which included membership to the club and admission to all the conference games played at home. The Spartanites put on various exhibitions at the halves of the foot- ball and' basketball games. The exhibitions were novel and showed hard work on the part of the club. The organization has succeeded in arousing interest in high school athletics as well as better attendance at the games.
