Salem QEEEQ AWadmonof Excakrme Jarncf, I Arnsler, President April, 1988 Dear Graduates and Students: HFarewell, thou child of my right hand and joy. My sin was too much hope of theen. QEpigram 16161 Reflect on your past joys, losses and successes. Realize that the losses were relatively small and insignificant when compared to the growth provoked by them. Calculate them accurately and add them to your personal formula for life and living. Savor the present, the transition from the old to the new, from the known to the unknown, from the comfortable to the anticipated. You can do this with ease and grace if you have accounted for your past with a commitment to accuracy and learning. Relish the future for it can present new opportunities, places, and people. The foundation of the realized and resolved past will be the base on which you can build your desired future. I move on, but not without you, for your indelible touch has been signifi- cant during my time with you. The touch exchanged between student and educator is in itself a bit of the miraculous. The truest educator is intrinsically a student's student. I am taking much new knowledge with me. I trust that this has been a fair and equitable exchange for that has been my commitment. Farewell is not an end, but the preamble to commencement. nFarewell, and thy fain would have you as a beginningn. CGibranJ Sincerely, CCD...:1z.?. lW.......... Winston E. Thompson, Ed.D. TO THE CLASS OF 1988 I AM DELIGHTED TO WRITE THESE BRIEF WORDS OF FAREWELL FOR YOUR YEARBOOK. OUR DEPARTURE FROM SALEM COINCIDES IN THIS YEAR OF 1988 - YOU AS A GRADUATE HAVING SPENT BETWEEN TWO AND FIVE YEARS AT SALEM AND MYSELF HAVING AN ASSOCIATION WITH SALEM THAT BEGAN IN 1949, ALMOST 40 YEARS AGO. I WOULD HOPE THAT YOU MIGHT BE LEAVING WITH A FEELING ABOUT SALEM STATE COLLEGE SIMILAR TO MINE. ALTHOUGH IT IS NOT PERFECT, IT DOES PROVIDE A QUALITY EDUCATION AND DOES PREPARE STUDENTS WELL FOR THE PROFESSIONS OF THEIR CHOICE. ADDITIONALLY, IT IS MY BELIEF IT ACCOMPLISHES THIS GOAL BETTER THAN ANY OTHER FOUR-YEAR COLLEGE. GREAT COLLEGES - PUBLIC AND PRIVATE, HAVE THREE ELEMENTS IN COMMON. A TRADITION OR HISTORY, A RECOGNITION OF WHAT IS NEEDED TO MEET THE EDUCATIONAL NEEDS OF TODAY'S STUDENT AND CONCERN FOR THE COLLEGE'S FUTURE. SALEM STATE COLLEGE MEASURES EXTREMELY WELL AGAINST THESE THREE CRITERIA. IT IS THE SEVENTH OLDEST PUBLIC COLLEGE IN AMERICA, FOUNDED IN A CITY WITH A HISTORY UNRIVALED BY ANY OTHER CITY IN THE UNITED STATES. SALEM HAS ADDED IN THE PAST EIGHT YEARS TWELVE NEW BACHELOR DEGREE PROGRAMS IN SUCH DIVERSE PROFESSIONS AS CARTOGRAPHY, COMPUTER STUDIES, CRIMINAL JUSTICE AND OFFICE ADMINISTRATION IN ORDER THAT STUDENTS GRADUATING FROM SALEM MIGHT BE BETTER PREPARED FOR PROFESSIONAL OPPORTUNITIES. LASTLY, THE GROUND WORK HAS BEEN LAID FOR THE FUTURE SALEM STATE UNIVERSITY WITH THE ORGANIZATION OF THE COLLEGE INTO FIVE SEPARATE SCHOOLS - SCHOOLS OF BUSINESS, EDUCATION, HUMAN SERVICES, LIBERAL ARTS AND NURSING. AS GRADUATES IN THE CLASS OF 1988 YOU SHOULD TAKE PRIDE IN SALEM STATE COLLEGE'S PROFESSIONAL REPUTATION STATE-WIDE AND NATIONALLY. I WOULD ALSO HOPE YOU WOULD-LEAVE SALEM AS NOT ONLY A STRONG ADVOCATE BUT ONE WHO RETAINS AN ASSOCIATION WITH SALEM BY INVOLVING YOURSELF IN ALUMNI ACTIVITIES. KINDLY ACCEPT MY VERY BEST WISHES FOR GOOD HEALTH AND CONTINUED PROFESSIONAL SUCCESS. -T J s T. Amsler, President
