' .y . V . h BY IDEHLS We feel it is no small distinction to have among us a l.faJor Su- perior of the Oblates of Saint Francis de Sales in the person ot Father Philip Butler. No member of the Faculty is held in higher regard by the student body. lt was a complete surprise to us to learn that he occupied so hiah a rank in the hierarchy of the insti- tute, being a member ot the Gen- eral Council lor several years. While his rank is higher than that ot any other Oblate in the United States, he has not been above serving as head ot the Mathe- matics Department and the School Library. ln addition to these duties he served with distinction in the Armed Forces during World War ll. FIRMLY ESTABLISHED father Butler is one cf three brothers who are members of the Congregation Father foseph But- ler former Pro'.'1r1cQal, is engaged in rxssionary work in Africa, and Father William Butler is an ine structor at the North Catholic High School in Phgladelphia, We .greatly appreciate Father Butlers devotion to us and adm1re his sell- that it eflacernent, for we know seldom happens that a in Father Butlers position is willing burden to assume the very real ol instructing high school students. f X X S .4 We, the Class of l949, respec- fully dedicate this fifth volume ol the Salesian to the Very Rev- erend Philip l. Butler, Councellor General of the Oblates ol Saint Francis de Sales, an Alumnus ol the School and Dean of Mathematics. WE STRESS THE IMPUBTANCE UI-' Religion is the spiritual base for all other freedoms. Without this fundamental, Democ- racy is a shell and all other freedoms are idle dreams. Without religious freedom the idea of good and evil and respect for the rights of others are idle boasts. Regimentation is the opposite of freedom, and where religion is ignored respect for the individual soon topples. It is only by realizing the religious tendencies in man and his striving for the supernatural that a State can fulfill its God- given right to rule. Freedom 01 Religious Expression 'Q Our Most Reverend Bishop was born in Tabert, Ireland, where he received his preliminary studies to the priest- hood. ln 1881 he enrolled as a student at the College of St. Trond, and later completed his studies at the University of Louvain and was ordained to the priesthood in 1904. On leaving his native land, he came to America and was an assistant curate at the Church of the Assumption in Philadelphia, holding that position until 1906 when he was appointed Professor of The- ology at Saint Charles Seminary. This latter position he held for a compara- tively short time when he was called to the high office of Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, resigning this position in 1914. ln l925 he was elevated to episcopal rank and ap- pointed Bishop of Wilmington, the fourth Bishop of the Diocese. The Very Reverend William D. Buckley, O.S.F.S., is the Superior Provincial ot the Oblates of Saint Francis de Sales. Father Buckley is a native Delawarean having at- tended the Ursuline Academy and the Sales- ianum School. ln 1925 he was admitted to his first profession as an Ololate and in the follow- ing year went to Rome for his Philosophical and Theological studies. l-le was ordained to the priesthood in luxe of 1531. The idea of democracy is practiced when each mem- ber becomes eligible for membership after a recommendation from their class Prefect. He is then elected and approved according to standard procedure. The chief aims ot the Council are: to appease both the students and the admin- istration, to encourage more participation Members of the Student Representative Government are: Neal Kelly, Francis Sarto, Father Lemon, Pre- tect, Paul Catinella and Iohn McGonigle. Things didn't always make sense to us back in '45, for we were introduced to a completely new line of studies, extra- curricular activities and discipline. Our teachers weren't exactly new to us for we had seen them helping in the Parishes. But now we were to meet them not only as priests but priest-teachers. The relationship did not change drasticallyi In fact we became close friends forming a community within a community, a community ol ideas with one aim, Catholic- Democratic living. Being the largest class in the history ol the school, one hundred and sixteen, brought its problems, and this tended to bring us closer together. It took us four years to compile a brief history , . . It will take us a lifetime to forget it. l 'R H4 :ul Moda ffuzf J-1, rg-1, fb U M BHMWQQ Z! 00 lf? 0771 Lu! :gf 'fu -ff' ,VY ,.
