Although he was in pain, he jumped up, ready to ploy again. Even after Steve was taken out of the game, he wanted to return to play with his team. He sat on the bench for half of the fourth quarter, crying. He cried not out of shame, but because he could not help his team anymore that night. Steve has been helping Salesian for four years now. He is a dedicated person who even now, in his hospital bed, wants to be with his team against Cathedral. We know Steve, although not physically, will be there Friday night against Cathedral. F ' John Tkalrc SOB i Dedication Over the years, our school has been growing in pride and spirit, especially in the year 1970-1971. There are three men who have dedicated themselves to our school. They stand somewhat in the background and have at times been neglected. At this time, we the Etalon Staff would like to honor these men by dedicating Etalon ' 71 to Brother Tom Keegan S. D. B., Brother Rudy Bertagnolli S. D. B., and Father John Tkalec S. D. B. SAM.ESIAJV HIGH SCHOOL 960 South Soto S(reei — Phone AN 17124 Los Angeles, CaUlornia 90023 June 6, 1971 Dear Graduates: Congratulations on your graduation. You have reached a milestone in your life, one which unfortunately many young people in our city do not reach. You are now setting out on a journey into adult life. All these years you have been making preparations for this important journey: you have been stocking up supplies of information, enlightened attitudes, maturing experiences, and moral and religious values. Your journey on your own will be slow in starting, perhaps somewhat aimless, until you are sure of your itinerary. May your progress through life not be like that of Shake- speare ' s player who struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more . May it rather be like that of St. Paul who at the end of life can say, I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith . As you leave Salesian, your last stop within the boundaries of your preparatory years, all of us members of the faculty wish you Godspeed. We are sad to see you part and yet happy that we have had our share, be it ever so small, in helping you shape your course homeward to the Father ' s house. With love and blessing, Fr. Roger N. Senior Rock and Roll Shows This year, we, the Senior Class Officers, orgonized Rock ' n Roll Shows at various girls schools. From these shows, we cJid not receive any kind of profit. However, profit was not why we had these shows. The reason we had these shows, was to bring SALESIAN and other schools closer together. We hope we attained our goal. The schools we entertained ot were: Sacred Heart of Jesus, Loretto, Conoty, Ramona Convent, and Sacred Heart of Mary. The welcomes we received from these schools were worm and sincere. We would like to thonk these schools and their student body for letting us have these Rock ' n Roll Shows. Thank You, SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS ng Ihe girls ol 132 Faculty Vs. Basin as some 100 boys and girls met at Salesian High at the ungodly hour of 7:00 a.m. Ungodly for two counts: it was a school holiday, February 12, and just nobody in his right mind Is up at that time; and they were gathering to assault Mt. Wilson no guarantee of glory and fame, no merit badges in the offing, no radio and TV coverage What makes anyone want to climb a mountain especially an L.A. youngster who has so much else offered? In spite of all odds, two bus loads of tenderfoot looking boys and girls unloaded onto the Sierra Modre Mount Wilson Trail — 8 miles of gnarled, twisting, hot, dusty trail snaking its precipitous way up the heights above. A small handful shot off like NASA rockets with perfect count- downs and lift-off . . . others more experienced and knowledgable in mountain ways, began slowly, and continued throughout slowly, conserving, saving. And finally some petered out before they even started. The historic trail meandered through low, clinging desert-like shrub and chaparral to medium altitude hard- woods, ending at 6,000 ' with visible signs of pines and high country life envir- onment. Approximately 35 folk made it— even some of the weaker sex! Many more would hove arrived at the top but were advised to forget it at the 6 mile mark. The Wilson Park was closed due to land slides from the recent earthquake. But the sweat and agony of sore m uscles, and short breath was well compensated for by the challenge, the fresh new environment that con- trasted with our usual smog laden air, noise filled world, the concrete and glass wilderness that is our usual habitat. This was the third Feast of Fools sponsored by Salesian High and once again, was most successful. Those who went will never forget it. The Hike 137 Donkey J Corlos shoots tc Ivo. Because of a rare combination of players, coaches, and desire, the Mustangs overcame the many problems of a team to achieve a winning season of 4 wins, 3 losses and 1 tie. %y far the most cherished victory was gained when our Blue, Black, and White Mustangs journeyed to our home field to meet our arch rival.
