The day burst warm and clear over the L. A. Basin as some 100 boys and girls met at Salesian High at the ungodly hour of 7:00 a.m. Ungodly for two counts: it was a school holiday, February 12, and just nobody in his right mind Is up at that time; and they were gathering to assault Mt. Wilson no guarantee of glory and fame, no merit badges in the offing, no radio and TV coverage What makes anyone want to climb a mountain especially an L.A. youngster who has so much else offered? In spite of all odds, two bus loads of tenderfoot looking boys and girls unloaded onto the Sierra Modre Mount Wilson Trail — 8 miles of gnarled, twisting, hot, dusty trail snaking its precipitous way up the heights above. A small handful shot off like NASA rockets with perfect count- downs and lift-off . . . others more experienced and knowledgable in mountain ways, began slowly, and continued throughout slowly, conserving, saving. And finally some petered out before they even started. The historic trail meandered through low, clinging desert-like shrub and chaparral to medium altitude hard- woods, ending at 6,000 ' with visible signs of pines and high country life envir- onment. Approximately 35 folk made it— even some of the weaker sex! Many more would hove arrived at the top but were advised to forget it at the 6 mile mark. The Wilson Park was closed due to land slides from the recent earthquake. But the sweat and agony of sore m uscles, and short breath was well compensated for by the challenge, the fresh new environment that con- trasted with our usual smog laden air, noise filled world, the concrete and glass wilderness that is our usual habitat. This was the third Feast of Fools sponsored by Salesian High and once again, was most successful. Those who went will never forget it. The Hike 137
