S. H. S. BAND The High School Band of 37 members met at the first of the year with W. Mobeck as director. The following officers for the year were elected: Mary Ellen Patano. drllm major, Lawrence Welch, student director 5 Harry Clagett, librarian 3 Roger Aude, president. The band played at every home football game and also at the Canon game at Canon. On January 27, the organization, A. of M.C.H. and A, which was discon- tinuing, presented to the band a sousaphone. Through the cooperation of the town people a band boosters organization was formed to help the band. do something that has been a dream long wished by every one of us, namely entering the San Luis Valley Meet at Alamosa. Our Fourth Annual Band Concert was given April 6, at this time we appeared in our new sweaters received from the Band Boosters Club. The band attended the San Luis Valley meet April 21. DEBATE Efrly in October the debate club started work with Nina Massard as President, Mary Ellen Patano as secretary, and Mr. Soles as sponsor. Other members of the club were Mary Lou Mac'Phail, Lawrence Welch, and Rita Johnson. The club met the Leadville teams as well as two teams from Florence. The club won four debates. March 16 the five members motored to Pueblo for the district tournament. Here the team woll two debates and lost two. CDMMEIQCIAL CLUI3 The Commercial Club year started with Zita Feretti as Presidentg Abel Madrid Vice Presidentg Ruth Stevens, Secretary, Alta Klarenbach, Treasurerg and .Tune Wright Reporter. Several parties were enjoyed during the term. At the beginning of the second term officers were chosen as follows:Ruth Stevens President 3 June Wright, Vice President g Iyone McDonald, Treasurer, Stella McMullen, Secretary. The year ended with a picnic at Wellsville. Mr. Rouse acted as sponsor. SIDAIQTANITES At the opening of the basketball season a new pep club was formed. A contest was held and the name chosen for the organization 'was t'Spartanites. Murl McJunkil1 was elected president and George Williams secretary. Miss Woodward acted as spon- sor. The club hrd a membership of about seventy-five. It is hoped that the group will be even larger in future years. H I-Y The Hi-Y of Salida met in September with Mr. Burgener acting as sponsor and Lawrence Welch as President. Early in the fall a get-together picnic was held for the new members. At Thanksgiving, the Hi-Y with the help of the student body got up a number of baskets which were given to the needy. At the beginning of the second semester, new officers were elected, Frank Holman, as president. In January a joint meeting was held with the Girl Reserves. An important advancement in the Hi-Y this year has been an increase of membership, making the membership about 25.
