This year the annual staff decided to dedicate the 1972 Etalon to Mrs. Agnes Ashimine, because she has done all of these things and a great deal more over the past eight years. As president of the Mother ' s Club for the last four years, Mrs. Ashmine has led that group with a kind of leadership that has never been matched here at Salesian. More than one of the mothers has said that Mrs. Ashimine is the Mothers ' Club. She has also been an active member of the Salesian Advisory Board. We on the ETALON staff, speaking for the entire student body and faculty, wish to thank Mrs. Agnes Ashimine for all the time and effort she has given us. None of us will ever forget her unselfish and untiring spirit. 89 i ' i .i mi i , -L - j . -; ' ■ — -v. 4- jfi e --. 5 Sfr J.? ic « , t-r ■ ■-«  -. They have mowed top ranked teams and smashed all feeble ones with relative ease. They have excelled in spirit and have now become known as a dreaded foe. However, unlike any football team in Salesian ' s history, they have become known as a proto-type for all ambitious teams. These Mustangs have broken long revered records with no regard for past sentiments. There 6-3 win-lost record edged out the previous best of 5-3-1. Jesse Ramirez ' s 96 yard interception is the longest in Salesian ' s books. Other phe- nomenal feats such as; being the first Salesian team ever to be rated in CIF play, winning five consecutive games, scoring the most points in a single game (34), and having 20 members on the all-league team are all new records which will be long standing. 97 All League r ' EDDIE GUTIERREZ Soph. — Safety Head Coach DEAN ROGERS LORENZO ESPARZA Jr. — Linebacker L yiL ■•o . ffi HECTOR RIOS Sr. — Guard Assislanl Coach DENNIS MURRAY ANGEL GOMEZ Soph. — Tackle RAY DE LA CRUZ Sen. — Tackle JESSE RAMIREZ Jr. — End hi Row. THE SEASON The 1971-72 basketball team was very inexperienced. Eight of the Iwolve members were juniors, and three of the four seniors had litlle or no varsity playing experience. We were not able to sustain a winning attitude throughout the year. Players who were elevated to the first string became compla- cent, and thus the lineup continually changed. We did not have any size, and we lacked quickness and consistent shooting. Frank Carreon, a three year letterman, did receive All-League recognition. But this was the only highlight of the season. Next year we hope for a more successful season with dedication from otir eight juniors and several junior varsity players of this year. N. The initial outing saw tlic only defeat to an always tough San Marino squad on their course. The leant captured their 3rd title in a row. thus advancing to the GIF. SS fi- nals. They placed 2nd in the very strong A division. Two other seniors, Dave Carbajal and Frank Valencia contributed greatly lo the Mustangs ' success. These young men will be sorely missed come next year. We ' ll still get strong support from junior Ed Torres, who potentially could become one of the great Salesian run- ners. Rounding out our team were seniors Sergio Varela and Dave San- chez, plus junior Alonzo Davis — all fine men. Two outstanding sopho- mores, Cresencio Rodriguez and Ed Martinez, conducted themselves capably with 12th and 14th place finishes in the GIF SS Division A Championship run. Complementing these are Rudy Gil and Ed Puella. both excellent runners with fine futures. Congratulations to the whole Varsity squad on spreading Salesian ' s pride and spirit. It was fitting, then, that December 8th when the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe is traditionally celebrated at Salesian, should have been the occasion for the visit of Cesar Chavez, director of the U.F.W.O.C. Cha- vez is recognized as one of the truly great leaders in our day; the Salesian High community felt greatly honored by his presence and participation in our celebration of the Eu- charist. He spoke to us of nonviolent struggle, pointing out that nonviolence is power and power is change. He urged us as disciples of Christ to reflect God ' s love of mankind b involving xourselves in the development of man. 146 147 II A h Give mk TaKe Awjliia Rest ® ' ' ' ' ' '  3 km ' M ' .; A SALESIAN DAY On January 28. 1972 the student body relfbrated the feast of St. John Bosco, the founder of the Salesian Society. The main (■()n elel)rant of the Mass was His Excellen- ry Archbishop Timothy Manning, who was making his annual visit to Salesian. The long awaited debut of the Salesian High School Band highlighted the day. We of the Etalon Staff would like to thank the Archbishop for continuing the tradition of visiting Salesian which he start- ed years ago. The object of the whoh ' program was to make the students of Salesian and the community aware of the cultural background of the As- ians. There was a skit on the internment of the Japanese- Americans during World War II, a talk on Identity by a for- mer Salesian student, and a miniature-tree display. The pro- gram continued over the weekend, with karate and flower- making exhibitions, as well as a Japanese tea ceremony. The Asian Culture program came about through the efforts of two people: Mr. Mike Sakamoto, a Salesian faculty member, and Mrs. Agnes Ashimine. President of the Mother ' s Club. Many thanks to those who assisted in the preparation and actual carrying out of the cultural program. 153 Mr. Ben T, Suzuki, along with other members of the Japanese community, helped to make this day possi- ble. m A 300 year old bonsai or miniature tree display. 154 Salesian faculty and students stop to admire one of the exhibits. 15S MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY 1S6 Marlin Liilhrr King Jr. was one of the greatest men lliat I ' MT li t ' (l. It is therefore proper that Black Culture Da at Sali ' sian High is relebrated on Dr. King ' s birth- day. The |]la k stiidenls put on a fine program, and the guest speaker. Mr. WaUer Atwood. a former Salesian fa(uh member gave a moving speech on Black History. It is fortunate then, that the black students, under the direction of Mr. Herman Hodge were able to share a small part of their culture with us that day. ■ . 157 1 Faculty vs. Varsity Basketball Game 158 159 Lettermen vs. Sacred Heart of Jesus 160 Sock Hops Rallies 162 ■ SCHOOL 163 1 o R A I O N 164 165 C3 ■ si.A ' - M i 72 BRO.
